Shoutout for a question about honey and its interaction with bread. January 30, 2007 10:44 PM   Subscribe

PositiveFeedbackCalloutFilter:This question is why I love Metafilter. To me, it has all the makings of a classic AskMe. An honest query about an obscure topic, multiple knowledgeable responses, an offer to experiment, and an idea for lunch tomorrow!

I was going to post this in the thread, with the expectation that it would be deleted as noise, but thought this approach might be more constructive.

Its my first callout, so I'll try and load up on the snark next time.

ATTENTION SCOUTS. WORKER BEE #18901 HAS FALLEN OFF THE HIVE. THE QUEEN WANTS HIM DIPPED IN ROYAL JELLY AND BROUGHT TO HER FOR LUNCH.

Loquacious, I must point out to you that all worker bees are female. The only males in a bee colony/hive are drones. All they are good for eating honey and sex. They get kicked out in the winter to DIE.

I really liked that askme question. It simultaneously appeals to my beekeeper heritage (father's side), love of honey on bread, and scientific curiosity.

I must point out that they also don't have any concept of insanity or punishment, and I was misappropriating the bit from E.B. White's Once And Future King where Arthur in ant form "falls off the nest".

All they are good for [is] eating honey and sex.

How bad, exactly, do I have do be to get busted down to drone bee next spin 'round the Wheel Of Life?

Not so keen on the winter bit, but it sounds like a reasonable deal...

Oh, I don't know, have you ever actually tried eating sex?

Yeah, and it tastes like a nine-volt battery.

When the question began as the quintessential unessential blog entry—"I ate a sandwich, today"—I thought this was a scathingly wry callout, but you're right. I'd always wondered about the bread-texture thing, for one.

I love any thread where a comment can begin, "In the interests of science and breakfast..."

(Oh, in case you missed it, here's a recent thread in the blue that also combines science and breakfast. I actually tried the "70°C for 1 hour" thing over the weekend, and it turned out pretty well!)

Crap. Who is E.B. White? Charlotte's Web?

Hey, that's my post! Woot.

Thanks for this callout; I had noticed and wondered about the "crunchy honey" phenomenon myself for years. I, too thought about posting in the thread but wanted to keep the S/N ratio high.

I don't know about that question, but cilantro is the only person who lists me as a crush, which is odd, because I don't know that we've ever interacted. But please, by all means bring on the arts-and-letters Southern gals, please.

Devotees of SCIENCE! though, are all at this weblog.

Thanks, OmieWise, for the inspiration, however lame its results.

Oh, wow, I got meta'd and it wasn't even bad. Thank you!
Eideteker, I can't remember why I crushed you, it's probably because you said something in a thread that was cute, funny, smart, or some combination of those. :D

Ah, that's fair. When pressed, most of my friends can't remember why they like me, either.
