Thank you for deleting this. February 15, 2007 9:25 PM   Subscribe

With all the MeTa'ing about why-did-you-delete-my-post, I feel sure this one will get challenged, too. But I just wanted to say excellent moderation there, w00t. Depressing-as-fuck does not equal best-of-the-web.

I have no idea what you are talking about, Methylviolet. What post was deleted?
posted by cgc373 at 9:29 PM on February 15, 2007

Er, my html in the title didn't work.
I'm talking about the post about Parents Behaving Badly (that is now gone.)

What the holy pogoing floppy-penised jesus is going on here?

Without any links, this thread is like IRC - brb

Nothing nearly so exciting as what is going on there, apparently.
posted by Methylviolet at 9:38 PM on February 15, 2007

Okay. It's a deleted thread. Sufficiently put off by the comments, I didn't click the link. Looked like nothing I'd want to see or know about.

Why bring up the deletion here, Methylviolet? With the post disappeared, only those few people would ever know; now, it's a convocation waiting to happen.

Heh. Just the opposite. Last couple of hours at work before the long, Chinese-New-Year's weekend.

Hey, this is like IRC.

Seriously, I had no idea languagehat knew that many words for fecophilia. I guess the y2karl praise thread pushed him over the edge.

Also, I finished reading Chuck Palahniuk's Haunted last night and I too have had quite enough creepy to keep me going for a while.

I sent a booty call text to my recent ex this week, she replied, I hammered my message home. After I sent the second one I found out I was actually texting a work colleague. Creepy.

Well, maybe if you'd found out that the colleague had committed suicide by pushing his arm down a garburetor that very morning. And if you'd gotten an erection anyway, and later told the story to your ex, who then suggested some thanato-erotic fantasy threeway kitchen sex involving the deceased colleague's widow.

That'd be creepy.

Yes, stavros; yes, it would.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one, then.

I'm quite happy that thread is gone, but in that case, I'd say this one is even more worthy of deletion.

There was at least some scope for discussion about the rights and wrongs of such a site, whereas the other FPP is just a fucked-up news story.

stavros - I take it you are not a Korean native. (garburetor)
We miss you at home.
Love, mum.

You're welcome. And iajs, you're right, I took that one down too. "People are really fucked up aren't they?" stories are often not great MeFi posts.

The top post on the Parents site was pretty amazing, in a tagged-with-both-"sex acts"-and-"sex pacts" kind of way.
posted by grobstein at 10:34 PM on February 15, 2007

Weird. I had already read most of those news stories, and if anything I would have said that the post should have been deleted for being newsfilter.

I took that one down too

Now kill this one and you'll have the hat trick.

No! Don't kill the hat!

...what?

holy pogoing floppy-penised jesus

I would like to see the deleted post replaced with something in reference to the above. kthxbai.

Creepy for sure, but I would argue it's a noteworthy curiosity nonetheless. Is the ick factor the only reason for this post not to stand?

I'd like to hear from tellurian as well.

I posted it because I found the site outrageous and horrible. I regretted posting it and asked for it to be deleted. It was the worst of the web, perhaps charitably described as a noteworthy curiousity. Sometimes I suffer lapses of judgment.

Fortunately, jessamyn kindly obliged and promptly removed it (thanks again, jessamyn, and thanks for being so quick about it).

Oof. Damning him with faint eponysteria.

Alright. I don't mind being (evidently) the only person to hold this opinion: That was one of the ten best links I've gotten from Metafilter in, say, the last three months. Possibly the last six.

I'm glad to see that someone is putting this kind of stuff on the web. I feel pretty certain we won't see any more serious advances in child protection until the general public becomes aware of the extent of the problem and has a clear idea of just how effective (or ineffective) the current procedures are at dealing with it. While the text includes some editorializing (with which I sometimes found myself disagreeing), there's an emphasis on presenting the basic facts. I think that does a great service to the cause.

Sure, a web site of this nature can get out of hand, instigating vigilantism and so forth. And if that happens, I'd favor doing something to put the brakes on. But you could solve that problem by altering the names of the offenders. The content could remain essentially unchanged.
