Pastabagel for prom king! August 14, 2007 9:03 AM   Subscribe

I know MetaFilter isn't a popularity contest, but just in case, I thought it'd be interesting to gather some stats on what percentage of certain users' posts/comments are favorited. Here is a completely unscientific sample.
posted by desjardins to MetaFilter-Related at 9:03 AM (346 comments total) 4 users marked this as a favorite

My "methodology" - people who have used the site recently (i.e., not dropped off the face of the earth) with a relatively high post count (2000+) who seem to be well-known. I'm sure, being a relative n00b, that I've missed some big names.
posted by desjardins at 9:05 AM on August 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

Is that percentage of comments favorited, or just a ratio of total favorites to total comments?
posted by cortex (staff) at 9:06 AM on August 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

Oh, and each sheet is sorted on a different column. Sheet 1 - ratio, Sheet 2 - total posts/comments, Sheet 3 - favorites.

I don't know of a way to dynamically update this, so all numbers are as of this morning.
posted by desjardins at 9:07 AM on August 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

Can you label those spreadsheets?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 9:07 AM on August 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

It looks like total contributions marked as a favorite by others, divided by a sum of total contributions (posts + comments across all sites).

woz or asavage would be like 10,000% I bet, since they make a few posts that everyone loves to death.

If you did this for everyone, it would skew dramatically towards newer users - who joined after favoriting was added as a feature. Very few of us go back in the archives to favorite older comments or posts from users who have been here forever.

Point of my earlier question being that this doesn't really discriminate between 'hittiness' and 'consistency'—someone with a ton of favorites on every 50th comment vs. someone with one or two favorites on every second comment, for example. From a number-crunching perspective, it'd be interesting to see also the percentage of comments that receive any favorites at all, though figuring that out would be more complicated (or at least require more scraping), since you'd have to check each individual comment, though.

Problem: Skewing toward those intelligent, insightful noobs because the favorites system hasn't always been in place.
Possible Solution: Ignoring posts from before the favorites system was added.
Complication: Dismisses great posters from ye olde metafiltere.

Problem: Skewing toward those hot, sexy noobs because there are more people around nowadays adding favorites.
Possible Solution: Weight each favorite by the number of active users at the time it was favorited.
Complication: What is an active user?

Problem: Doesn't distinguish between hittiness and consistency.
Possible Solution: Ask a statistician. Probably something having to do with medians or standard deviations.
Complication: This solution makes me look dumb and regret sleeping through statistics classes in college.

Problem: The tehloki effect.
Mandated solution: for calculation purposes, assume all tehloki's favorites were assigned to me.
Complication: N/A. Foolproof.

This sort of stuff really annoys me. If you even bother to think about problems like the one Riki Tiki posted (and there are many more) then you realize how little it means. Any stats/math geek worth their salt would be ashamed to present data like this.

You might as well produce a random list of users and then proclaim that these are the "best" according to a secret algorithm you are not ready to reveal. It would have the same effect.

posted by googly at 10:09 AM on August 14, 2007 [4 favorites]

To win, you need to only post FPPs. Probably easiest to do Ask questions, since useful ones tend to get favorited by someone.

Trying to be clever in comments isn't a winning strategy.
posted by smackfu at 10:10 AM on August 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

In these two comments, Pastabagel has over 500 favorites. Following on after that (see for yourself!) are a series of comments with two-digit favorite counts. All told, that's 1082 favorite from just the twenty most favorited things in their history. I'd describe that as decidedly "hitty".

It's likely that those two 200+ comments were both sidebarred, which explodes the visibility of a post or comment.

Given that and the relative newness of the account (so that Pastabagel's prolific commenting pace nonetheless hasn't had time to push them over into the sort of total-comment-count territory of a cortex or a jonmc or an amberglow), the high ratio isn't all that mysterious.

And this is where the question of hittiness vs. consistency gets interesting: how does the list change when a comment that gets one fave counts for as much as one that gets fifty or two hundred? Would Pastabagel's profile, for example, still top the list, or fall in among the normies as it were?
posted by cortex (staff) at 10:11 AM on August 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

Not too heavily, in this case; note that desjardins didn't exclude* favorites on music posts (they're just using raw fave totals), but rather excluded the count of comments and posts in Music—which, for most users, is a small if not negligable portion of their total posting volume.

That's the point, cortex: you have around, I don't know... at least 400 favorites for songs you've posted, and a 2656 favorite total on the spreadsheet. Excluding those 400+ favorites drops your ratio from 25% to 21.5%, which is a significant source of error.

Not that anyone really cares in this case, but I thought I'd point it out.

I want an anti-favorites option.

I think it should at least give people the choice of being anonymous, and should also give anyone on the receiving end the choice of whether or not to allow everyone else to see their total negatives.

I have a feeling I annoy some other members quite a bit; one person recently expressed a desire to anti-favorite one of my answers, as I recall, and I would really like to know just how much I'm rubbing people the wrong way (not that this has ever stopped me in the past, or would here and now, necessarily).

I'm not sure, but I think the global effects of such a system would be positive. In the case of AskMe, I think it could be very helpful to the Asker in evaluating the answers, and in the case of MetaFilter, it might reduce the cussing which dilutes the discussing so badly in some of the more interesting threads .

On the serious, however, I go back and forth about whether MeFi is better off with favorites or if favorites have changed the dynamic so much that favoriteseeking is a primary motivator for a lot of people.

On the one hand, it's nice to get favorites. It's nice when people LOL and let you know or think that you've made an interesting and thought-provoking point or a resource-laden post to return to. Perhaps, even, it's nice in a way when you've pissed someone off so much that they stalk you by favoriting your screeds, adding your name to a Buscemian "People to Kill" list. Favorites undeniably encourage wit and good posts.

On the other, it used to be nice to favorite something the old-fashioned way, by linking to their comment and saying, effectively "GREAT!" "LOL" "Good point!" or the rarer fantasto-flag. We've lost a little bit of that, but by the same token, there are less non-comment "stavros FTW" throwaways. Plus, there is often an unacceptable level of favoritehunting hobaggery. Does it outweigh the benefits? Unklar.

I am by no means an old-timer, but I lurked and commented through the pre-favorites era and there is a v. strange disconnect between post-favoriting n00bs [NOT, BTW, N00BIST] and those who were here back in the day, when MetaFilter was made of wood and powered by steam.

Favorites are inextricably bound now into the fabric of the site and for better or worse, have taken over for a lot of people. I like them, but I get a wee bit uncomfortable sometimes to hear people treat them as though they are the be all and the end all of MeFi, or some kind of quality yardstick, merit badge or anything other than what they are: a nice little validating/bookmarking device that's a relatively new feature of an old site with a long history and pre-favoriting culture.

Since my top five most favorited comments all begin the same way, I think it's perfectly and infallibly clear that the best way to accrue favorites is to begin a comment with the phrase "you know."

Judging by my sixth most favorited comment the second best way to accrue favorites is to make a reference to A Confederacy of Dunces.

Judging by my sixth most favorited comment the second best way to accrue favorites is to make a reference to A Confederacy of Dunces.

Any version of the "I work with poor people" post is good for at least six or seven. I figured that out early and have been hammering the shit out of it ever since. I figure I'll flog that horse until the awards get handed out and then let everyone know that I'm really a corporate attorney from Westport.

posted by Floydd at 1:43 PM on August 14, 2007 [4 favorites]

I know MetaFilter isn't a popularity contest, but just in case,

in case... it actually secretly is a popularity contest?

it's whatever you make it. so it's more of a popularity contest now. I was not sure favorites were a good idea when they started, but I was definitely pleased the first time someone favorited something of mine. Still, over time, like nanojath above, I was sometimes disappointed by which comments of mine received attention, and which ones seemed to pass by unnoticed. Now I try to pay attention to who likes something I say, and go check out their comments, rather than just checking in on numbers.

And if you're still bothered by a small ratio, when no one sees how brilliant your insight is, just think like Nietzsche and claim you're writing for the future, you're ahead of your time... though of course Nietzsche was always fighting with his publisher about why he wasn't selling more in the present, too. Everyone wants to be loved, even Nietzsche.

Very few of us go back in the archives to favorite older comments or posts from users who have been here forever.

There's gold in them thar archives. The example that comes quickest to mined.

In fact, I recommend everyone should take an evening and review everything I've posted to the MetaFilter Universe. Your favorite is bound to be in there somewhere. I mean, they're few and somewhat far between, but you don't get stuff like tv-links or sex-swing tattoo tributes to K-Fed on a daily basis. Oh, wait... And who doesn't want to know what to do if you're poop's blue? (The bathroom connundrums don't end there, either! [Nor the dick jokes]) Or who painted that one version of Judith killing Holofernes? Bookcrossing is huge! Just Coffee should be huge! Even the MetaTalks are kinda fun sometimes....And to think, friends, there's not very much more!

If you like him, he's the happy person who's generous with his favorites and who sees the value in people's comments when others miss it and pass them by.

If you don't like him, he's the bastard who doesn't call the next day (as he admits above) and is off favoriting other people while you delude yourself into thinking what you two have is special.

The first Corinthian or the second? And who is Dr. Who? Are you referring to The Doctor?

So, uh...from a point of quantifying contribution, could you try stealing an idea from academia (where favorites are called "citations") and use an h-index for favorites?

You'd have an h-index of n if you have n comments with n favorites each. For example, Pastabagel has a h-index of 18, cortex has an h-index of 17, and desjardins has an h-index of 8.

It's pretty easy to calculate, go to Favorites-->Popular under "View all activity", and count down the comments one by one until your count is the less than or equal to the number of favorites--then you have at least that many comments favorited that many times or more.

Just a thought.

When you post your comment is significant. If it is at the end of the thread you are much less likely to accumulate favorites. Therefore people who constantly surf metafilter are more likely to get favorited than those who read in batches at the end of the day.

It's true that you need to get in early, BrotherCaine - as people tend to wear out their urge to favourite within the first 20 or so comments (and probably tend to only skim the remainder of the thread, anyway) - but it's not as simple as just "constantly surfing".

From a downunder perspective, our mornings are busy mefi times (aligning with US afternoons & evenings), but our afternoons are pretty damn quiet. I could surf all I like in the afternoon & there are precious few posts to get in on early. In order to get in early on a to-be popular thread, I find I need to check the site at around 7am, when I have my first coffee of the day. That seems to be about the peak US time for posting & browsing.

Aside from that, you fail to distinguish between favourites for posts, questions, comments & the MeTa subcategory of comments. People like jonson & nickyskye I think tend to have their blue posts favourited a lot. Others ask a lot of popular questions in the green (ask something simple that everybody could find useful, and you've instantly got up to 100 faves). I think most of my faves are for comments in the blue. Some people just hang out in the grey & jump in on shitfights - I rarely have much success there. Finally, you get the freaks like robocop_is_bleeding & loquacious, who are just so well-written and/or funny that they can attract 50+ for a single quality comment. Different again, TPS & grumblebee seem to have a high hit-rate from giving great advice on the green. So, well, it's all quite different, depending on where peoples focuses, interests & talents lie.

Somebody should have told me that MetaFilter isn't a popularity contest. That way I could just let it all hang out instead of trying to put on "The Angry Intellectual Named Avenger Show" every day.

Agree entirely, BrotherCaine. eg in any thread that's going to be a bit topical & contentious, i think ppl will automatically favourite the first comment (or three) that more or less reflects their own position. You could write something twice as good later on, on the same side, but receive nothing, because people have already cast their vote, so to speak.

I don’t know what to say, really. Three threads to the biggest battle of our professional lives. All comes down to today, and either, we heal as a site, or we're gonna crumble. Favorite by favorite, comment by comment. Until we're finished. We're in hell right now, gentlemen. Believe me. And, we can stay here, get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight our way back into the light. We can climb outta hell... one favorite at a time. Now I can't do it for ya, I'm too old. I look around, I see these young faces and I think, I mean, I've made every wrong choice a middle-aged man can make. I, uh, I've pissed away all my money, believe it or not. I chased off anyone who's ever linked me. And lately, I can't even stand the face I see in the mirror. You know, when you get old, in MetaFilter, ponies get taken from you. I mean, that's... that's... that's a part of MetaFilter. But, you only learn that when you start losin' stuff. You find out MetaFilter's this game of favorites, so is football. Because in either game - MetaFilter or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one bucket of cocks too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One fish in your pants too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. The favorites we need are everywhere around us. They're in every thread of the site, every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that favorite. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone else around us to pieces for that favorite. We claw with our fingernails for that favorite. Because we know when add up all those favorites, that's gonna make the fucking difference between being prom king and being a n00b! Between living and dying! I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to reference pop culture whose gonna win that favorite. And I know, if I'm gonna have any life anymore it's because I'm still willing to fight and die for that favorite, because that's what living is, the six favorites in front of your face. Now I can't make you do it. You've got to look at the guy next to you, look into his eyes. Now I think ya going to see a guy who will go that favorite with you. Your gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this site, because he knows when it comes down to it your gonna do the same for him. That's a site, gentlemen, and either, we heal, now, as a site, or we will die as individuals. That's MetaFilter guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

1. The vast majority of my favorites are for cheap politics jokes.

2. The comment topping the list is about pirates. (Whoever sidebarred that has my eternal gratitude. Yarr)

I don't really think I could ask for more than that. If I got to choose two topics to stand out in, I couldn't think of anything better than politics and pirates. Quality, not quantity.

However, the second-highest is the greatest thing I've ever written in my life... except for the time I broke down 2pac's "Hit 'Em Up" as a PowerPoint presentation

If the chart were to be redone as soon as I hit 2K comments/posts, but no other changes, I'd be #5 with a bullet. Sweet. I had to come check, because the favorites gods have been grinning their faces off on me lately; I've been getting like twenty a day. I can't say I'm not a little prideful. However, I think it's mostly that growing name recognition/cult of personality around here makes favoriting sort of snowball. Also it gets you stupid MeTa posts.
*head swells, asplodes* Keep it real, AV.
