Mefi movie night in NoVa. Anybody interested?

Not to be outdone by our SF brethren, I'm urgining all of you in the DC area to come to the last screening of the Washington Psychotronic Film Society at Dr. Dremo's, slated to close at the end of the month. Plan 9 from Outer Space will be showing on Tuesday, January 22. We had fun last time, and I know doctorschlock will be there--will you?

Same deal as before: I'll plan on getting there around 6:30, unless someone wants to get there sooner. Generally, seating upstairs is more comfortable, as there are easy chairs and couches and such. Plus, bar access is easier.

The screen is downstairs, and they start showing shorts and previews around 8. If you come after 7:30 or so and don't find us upstairs, that's where we'll be.

Dremo's has a great selection of beers, and usually has something decent on special. The food is standard bar fare--wings, burgers, fries, and a few other sandwiches.

I'm 6'5" and have a ponytail, so I'm pretty easy to pick out in a crowd. I'll try to have some sort of MetaFilter sign with me.

Dremo's is 21-and-up, and they do card. Also, it can get a bit smoky in there, so sensitive types might want to give this one a pass.

If he has a black leather jacket, maybe he could be on TNT's "guy movie" marathin, too.

I'll come!

And I'm totally bringing my knitting.

(Just keep me away from the spicy chicken... My doctor said to take it easy now that I'm back on solid foods..)

I'm in. Any recommendation for driving vs. metro?
posted by anaelith at 1:47 PM on January 8, 2008

Looks like the metro is a bock away. And it is...ya know...Virginia.

I don't take my car there.
posted by cowbellemoo at 1:50 PM on January 8, 2008

Metro is very convenient--it's a bit more than a block, but Dremo's is an easy east-ward walk from the Courthouse station. I've never driven there, but I understand parking isn't too difficult, especially since it'll be a Tuesday.

Oooh... would love to do that.

I should be around and will definitely try to make it down for this. Any Baltimore kids want to carpool?
posted by youcancallmeal at 2:30 PM on January 8, 2008

This is the part where I say "I might be able to roadtrip up there to make it!"

Would love to see you peeps again. Will try to move heaven and earth and all that.

Parking in that area can get difficult at times, but yeah, at that hour it should be doable. Just make sure you don't park in a zipcar/flexcar spot, or a bus or taxi zone; they ticket and/or tow your ass real quick when you do that... But yeah, metro's probably easier (just keep in mind it stops at midnight on weekdays).

(Oh, and second the fact that Dremo's has a great beer selection, and a bad smoke problem.)

I might be interested in carpooling, assuming I can make it with my weird work schedule.

Sorry I didn't make it to your New Years Day party, MrMoonPie — I got mega drunk off of sabered bottles of champagne and didn't wake up for quite some time…

I LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU

It's too bad I'm not on the east coast to go to this meetup!

I'm planning on it! I hear zennie's bringing cake!
posted by grateful at 3:48 PM on January 9, 2008

There is a public parking lot up the street from Dremos that usually has space; IIRC it's metered but you can put in enough for several hours. I've never had any luck parking in the actual lot belonging to them.

But I'd definitely metro.

dersins, every time you make the Segal::MrMoonPie reference, I must point out that I have no doubt MrMoonPie does not run like a girl, as does Mr. Segal.

In fact, I suspect that MrMoonPie doesn't run, he simply appears.

posted by itchylick at 4:51 PM on January 12, 2008

Oh, and I found out today that there is free parking (evenings/weekends only) adjacent to the metered lot, under the Arlington County building near 14th and N. Uhle Streets. (Actual entrance to the garage is off of Uhle in the corner between the two buildings; there may be another entrance on 15th.) It's only about 1500 ft from Dremos.

Anyway, I'll try to be there as well.

Crap, I have to bow out. I had emergency gall bladder surgery yesterday and am stuck in NYC until late next week. Have a good time, kids!

Is anyone else heading down from Baltimore? I could use a ride. (Otherwise, I'll try MARC train + staying with friend, so no big deal.)
posted by Airhen at 12:39 PM on January 18, 2008

To all coming to the show....I'll be there early with some surprise stuff on the screen and will go all night until you all can't take anymore.
posted by doctorschlock at 10:25 AM on January 19, 2008

You know, maybe we should just start out downstairs--probably makes everything easier. I'll try to sit near the back of the movie-watching area, hopefully snagging a couch or chair.
posted by MrMoonPie at 5:01 PM on January 19, 2008

I'll probably be closer to 8, but I'm still planning on being there. And outside circumstances happily made the choice of car v. metro for me, so car it is.
posted by anaelith at 7:18 PM on January 20, 2008

I'm going to try really, really hard to make it to this, but i won't get there until like 8:30ish, depending on traffic from Tyson's Corner.

Make lots of noise so I can find you easily :)

NortonDC and I are both hoping to come (everyone say happy birthday to NortonDC!) -- see you there!

I'll probably be there. I have a job interview before. Wish me luck!

The way it's looking now, I'm going to head over directly from work in a couple of hours. Hope to see you guys there.
posted by Kadin2048 at 1:42 PM on January 22, 2008

I'm heading out now! Should get there shortly after 6. I'll meander through the main bar carrying my MetaGrams, so give me the high sign if you see me. I'll then head downstairs, to the back-ish part of the movie area, near the (downstairs) pool tables and bathrooms which figured so prominently in the last meetup's events. If you've not been to Dremo's, the stairs to the movie area are in the back left as you enter the main bar area--just keep walking past the bar, the (upstairs) pool tables and bathrooms, and you'll see the way.

I made it home first apparently.

There were a lot of mefites at this one, I think I only met maybe 1/4th of the people there.

I made it home (against all probability). It was great to meet all of you.

Well, that was a good time. (Aside from the part where I may or may not have given some random fellow with a ponytail the wrong idea. Awkward.)

Glad everyone seems to have made it home okay. Can't wait to see the photos, especially since I was lame and didn't bring anything to actually take photos with.

Glad everyone could make it out. I'd say we gave Dremo's, and especially the Washington Psychotronic Film Society, a blow-out going-away party. I think I met everyone.

And now I'm at work. What a let down.

Was good to meet everyone, although I think I missed some people. I see tittergrrl has posted some happy cake photos to flickr.

I think I was the only person in the place that had never seen Plan 9 From Outer Space (although I did manage to make the brilliant comment "Hey, it's just like that scene from Ed Wood"). Thanks MrMoonPie, twas fun.

This was a triumph! I'm making a note here: huge success.

Nice to meet folks and see people again.

Just got the THREE EPIC PHOTOS on my flickr account in a set, and linked them to this thread.

Next time I might bring a real camera and take more pics. Lots of fun, and was so glad to see my favorite line in the movie with so many other people!

I only took those three with my camera phone. I didn't see anyone else with a camera.

I guess we could fake some pictures using clip art and stock photography.

Thanks Everybody! It was the perfect end to a great series. I wanted some cake but my sugars were too high. Damn sinus infection. If Dremo's wants to move on in the future..they've
got to invest in some more waitrons and bartenders. All in all it was great seeing you all and now that your covers are blown, where do you all plan to troll.
posted by doctorschlock at 8:03 AM on January 25, 2008

And thank you, doctorschlock, for providing so many years of excellent entertainment. I started coming to your shows 8 or so years ago, when I worked on the same block as Lucky Bar. Think the service at Dremo's was bad? Sheesh, Lucky Bar was the pits. My friends and I started the evening at Madhatter; back then, they had free wings and $1 beers on Tuesdays. Most weeks, we'd then head over to Lucky Bar for movies (sometimes, it was Chaos for drag bingo, or, well, we'd just stay at Madhatter and get drunk on $1 beer). It was great to know that there was always something to do on a Tuesday. Here's hoping the WPFS hiatus is a short one.
