Movie Review System on FanFare?
In the post on Rotten Tomatoes, someone mentioned Metacritic, which immediately made my inner reader voice add “(no relation)”. And it made me wonder - at this point, especially thanks to DirtyOldTown’s continuing fantastic posting of older movies, whether we could add a “liked it / it was ok / didn’t like it” button that people could click that would show as a metric under the post, like a favorites count. FanFare AutoBoost thought for your consideration
How about adding a 'trigger' that moves a movie to the top of the page when it goes to streaming. And other "life events" in the career of any particular media. Perhaps when a book is turned into another form (see Like Water for Chocolate ballet) which is also a film, (hmm needs an opera:)
The easiest initial implementation would be a place to insert a release date for theater->streaming, not sure how to auto-populate but we can research that. Mostly for blockbusters but that does seem to be a preponderance of films on the lavender.
Pony Request for FanFare
One FanFare feature I've asked for in the past is the ability to bump older posts back to the top of the timeline. We could do this based on films coming to streaming, being re-released, getting a sequel, etc. While I am requesting that again, today's pony is a new pony, as I have figured out a possible logical way to do that... Metatalktail Hour: Memorable Moments
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! This week, I want to know the most memorable moment from a book, TV show, movie, song, or any media thing you've experienced! What was it? Why did it hit you so hard? Why do you keep remembering it? Was it awful? Was it amazing? TELL ME!
Metatalktail Hour: Comfort Movies
Happy early weekend, MetaFilter! This week, valkane wants to know: "What movie (or top 5) do you watch over and over? Everyone has favorite movies; but which ones are your comfort food? What 5 movies have you re-watched the most?" [more inside]

🧛🦇 MetaSpookyFilms 👻🎃
End of another week, let's talk about scary films. We're just a few 'spooky' weeks away from All Hallows' Eve. What are your favorite scary films? Do you have certain movies that you watch every year as a tradition? Have you discovered something new recently? Are you more into classic movie monsters like The Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein? Or maybe you're into more modern franchises such as Paranormal, The Purge, Conjuring? Are you on Team Freddy or Team Jason? I'd also love to hear some horror reccomendations from other (non-western) countries around the world, films from Asia and Africa that aren't frequently a part of this conversation. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Boo!
Metatalktail Hour: Roll Camera!
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, rhizome wants to know all about the "Movies where you live(d). -- Houses, apartment buildings, etc. stretching to landmarks (corner store, bus stop) where the person [that is, you] spent appreciable amounts of time. Movies, TV...maybe even books!" [more inside]
MetaLikeTheBackofMyHand
End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I want to hear about some "thing" that you've experienced over and over and over again. Maybe it's a book you keep re-reading, or a movie you've seen 100+ times, or a video game you play constantly, or an album or song you have on repeat. What piece of media are you constantly re-enaging with? Some thing that feels like the back of your hand, that you are familiar and comfortable with, that you know all the way through. Some thing you keep on coming back to because you just love it so much. As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.
Metatalktails: Movies!
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter, and welcome to Eurotalktails! This week, EllieBOA wants to know what movies you've seen and enjoyed lately, which struck me as a particularly good topic since we're deep into movie award-show season. [more inside]
I kinda called it
My prediction on Metafilter in 2015: "[A]s we pull back more and more and more we see a multiverse of Peter Parkers getting their powers, each played by a different actor, until one universe becomes clearer and we see..." The reality today. "As Peter trains Miles to become a better Spider-Man, they are soon joined by four other Spider-Men from across the 'Spider-Verse,' including Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, and Spider-Ham."
Metatalktail Hour: Media Recs
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, I want to know what you've been reading, watching, listening to, or otherwise enjoying and want to recommend to everyone else who's looking for something new to enjoy! [more inside]
Metatalktail Hour: Now a Major Motion Picture!
Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, blnkfrnk would like to know "what book people would choose to adapt to a movie. If it has already been adapted, what would you do differently? Casting choices, rewrites, choice of book, type and style of movie, all are open to debate." [more inside]
Looking back on ten years of FPPs
I've joined many web communities in my life, but none for as long or as wholeheartedly as MetaFilter. I've learned a lot, grown as a person, and taken direction from the thousands of smart, funny, and caring people who write here. And I've been inspired to write, too, putting more time and effort into researching worthwhile posts than I have at any other creative hobby. Sadly, what with work and the news chaos and competing interests it feels like there's less and less time to focus lately, and seeing linkrot erode what I do post is a drag. So when showbiz_liz's lovely celebration of ten years on the blue made me realize my own 10th Mefiversary was approaching, I was moved to do something about it. Nothing on the web lasts forever, but armed with old notes files, the Wayback Machine, and a drive to rediscover my own personal Best of the Web, I plowed through all 149 posts (and a few comments) to recover lost links, check on what had happened since, and organize it all into a single FPP omnibus for your reading pleasure. Strange Club
After some discussion, it looks like there's enough interest, so I'm starting up Strange Club on FanFare. It's all about the strange, sublime, arty, and unclassifiable. Join up, and vote for the first viewing here. We're also welcoming film suggestions and ideas for the club over in the discussion thread.
The ins and outs of posting movies to FanFare
As sort of a companion MeTa to this one about posting TV shows to FanFare I'm posting this to get some clarification and input about posting movies.
I started thinking about this earlier because I'd like to put up Enemy of the State but once I started digging around I realized there were many variations to the movie posts, including whether or not the movie had been proposed in FanFare Talk.
Another thing I noticed today in the post about Three Kings was the tag "Spiritof99" which is how I discovered there was a club about movies from 1999. And just now someone proposed starting a MST3K club, which has already been established, so I'm also wondering if we need a way to display the clubs so people can find them. [more inside]

New FanFare Feature: testing the waters with Movies
The FanFare site is evolving and we mentioned in the first post about it that we'll someday be moving into other areas of pop culture on the site. The TV experiments have gone pretty well so we're going to start playing with movies as a major post type matter on the site. [more inside]
Chekhov's Dirtbike
Cortex and Griphus' Hellraiser recap podcast WE HAVE SUCH FILMS TO TO SHOW YOU (previously) comes to the end of all Hellraiser movies so they watch and talk about the 2012 meta-fictional horror trope breakdown, The Cabin In The Woods. And structure, and false codas and what kind of human sacrifice it is. And it's neat.

We Could've Hit the Bigtimes
A fairly popular thread on the Blue of a month or so ago has been picked up by Warner Brothers. No credit to us -- that goes, rightfully, to the original Reddit thread, but fun to see all the same.
Spoilers: Do Not Want.
Just a reminder I'm sure we've had before, but I guess we need a refresher. Whether you like the show or not, have some consideration for others & don't give out spoilers like candy. I gave up on this thread after reading two comments containing the same spoiler.
Searching for the Young Folk Rebels
Searching for an old post. It was a SLYT clip, if memory serves. I bellieve it was the introduction to a movie that featured three people (I think E. European gypsies) playing folk music in a field... [more inside]

Weekend on the spreadsheet
There's a pretty active AskMe thread of movie recommendations going on right now, I threw all the recommended titles into a spreadsheet people can download along with plot, director, etc. Right now it's about 200 titles, I'll update it in a few days with whatever else gets added. Hope someone finds it useful.
Help make me cry with a recent mefi thread!
Looking for a relatively recent ask mefi thread concerning scenes in movies and short, internet available videos that would cause one to cry, although not necessarily sad. More along the lines of "uplifting and touching." All I remember is that both Big Fish and UP were mentioned, and it was around 3 weeks ago. Help!
I'd like help finding an interest thread about music in movies.
I'm looking for the thread in which a person was interested in putting the music in movies, and wanted to know what that occupation was called/how to get there.
Thanks!
YOU ARE TEARING ME APART LISA!!
Previously covered on the blue, The Room will be showing at Chandler Cinemas, May 15th at 11pm. If you haven't had a chance to see this fantastic trainwreck of a film, now would be a great opportunity. I'd like to host a meetup/pre-film party at my house starting around 6 ir 7 if any AZ Mefites would be interested. [more inside]
How about a *real* policy on spoilers?
Could we have a real documented policy on spoilers, ideally enforced by the people who approve the posts in question?
Is it *really* necessary to approve posts (Warning: multiple "House" spoilers!) that are basically spoilers as read, or that have unwarned *spoiler* links? Perhaps all spoilers should be in the "more inside" section, with a prominent warning in the description field?!
If multiple people are complaining that a post basically spoiled the episode, then what's the point of expecting the *spoilers!* or *NSFW* courtesies from posters at all, if no such standards actually exist?
Fred and Sharon go to Hollywood?
Suck it, SF.

How do people feel about movie "link-dump" posts?
Considering how well the Pan's Labyrinth thread is going-- how do people feel about the idea of a series of similar 'link-dump' FPPs about other Academy Award nominees? [mi]
Please don't post spoilers.
PLEASE don't be a spoilsport! I can't understand why people gleefully post spoilers. In the thread linked below (read it if you want some movies spoiled), one poster proclaimed "15 years is well past the spoiler expiration date." Maybe this is a joke (i.e. Milk Carton expiration date), but if not I totally disagree. A young person might see an old movie for the first time. He deserves to see it unspoiled. [link] [more inside]
Where's the line between being perceived as a shill and a real self-link?
Complete silence theatre
I had a crazy idea that I mentioned, off the cuff, in this thread. It seems there are many of us who hate it when people talk during movies. My idea: theatres should have special "complete silence" shows. During these shows, you would not be allowed to talk or munch popcorn. There would be an usher stationed in the theatre to enforce the rules. The theatre would charge double the normal ticket price (to pay for the usher and as a further deterrent to talkers).
I was surprised so many were into it. What if we contacted a theatre an proposed the idea? If we get enough people interested, they might go for it. There are many of us in the NYC area. And we could, perhaps, partner with other sites like ainitcool.com. What do you guys think?

We're not the pirates you're looking for
The inside track: requests for pirate copies of movies (even films you're too busy to see) are not cool here.
Weekly movies meetup in Toronto.
As per this ask.me thread, I'm considering starting a weekly movie screening at my (Toronto) house. A few people posted in the thread that I should email them if it goes ahead. I'm getting closer to actually doing it so thought I'd post officially and say that if this interests you, please post here or send an email to me at metafilter @ victoryshag DOT com and I'll send you an invite with details. {more}
