Adding tags to favorites February 28, 2008 5:48 PM   Subscribe

An idea about favorites.

After several years of "favoriting" comments that I find funny, or informative, or sad, or righteous, or interesting, I now have hundreds of favorites, and no real way to search through them. The recently changed interface is somewhat better, but I think I have an idea that could make favorites really awesome.

Would it be possible for us to add tags to comments that we favorite? The tags would only be visible to the individual user, and the user would have a tag cloud—only visible to him or her—on his or her user page. This would make searching for old comments much, much easier. What do you think?

I like this idea.

I'd use it.

I would not use this, although it might be nice to see the tag cloud for the tags all the posts I've favorited (or posts with comments I've favorited).

I just did a test, and discovered that when I search over my favorites, tags are not searched. So If I favorited a post tagged as "mashup" but the word "mashup" appeared nowhere in the body of the post, it doesn't get returned as a hit. This seems like a small problem.

No! WRONG! Oh wait maybe I should ready your post first.

Oh yeah that is a good idea.

It would be really nice if you could view the tag cloud with 3D glasses.

Have you seen the favorites search we added a month ago? It's not tagging, but you can search through your favorites for keywords.

I think that this was discussed fairly recently and Matt said it was going to happen. Couldn't be arsed finding the thread though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I'd use this feature if it was implemented. Mostly so I could sort between my 'hilarious' and 'insightful' and 'I really should read this thread later' favorites.

I'd also like to have the ability to draw little doodles of what we think each user looks like, and have those appear next to their comments.

I'd love this to be implemented, but only if we set up something so we all can watch tehloki try to do it to his.

I'd also love to see this implemented. Would be very useful.

Yay, I hope they do that because I'm in the same boat as interrobang.

I'd hit it.

It would actually be nice to be able to have both public and private favortags.

You could do this with ASCII art tags.

I've asked for this upwards of a dozen times -- private (or opt-in publically viewable or our profile, say) tagging of everything.

Never gotten a firm yea or nay on it, though.

I just joined last year and I already have a lot of favorites. Great idea

I think this is a great idea, though I can see it leading to comments like;

Favorited. Tagged as: evidence burnmaterial geteven exampleofhowyousuck

For those comments that you want to bring up, out of context, in a later discussion.

I can see people being so distracted by their tag cloud that they leave the house still thinking about it and get hit by a car because they weren't paying attention! Good point, quin—let's not do it!

I heard your dad went into the tag cloud and he ate all of the food in the tag cloud and they had to close the tag cloud.

So... you've never been so distracted by Metafilter that you've been run over? Shit, I can't count the number of times I've found myself looking at the underside of a car and thinking; Hmm, I wonder what cortex meant when he suggested that the pantsfish was an analogy for Christ's suffering on the cross... Ow! Who knew that catalytic converters could get this hot?..

Happens to me damn near monthly.

Jokes aside, I really do think this is a cool idea.

So, just in time for the first backtagging project to end, another will begin. We can get tehloki's tags done, guys!

Maybe someone can write up a script to just auto-tag his TPS favorites as stalker-ish.

These favorites you speak of, they self-sort?

I was just about to ask about something like this or a way to group favorites. I favorited a recipe and started thinking it would be nice if I could separate all the recipes from my other comments.

Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the tag cloud making babies and I saw one of the babies and then the baby looked at me.
