Ness! Ness! Ness! March 9, 2008 7:32 AM   Subscribe

And seven years later, Super Smash Brothers Brawl has landed. I would love to smash some MeFites.

I'm about to run up to pick up my copy, but I spent last night gleefully engaged in zany cartoon violence with a couple friends. I figured (and maybe I figured wrong) based on both the number of people I saw waiting in line last night and the widely varied demographic of said people that maybe some Metafilter folk would be interested.

Nintendo's online play implementation isn't exactly intuitive, and requires we exchange some unreasonably long string of digits known as the "friend code". I'll post mine as soon as I get back from the store.

Anybody else?

HAHA! I was gonna post something like this too!

I too would indeed enjoy some smashing of brothers at some point! Pikachu sustains himself with the BLOOD OF OTHERS!!!

Remember we do have the gaming section on the metafilter Wiki so feel free to add your Wii number there, and Brawl number (they use that, right?) so we can get down to some dirty final smashes.

That goes for everyone else as well! ;) And any other systems or Steam games (the tf2 tourny is up and running huzzah!).

Well, if that makes this post redundant feel free to close it up.

So that then a different bunch of nerds can kick the crap out of me...

It looks like the Wii console codes are different from the Nintendo Wifi Connection codes that are in Brawl. Wii codes are 16 digits, Wifi codes are 12.

YOU GIVE ME YOURS AND I GIVE YOU MINE, K?

flatluigi: "I was using the GCN controller until my little bro used the Wii one and sounds came out of its speaker. I'm going to try to migrate."

I'll make a confession right here and say this is the first Super Smash Bros. game I've ever played. I actually bought a used copy of Meleé, but the fucking disc was scratched and that was the only copy my local GameStop had.

That said, I went to GameStop's tournament last night, and all they had to use were the Wiimote/Nunchuck setup. As soon as I was done there (I was there for about 3 hours), I brought the game home and got acquainted with the actual controls (as they just threw us into the action without any warmup). I tried playing with the Classic controller, but it was just weird.

Anyway, I'll add you back later tonight.
posted by booticon at 5:45 PM on March 9, 2008

No worries, boot: I've found that the SSB series is fairly easy to get into. How was the tournament?
posted by flatluigi at 6:25 PM on March 9, 2008

Pretty freakin' unorganized. After the staff managed to kick most of the non-participants out, we all had to get in a line behind the kiosk so the manager could get our names (or what could fit in the very small textbox in Brawl) and the character we wanted to play as. Most of us (including me) picked Samus.

After about a half-hour of this, the manager realized that he set up the tournament with all CPUs. *facepalm* So about 20 more minutes of calling people's names out to repick their characters.

So we finally get going after all that. I was the very first guy up to compete, and like I said in my previous post, I was eliminated right away in Sudden Death.

More waiting around for the tournament to finish. I BS with the employees and share a laugh about all the dumbassed rumors about the company that run on Joystiq/Kotaku. I try watching the tournament, but everybody's packed around the little kiosk they have so I can't see anything. Kids are screaming. I'm only 22 and I very easily could have been the oldest person there. It felt like a sausage fest. I felt kinda dirty.

Finally, at about 11, after everybody's paid, we all get in line and stand around for an hour. And at midnight, we got the game.
posted by booticon at 6:34 PM on March 9, 2008

That sounds horrible, boot. They didn't even bring out a big TV for the tournament?
posted by flatluigi at 6:36 PM on March 9, 2008

(damn hitting the post button too quickly)

I was planning to go to the local Gamestop for the tournament but I didn't think many others would go. Plus, it turned out that I preordered at the GameStop in the mall so I didn't even bother. Hopefully you're having fun now.
posted by flatluigi at 6:38 PM on March 9, 2008

Definitely. And I traded in a bunch o' games last week, and it turns out I preordered it twice (don't know how I pulled that off) so last night all I had to pay was around $10.

My Brawl Code: 0989-1373-6857

I was initially having problems too with 'With Anyone', but, after doing unspeakably dangerous things on my router -- including completely exposing the Wii to the evil evil internet by putting it into the DMZ -- everything seems to works fine now. If you're getting error code 86420 you can try setting up DMZ/virtual server, and that should help you. I've even played a few 4 player matches after fixing it. Oh, another thing to try is to change your wifi channel to 1 or 11, as that can improve performance + reduce lag.

It is widely available - as I learned to my chagrin after ordering it online for in-store pick up at Best Buy. I could have picked it up from a myriad of places before I got to Best Buy, often for cheaper than I had already paid, and when I got to Best Buy they were in the middle of a Wii-sale and tried to make me wait in a 50 person line for a game I had already paid for.

posted by ND¢ at 3:18 PM on March 10, 2008

Not to totally derail, but the problem with the lightsaber game upcoming for the Wii, as well as the Zelda game that launched for the Wii, is that there's not a 1:1 relationship between how you move the Wiimote and how the game reacts.

I get the impression that it's basically "wave the Wiimote around and your character will slash at stuff" - it's OK, but it's not what I really want.
posted by kbanas at 3:23 PM on March 10, 2008

Speaking of which, the lightsaber in Smash Bros. is even more blatantly lightsaber-esque than ever! It even makes the VOOM sounds in this version. Does anyone have any idea how they're getting away with not getting sued by Lucas Arts? Are they just being cool, or did Nintendo ask permission.

Also, I'm positing my Brawl ID as soon as I get home. I have yet to successfully do a final smash yet, though.
posted by ignignokt at 3:34 PM on March 10, 2008

God that sounds so sucky that it must be true. I want to hold the wiimote vertically and tilt it two inches to the right and have my character hold his lightsaber vertically and tilt it two inches to the right. The "wave the Wiimote around and your character will slash at stuff" holds no attraction for me. Oh well. Someday there will be holodecks.
posted by ND¢ at 3:35 PM on March 10, 2008

The final smash took me awhile to figure out. I accidentally did it right away with Samus, but it was completely by accident and it boggled my mind.

....And some day there will be holodecks, and I will never, ever, never leave.

Yo guyz, I cleaned up the Wiki a bit with a subsection for Brawl. I've also noticed there's a bit of confusion w/ your Brawl name, as it can't fit most of ours, so be sure to throw that in, too. The ones that already put in their Brawl codes I just cut/pasted into the new section.

Dr-Baa: "phaded, does that help reduce latency during online matches?"

It definitely seems to. I had found that the first match (against friends or otherwise) was always a little laggy; I assume that's because they use that match to establish the connection. I haven't noticed that since I changed the DNS servers to match the ones in what I linked. It's still not perfect, but it's much better than it was.

It seems fairly global that all the online games with anyone have an input lag of about half a second. Games with friends don't have this problem, so you'd be better off trying that.
