Could the Older Post/Newer ( « Older How exactly would one procure,... | How can I transfer iCal items ... Newer » ) post navigation be included at the top of the comments page so one does not have to scroll to the bottom to move to the next post? Perhaps the links would only be present if the number of comments extended below the fold.

The thinking was, I wanted people to read the comments, and encourage users to read everything, so I just put them on the bottom. I know some extensions and greasemonkey scripts do it, but I'll consider it, yeah.

What?Matt mean you designed MetaFilter in a way that would encourage users to read ALL the comments in ALL the threads? Shockingly user manipulative! But what is even more shocking is that Matt was watching the site (his equivalent to "at work") at 6:46AM Pacific Time on a Sunday Morning (local sunrise: 6:54AM)!

I have long wanted this feature. Thanks for considering it.

It'd also be useful for the "older/newer" links on comment and post history pages. Putting them at the top as well as the bottom of the page would make it easier to look back for a comment without scrolling down.

Wendell, I thought it was Monday morning and was trying to get a jump on the day when a cat woke me up. Imagine how pissed I was when I realized by 8am that it was indeed Sunday and I needn't hurry to wake my family up with the breakfast I made them.

I think this is a horrid idea. The site doesn't need any more clutter, especially at the top of the pages. On history pages it would be okay, but not at the start of a post or incorporated in the standard header.

I don't know that I'd go so far as "horrid" D.C. and good user interface isn't clutter.

Often I don't want to read the comments, particularly after reading the "more inside"

It would be nice t more from post to post with out having to back out or scroll to the bottom of the page. Particularly useful in AskMe when it's good to read the entire question to ascertain whether one is able to supply a response.

I could see it being useful, but I had gotten really adept at hitting that 'End' button and just clicking the next link when I was done reading a page.

Though, to be honest, I hardly ever use those navigation arrows anymore. I generally hit backspace to go up a page to the main list, and choose the next thread that way.

It would be nice to skip to the next or previous post even when looking at the middle of the thread. This feature might be best addressed with an undocumented keyboard shortcut. Maybe it already has. I don't know.
