Custom Folders for MeFi Mail November 12, 2008 8:49 PM Subscribe
I was wondering if there were any plans to implement custom folders in MeFi Mail that we could move MeFi e-mails to? If not, can we have them please? They could appear in the form of extra tabs next to the 'Your Sent Mail' and 'Your Contacts' tabs.
Also, while I'm at it, adding a 'tags' link at the top of the MetaTalk page would be great too.

You get enough MeMails that you need folders? Clearly I am not spending enough time here.

We're not trying to replicate gmail. No folders, sorry.

It would be kinda nice though to have at least ONE place for the MeFi Mails to go once we are done with them. I don't want to delete the mail, but I don't want an endless inbox either.
(Yes, I have it all forwarded to gmail too, it's just nice to click over to it sometimes when I'm already on Metafilter and I want to read an old MeFi Mail message.)

I was going to better explain why I wanted them but iamkimiam said it best.
But if the word is no folders, then fair enough. I'll set about deleting the most unneccessary MeFiMails in my endless inbox soon.

Oh, and since you MUST respond to MeFi Mail through Metafilter, it'd be nice to have a third option besides IN(box) or OUT (trash), so you don't have to look at and rifle through a messy inbox just to write somebody back. (Can you tell how much I hate to throw things away?)
I guess I just like to keep all my Metafilter things at one place.* It's why I'm reluctant to add threads to Bloglines/Reader. Or put/tag all my favorites on Delicious.com. Or respond to MeFi Mail through Gmail. It just seems silly to me to have three additional web pages open just to make the one website I use the most more functional, when that functionality could be minimally built in to suffice the need. Don't get me wrong, I do use Reader, Delicious, and Gmail to manage my Metafilter, but I'd rather it be for special cases of excellence, not out of necessity.
*This is part of another reason I don't delete MeFi Mail. I keep everything Metafilter on Metafilter as a "master reference". The delicious links, RSS'ed threads, and Gmails are all a subset of favorited, followed, or emailed items that can be found at their originating location, Metafilter. Trying to go the other direction would be insanity.

It would be nice if there was an option to control how many Mails were displayed on a page, say 20, 50, 100, 250, 500. I got 16 pages of Mefi mail at the moment and that will only group, so going back through is kinda awkward, but no biggie. Just a suggestion.

iamkimiam you know there's a list of your contacts with little "mailme" icons next to them on the third tab, right? I'm not saying this is perfect and I'd also like search capability in MeMail (speaking as possibly the heaviest MeMail user on the entire site) but it's a little better....

Can you also provide us with a broom so I can clean out all the cobwebs in my MeMail inbox?

I think the stock response to folders in MeFiMail is that it's probably a better idea to use your real email client for this and send your MeFiMail over there instead. While I could see a few more features that a barebones messaging system could have, I don't think we want to re-invent a mail client.
