Bummer. Why didn't my UHF gag work? It worked in the preview, and it looks like it's still in the code.

Why didn't my UHF gag work?

There's no event handler to assign the window status to. I think you want:

onmouseover="window.status='bad news for spatula city' ; return true;"
onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;"

Either way, it looks like the tag balancer removes any scripting/ event handlers.

Yeah, Matt, I saw a commercial on TV a week or so ago which mentioned Pancake Day, but I don't remember them mentioning a free stack... How exciting! If your sources are correct, all patriotic Metafiltarians near an IHOP should avail themselves of the free golden cakes o' goodness. Almost like an offering or sacrifice to the great MetaGod, ensuring a fertile and bountiful Metafilter year to come!

Or if Mr. Haughey is the great MetaGod, perhaps we should make the pancake offer directly to him, stacking them reverentially before his doorstep.

w/r/t matt's post about free pancakes at ihop, i can verify that this was the case last year in florida, but i find no proof that they plan to take it nationwide this year.

although i did, coincidentally, spot this* (click & scroll) blurb in my local gannett mouthpiece about a related program (shrove tuesday charity fund-raiser...but without free pancakes) in new york state.

sorry to be a party pooper. perhaps we should protest with synchronized local metafilter gatherings to be staged outside ihops worldwide on february 12th. we can boop (bring our own pancakes — with or without the graven image of mathowie upon them) and distribute them to passers-by, cutting into ihop's profits for the day.

The Great Pancake Day International Rivalry. Olney, England vs Liberal, Kansas. Olney had a winning streak in the mid '80s, but Liberal's own Lisa Spillman has bagged the last three consecutive years with a pretty good lead each time.

I did my usual "open eight weblogs, command-click twenty or thirty links, then read" sweep this morning. I was baffled when I came to the pancake window, and assumed it was some new form of pop-under I'd inadvertently triggered.

Just another bit of web surrealism, I guess.
