DC Meetup - No reason, just cuz August 20, 2009 8:48 PM   Subscribe

Does 9/20 Sound like a good time for a DC Meetup to anyone?

I think it'd be a pretty good date, in any case.

(Okay fine it's because Cortex'll be here)

Sunday, September 20, 2009... the best DC meetup time ever proposed!

My calendar seems to be able to handle that.

Metro access, please.

Also I'm totally in for little e's debauchery idea as long as said debauchery has a low barrier to entry to generally, uh... "baucherous" attendees.

Basically, if I order a mixed drink that turns out to be code for "I will smuggle heroin into an orphanage for you" I will be extremely cross with you all.

ps I believe this is mixed up. It is my understanding you adopt the orphans, then they smuggle for you.

Can you just adopt a flawed premise and make that a drug mule? Because I have some pretty good theories about why the government is using contrails to fix the cable news network ratings, and this coke isn't going to cut itself.

To be clear, this is a segment in the Road Trip portion of the journey, which means I'll be with my brother French Fry, so if someone can put not just me but us up, that'd be key. We get along, we can share a room and a bigger-than-twin bed with a minimum of kicking and punching.

MrMoonPie, it sounds like there is no way I can't see your office, yeah. I don't even know what it is, but I am stoked.
posted by cortex (staff) at 7:33 AM on August 21, 2009

We have plenty of room for both cortex and French Fry, as MrMoonPie can attest. We do have two cats and a keggerator for homebrew which will unfortunately probably be empty by then. I've learned that it is very unpleasant trying to cook up a batch of beer in the DC summer. Might have some homemade sake to sample, though.

I've never been to a meetup before (and I'm leaving DC at the end of the year, so this may be my last chance to chill with the DCers), but I think cortex's visit is as good an excuse as any to take the plunge. I'm in.

So we've been planning this meetup in another thread, for some reason.

MrMoonPie says Brickskellar. I agree: it's nice and has all the beers you need for a $5 Flameout. What say we start around 6 PM, so all the nice folks with kids and those of us who are too old to operate without sleep can meet cortex, too?
posted by anotherpanacea at 9:35 AM on August 21, 2009

I am down with Brickskeller.

It's near dupont circle, which is handy for those of us that can take monday off and want to engage in late-night debauchery.
posted by empath at 9:47 AM on August 21, 2009

Brickskeller would be great. My only gripe is they charge 3.25 for a can of Schlitz or PBR. There is a pretty decent (and cheap) sushi place around the corner, too. I remember them having a reasonable selection of sake.

I'm always game for late-night debauchery.
posted by Loto at 10:01 AM on August 21, 2009

Brickskellar. I agree: it's nice and has all the beers you need

Just make sure you have a few options chosen when it's time to order; odds are they'll be out of your first choice. And maybe second choice. (Not to knock it; it's a good place.)
posted by inigo2 at 11:41 AM on August 21, 2009

I can only assume it's a given at this point that the Pterodactyl/Bulgaroktonos household is always up for late-night debauchery.

In all seriousness, we would love to come! Can't wait to see you all and we will be honored and humbled to meet Cortex (I mean, maybe; it's possible he'll be a huge disappointment. Basically what I'm saying is he'd better have wings or three heads or something or I'll start to wonder why I even bother reading Metafilter).

I think then, we should settle it at Brickskellar, at whatever time Cortex tells us he can make it there.
posted by Navelgazer at 2:06 PM on August 21, 2009

I'd say we can safely plan for late afternoon or early evening; in theory we'll just be in Baltimore the night before and that morning, so the schedule will probably be pretty darned laid back for that day.

I'm (most likely) in for the Brick at 6 on the 20th.

Possible alternate: Little Miss Whiskey's has an amazing selection of beers (and very cool decor) but is not all that Metro-able. I know there is some sort of H Street shuttle from Union Station but I've never taken it.
posted by JoanArkham at 6:51 AM on August 22, 2009

I've never been to Little Miss Whiskey's but it has the advantage of being withing walking/stumbling/crawling distance of our guests' accommodations. Plus it opens at 5:00. Personally, I'll have to drag my ass to work early the next day so I'm fine either way.
posted by exogenous at 8:28 AM on August 22, 2009

Shuttle info here. I'm going to ask around and see if I can find someone who has had any first-hand experience taking it.
posted by JoanArkham at 8:39 AM on August 22, 2009

I've taken the shuttle once. It was fine -- we got it right across the street from rock'n'roll hotel, I think. It pulled up right as we came outside, though, so I have no data to the question of how often/reliably it runs.

(I'd vote for brickskeller, 'cause it convenient for me, but new is always fun, too.)

I've been to the Country Club--great food, nice atmosphere, pool and golf and skee-ball and fancy fun yummy drinks. Kinda pricey, though--worth it, I think, and I'd love to go back, but it ain't cheap. I'd definitely be up for anything on H Street, since it's nearby and cool and funky.

H St sounds great. I'm on a pretty tight budget, but the Country Club does look appealing. If the food really is good, then it doesn't seem terribly overpriced (for DC).

Not opposed to Brickskeller.

Brickskeller is like that weird dude you know who might be creepy or just awkward. You really can't tell.
posted by mathlete at 10:25 PM on August 23, 2009

Brickskeller looks like the easier place to meet; the H Street Country Club does intrigue me, but having to take the shuttle is a bit of a drag, and the prices look about the same for a more limited beer selection (if beer is the order of the day). Although admittedly, the food and mixed drinks do look better at H Street, so maybe it's a wash depending on what people are looking for.

Every time I've gone to the Brickskeller I've ended up downstairs where it's just bottled beer, but I've been told there's an upstairs room where they have cask beers as well as regular tapped kegs; not sure what their policy on tables is. We'd be getting there right as it opened, though, I can't imagine it'd be that hard to grab one.
posted by Kadin2048 at 10:31 PM on August 23, 2009

Heh, I think I went on a date with that guy last week.

My only visit to Brickskeller was the day I was here apartment hunting. I would have been happy basically anywhere warm with any food and beer, so I was not the most objective observer. They didn't have my first five or six beer choices or something ridiculous like that, but they blamed it being the week of Christmas.
posted by little e at 10:37 PM on August 23, 2009

I think not having any of the beers you choose is just standard operating procedure. But I'm not a beer guy, so what do I know? And hey, at least Dupont in more metro-accessible. I guess someone is going to have a tough decision to make.
posted by mathlete at 11:44 PM on August 23, 2009

I've been upstairs, it isn't bad. They had a cask Victory Hop Devil which was nice taste of back home. Plenty of room for a meetup.

I've never been to H street (that I remember), but taking a shuttle after coming from out past Shady Grove seems like a pain. Especially since I have to do the same thing to get back. Unless, of course, I just drink in the city till the metro opens again in the morning. That would be my preferred option. Otherwise, I'll be sleeping in Rock Creek State Park again...

My rolodex of burned bridges, jilted lovers, and former co-workers includes a Brickskeller employee. Give me a couple of days to track this person down and apply some pressure. I can't promise anything except letting the Brickskeller know we're a whole lot more fun than the average reservation and encouraging them to have the A-team scheduled (because Loto is going to be there and in a drinking mood).

I imagine that no sane bar manager would say anything but, "YES YES PLEASE YES!" at the prospect of 20-30 people booked early on a Sunday night. So gimme a few days and I'll report back soon on reservation details plus any deals I can score for us using my contacts.

Roadtrip, flexibility, day before is Baltimore so hitting town early afternoon at the latest seems like the likely answer.

Though there's nothing set up at all for Baltimore, so it could be even more flexible than that if that continues to be the case, heh.

I was going to play it by ear as the red line out my way still sucks ass and it is not unheard of for it to be shut down completely on the weekends/Sundays for never ending "trackwork" even before the accident last June. But if you need a number, I'm hoping to attend and will try not to be daunted by red line issues.

I was inspired by the direction the Philly thread is taking so I'll offer my backyard as another possibility for a meetup location. It looks like cortex and French Fry will be staying at my house, so it would be easy on the three of us anyway. I also promise not to advertise any beers that are not actually available.

It could be a little crowded out back if everyone is here at once, but there's space indoors as well. MrMoonPie has been over here on a few occasions so might be able to vouch for the place. For an after-party, those interested could easily migrate up to the bars on H Street.

We're less then a block east of Lincoln Park and sort of near the Eastern Market metro (just under a mile).

exogenous didn't mention his groovy retro basement lounge! It is a cool spot, spacious, easy to get to and to park at on a Sunday evening, and it's two blocks from me, so that's a plus, too. A couple of you came to the Lincoln Park picnic a while back--he's really close to that spot. AAANNND, his address is leet, very, very leet.

posted by JoanArkham at 7:34 AM on September 4, 2009

I'll add that the walk from the Eastern Market Metro is nice and safe. The Market itself closes at 5 on Sundays, but the area will still be well-populated. You'll walk on wide, pretty sidewalks past the homes of Gene Weingarten and Senator Carl Levin, then through Lincoln Park, which at that time of day will have, like, sixty thousand dog walkers in it. And exogenous' friendliest neighbor seems to have moved to greener pastures.

Sounds like we have general agreement, so let's plan on my place. How about 5:00 pm on the 20th?

I've updated my profile location to be more precise without revealing my home address to the greater internet. Google maps tries to guess the address from the lat/long, and it's very close but off one iota. I plan on having signage out front to make it plainly clear once folks are in the vicinity. As shown on the map, we're on the south side of the wonky intersection with the triangle park.

Anyway we'll have two small charcoal grills (Mrs. exogenous seems intent on grilling up some food for y'all), a cooler with ice, and a heavy extension cord in case empath brings a PA system. Feel free to mefi mail me with requests/questions/etc. Should be a blast!

I just now restrung the resonator ukulele in anticipation of the event. I'm having a problem with one of the tuning pegs, but we should be cool in two weeks.

I'll have that uke (concert size), a tenor uke, and a dreadnought guitar. I can bring over a (badly setup) Ovation and mini amp, if anyone wants it. I can also borrow my daughter's electric guitar and 25-watt amp, and, heck, her (low-quality) acoustic, if we're going to have that many hands. And two kazoos, a metal and wooden one. I think that covers it.

Definitely. There is a fair amount of parking around.

It almost goes without saying, but it's a good idea not to leave anything that might look valuble visible iinside the car. The odds of anything happening are remote (the crime rate here is lower here than, for example, Dupont circle), but I would feel lousy if someone had a window smashed.

Wow, this thread is up to over a hundred comments! We seem to have consensus, so here are the meetup details:

(1) Where: My backyard! See my profile for the location of the house (the address Google guesses at is not totally precise, but very close - look for Metafilter® signs on the south side of the street).

(2) When: It's on Sunday, September 20. I would like to start at 5:00 p.m. so we can wrap things up before it gets really late, since it's a Sunday and I like my neighbors. If you show up on another day, I reserve the right not to serve you beer.

(3) Transportation: probably the best metro stop for most is Eastern Market (just under a mile walk), but the Potomac Ave or RFK stops would work as well. If you're on the red line, the walk from Union Station is doable along Mass Ave (about a mile and quarter) and might be better than the transfer on a Sunday. There is street parking but be smart and don't leave valuables visible in your car. We can park bicycles inside or in the backyard.

(4) Food: Mrs. exogenous and I will plan on making some simple fare including vegetarian. We appreciate all the people bringing food, but of course no one should feel obligated to bring anything.

(5) Drink: We will have a big cooler and some drinks. Feel free to bring your own, but no obligations. My homemade sake turned out watery but drinkable, and will be available for tasting. Unfortunately my homebrewed beer tends to run out this time of year.

(6) Miscellany: The bars mentioned upthread on H Street are very close if people want to have an afterparty. We also have two cats: the black and white cat will have a collar and can go out, and the orange youngster should stay inside.

(7) Questions? I welcome MeFi mail.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I would be happy to bring something as well, just let me know what -- it sounds like there might be a fair amount of sweet already so I'd be happy to bring something savory as long as it involves minimal cooking and can be brought via public transportation (the minimal cooking is for everyone's benefit as if we all got ptomaine poisoning it would really put a damper on the evening). I can bake a lot better than I cook so if we want more cookies or whatever just let me know (I do have dinosaur cookie cutters so that's always a bonus -- pterodactyls included!).

Also not sure if it would help if I made nametags again but I'm happy to try (although I don't have access to a color printer).

Thanks so much for hosting, exogenous, and I can't wait to see people!

I have a wedding in Ohio the day before, and I might not be back. But I hope to make it. Are people really bringing guitars?

I'm flying into Reagan at 5:15 with minimal baggage so I'll be there unless the weather is bad.

I'm really bringing an acoustic guitar, a tenor ukulele, and a concert-sized resonator uke, Ironmouth. If things start rockin', I can go back for my acoustic/electric and small amp--I live a block and a half away.

I could get another acoustic, an electric, and a big amp, but I need to know a week in advance. You play? Bring something to play with!

(not that I'm, like, great or anything--you all were there when I got started. I think a total of 10 people have ever even heard me perform, and they were all in various stages of intoxication, around campfires and such. But I figure if my 14-year-old daughter is brave enough to play the 9:30 Club (god, I love bragging about that), I can start venturing out, myself)

I'm going to try to come! I had to bail early like a putz last time (poor planning -- maybe this time I will try for better) and still regret it.

OK, I totally misread that as:

Ok, in order to facilitate the bringing of beer (and due to the fact that the yellow/blue line has been so bad lately) Mr. Arkham has agreed to be my driver and chaperone for the evening. So I'm now a +1.

I'd like to come, and have it down on my calendar... I'd be happy to coordinate rides with others, if it helps. Approximate start location in profile.

I can bring potato salad--the Southern kind with lots of mustard.

Hey, cortex, since you're a budding drummer do you want to attend the Meridian Hill (aka Malcom X) park drum circle before the meetup? It's been happening every sunday from about 3pm to 9pm for 40+ years. I've been going the last two weeks and it's an incomparably good time. I can bring along some extra percussion gear for you. Anyone else who wants to come (even if they don't drum - they're are tons of dancers and general lookers-on) is welcome.

Oh huh. I dunno! I'll see what the day looks like and how things are looking with my copilot(s).

Yay! Finally a meetup not on the red line! I've never been to a meetup before, but maybe I will try to come to this one. (I'll have to overcome my "stranger danger" paranoia of going to someone's house where I know no one).

If it's any comfort, bluefly, there will be many others there in the same situation. There is no cabal.

Don't worry. It won't be as bad as you think.

Woah, me too! If I'm not too tired from all the flying and drinking and whatnot, I'll try to make it out to this.

I just showed up on the wrong day and yr neighbors offered me wine so I think you should invite them tomorrow. They were on the front porch and acted so unresponsive to the words Metafilter and Meetup that I assumed all the cabal rumors were true and nearly flipped out. Then I texted Empath and he informed me I was drunk. Nice neighborhood tho!

Bonus...easier to transport on the Metro.
See you all tomorrow

I'd probably want to wrap up by about 10:00 due to unfortunate work obligations on the part of Mrs. exogenous and myself on Monday morning. H Street has some cool bars and is close, though, if anyone wants to keep the party going.

Woo! Awesome Meetup. I just had to log on once I got home to see that post about the cover of Unknown Pleasures everyone was telling me about in reference to my shirt.

BTW, this is the steel band covering "Transmission" post that I thought everyone was talking about at first. This proves I'm not crazy. Mmm-hmm.

We just got in as well -- thank you SO MUCH to exogenous and his charming wife for hosting us all. Thanks also to cortex for his graciousness and good humor; I have no doubt that it is difficult to be pleasant to so many people over the course of a thirty day trip but he was unflaggingly cheerful and it was absolutely a delight to meet him (also I made him laugh like eight times which is my new high score at life).

As always, everyone was wonderful and it was such a great evening. Thank you all!

Ah, home at last. Had me a little mini-adventure getting back to my car a couple towns over. Caught the last train out of Eastern Market (thanks, MrMoonpie!), and managed to miss the train to my car. Yay for cabs.

Meetup was great. Thank you so much, Mr. & Mrs. exogenous, for letting a torrent of Mefites ransack your home. Actually... that was a rather reckless thing to do, in retrospect... honestly, what were you thinking?!

But if there's one thing I've learned tonight, it's that exogenous is almost as reckless with the spur-of-the-moment plans as I am! :)

As always, I was impressed by how normal you all are. And by little e's cookies, which at first seemed to put the lie to her claims that nothing good has come from Kentucky, until she noted the recipe came from Mississippi.

Wow. Definitely a peak moment in my life, jamming with strangers in front of strangers, first time I'd ever done such a thing, strumming along to songs that not only I'd never practiced, but had never even heard before. Thanks, exogenous, for setting the stage, so to speak.

Thanks, exogenous and Andrea, for letting us swarm the place. You have a beautiful home and a great neighborhood. Hope there wasn't too much beer left over.... :-)

To the Little Miss Whiskey's crew, how long did y'all last? I left around 1 and I was impressed by your stamina....
posted by anotherpanacea at 7:08 AM on September 23, 2009

Heh, I'm not sure what time we left, but I decided to come home and drink lots more beer then, of all things to do while intoxicated, attempt to book international flights. I believe around 4:30 I was sitting here mumblingly all by myself trying to decipher all those crazy words on Air France's website before giving up. (The next day I realized that their English language site does, in fact, abruptly change to French midway through the booking process. Yeah.)

Thanks exogenous and Mrs. exogenous! Your house is awesome, and your neighborhood is awesome, and y'all are awesome.
