Can we have have the ability to upload gifs as our profile pix?
I wanted to use this, but it was converted to a jpg. I can understand that file size could be a potential problem, and that you don't want outside-hosted images, but perhaps a size cap? Like no larger than 40KB?
Obviously, not the most important beast in the pony stable, but I just thought I'd ask.

I'd like my profile pic to be that bit, you know, in Texas Chainsaw Massacre - (the new one, not the old one) where she's in the van yeah and she's like I can't take like what I've seen and junk and she pulls out a gun and like totally blows her head off and then the camera totally goes THROUGH THE HOLE THE BULLET MAKES and all the people in the van are like "NOOOO!" but its too late because she's like the only one who truly escapes, yeah? It's like 7 meg and it's totally sweet.

It's up to pb but I'm really thinking animated gifs [as much as I like the one of you and your puppa] isn't likely to be an "omg we need this" feature request but I'll defer to the people who actually code the stuff.

Discovered the no-gifness when I tried to make this my profile pic. The non-blinky eye is almost just as good though.

The code we use to crop pictures only works with JPEGs, so everything is converted to a JPEG before that step. You can use a GIF now, it just won't be animated by time it's on your profile. There might be ways to detect the file format and skip the cropping step if there's a big demand for animated profile pictures, but that might end up confusing people who are both using GIFs and want to crop their picture.

It's possible to analyze uploaded images and only allow _non_ animated GIFs. Also, GIFs compress much better than JPGs for certain images.

I think the cool nerds are using APNG now (native support in firefox & opera), but MNG does have plugin support for all but Chrome.
