The welcome-back message on the front page reads 'x links and y comments posted since your last visit' (except, y'know, with numbers). But most posts contain more than one link. Would it be better to have it read 'x posts and y comments'? There's probably a downside I'm not seeing.

Hm. My browser reads x posts y comments.

(This might be the result of GM scripts, though)

Oh, sorry, on the blue it does indeed say x links y comments.

The downside you're not seeing is that IT WOULD RUIN EVERYTHING and would be yet another example WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

yeah, I see no downside either and it's more consistent with site lingo

Mine says "pousts" and "coumments".

(But seriously, it's probably just a holdover from the olden days.)

This irks me also, I think it would be a good change. Meta says "posts" already.

Yes, I think we should consider prohibiting multiple-link posts.

Can it instead quantify based on number of references to Sarah Palin and/or font critiques?

The link is not to the content of the post, it's to the "more inside". Therefore it is correct.

QED.

As someone who works extensively with 18th century books, I would just like to take this opportunity to point out IT'S A LONG S NOT AN F FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST! LOOK AT THE CROSSBAR! DOES IT GO ALL THE WAY ACROSS? NO, IT GODDAMN WELL DOES NOT! IF ONE MORE STUDENT ASKS ME "WHY DO THEY USE Fs INSTEAD OF Ss?" I'M GOING TO GO ALL SAMUEL JOHNSON ON YOUR ASS!!!11!

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necefsary for one people to difsolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to afsume among the powers of the earth, the feparate and equal ftation to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they fhould declare the caufes which impel them to the feparation.

I came across a copy of a certain document when I had just learned to read, and went for years under the impression that English used to be spoken with a lisp.

I foresee a long discussion over the precise wording, resolved by pb implementing a preference to set in the user profile - which will enable users to choose between
"x posts and y comments"
"x links and y comments"
nothing at all
and, for some reason, Esperanto ("x ligoj kaj y komentoj").

There will then be a debate as to whether the Esperanto for "x posts and y comments" should have been included, followed by another one about what precisely the Esperanto for "post" is.

Common misconception. It's just that at that age it was fashionable to be eating popcorn all day long.

What's on the back of the declaration of independence is not a fancy map. It's just a lot of greasy fingermarks.

My first thought - "This sounds like a job for - Greasemonkey!" was closely followed by "At what point does using Greasemonkey become abusing Greasemonkey?"

Also: "ye olde postes & commentes."
posted by Pronoiac at 4:18 PM on December 10, 2009

One time I served on a jury for a greasemonkey abuse trial. The defense had a pretty good attorney who got a lot of the physical evidence thrown out so they needed the poor little greasemonkey to testify. He was all like, "Yeah at first it was pretty innocent, we were all just doing the usual things -- you know, adding quote features, showing deleted posts. We all had a pretty good time. But later they started mixing mojitos and taking huge bong rips, and I'd never done that before and didn't want to seem lame so I just went along with it. It got real late and then this one guy told me we should listen to records in his room, but when we got there he made me do strange things like automatically ZALGOify words for him and change the Post Comment button into a picture of a unicorn. I was humiliated but I was so blasted that I couldn't refuse. Then his friend came in and they held me down and forced me to do drawings with Unicode characters of penises. They told me if I didn't do it they'd tell everyone that I was a huge tease for offering to change the word 'faved' to 'hamburger' and then not being able to go through with it. I picked up my scripts and just ran out of there crying. I couldn't even leave my house for three days after that." True story.

Nah, just one quibble: If it changes to "posts and comments" drop the "posted," so "10 posts and 540 comments posted since your last visit" becomes "10 posts and 540 comments since your last visit." Much cleaner. Heck, "posted" could be dropped even if it doesn't change.

I first read that as "welcome back massage" and wondered if MeFi had started giving out back rubs to those of us who kept coming back day after day. Sitting in front of the computer all day does take its toll.
