Words With (Metafilter) Friends February 10, 2010 9:31 AM   Subscribe

Words With Friends Free is a free implementation of Scrabble for the iPhone. One of the nice things is being able to invite players by username. Let's get our words on; post your Words With Friends username here if you'd like to play. I'm on Words With Friends as "DWRoelands". (I am assuming these sorts of posts are still okay, based on the similar Spore thread from a while back. Please delete if things have changed.)

Speaking of Scrabble on the iPhone, I bought it the other day.

It doesn't support bluetooth play against one's spouse. What a complete, dick-headed waste of my money. EA and Hasbro: assholes to the max. Lazy fucks knock out a lame implementation and then have the gall to charge five bucks.

My idea: create a Scr*bble engine, where the players define where the bonus score tile locations are placed, the size of the board, etc. It won't infringe on the asshole's game patent, while at the same time allowing individuals to go right ahead and violate the hell out of it all on their own. I think I'll name it "Fuck you, Hasbro."

Yes. 1000x yes. Words with Friends may be buggy at times and the dictionary is laugh out loud absurd and the servers grind to a total halt frequently, but it's leaps and bounds above Scrabble.

Coldchef, that's the nice thing about this you play when you can. One person plays, the other might play in 5 min or 5 hours.

ColdChef: I find most of my games last about 5 days or so on average, although I'm in the middle of one that's nearly a month old, so YMMV.

Fun bonus fact: if you're in a game vs eyeballkid and play the word "HATE", a small but powerful electric shock will be sent directly to his left testicle. Try it!

For what it's worth, I like scrabble for the iphone.

They've done a number of substantial updates. I bought it a long time ago to play against the computer and it worked pretty well. Then they added facebook support, which is sort of like words with friends. On the down side I think you need to use facebook to play that way. On the plus side there is a flash client for people who don't have iphones.

How can scrabble over the Internet possibly work? You can destroy your opponents by having a dictionary or solver out and there's no way the software could know.

My friends are all cheaters. I guarantee that they don't even know half of the words they're playing.

YES! I have really been enjoying losing games to random strangers (and my husband) through this app, now I can lose to Metafilter people! I'm signed up as Onlyconnect. This game is using some weird dictionary that thinks "qi" is a word, though!
posted by onlyconnect at 8:11 PM on February 10, 2010

Onlyconnect totally let me win. She had "q" as her last tile and had set it up to have "qi" in two directions, and the closout point accounting would have put her over the top. Bah.

I'm NortonDC in there, but I would probably be a frustratingly slow opponent.

For those who hate the ads, there's a pay version that costs about $3, I think, and it was worth it to me to get rid of them.

Despite the fact that I have a laser-like focus on being utterly crap at Scrabble I got this installed and registered with the name majick_

Sorry about the punctuation, but like usual, if I don't get to a new namespace very early in its availability my dirt-common username is long gone. I should be fairly responsive most of the time, as I'm usually near my phone.

....aaaaaand it just stopped matching me with random players and tells me to "check back later." So feel free to start games with me to replace my sudden loss of player supply!
posted by majick at 7:00 AM on February 13, 2010

...and now it has started crashing every time I open it. This is weird, since it worked really well yesterday!
posted by majick at 7:49 AM on February 13, 2010

Yeah it seems hit or miss with me crashing wise too. I had some times when one game would crash continually but then I get into others same problem. You get what you pay for I guess. The fact that it works at all over EDGE is pretty impressive to me. (Yes, I'm the lame guy checking my games in a bar.)

Still though, I'm enjoying it more than I thought. I hate playing Scrabble because I feel like I should be better at it than I am and am very competitive. I've been lucky enough to play against people who don't know all the tricky short words of high point value that a lot of Scrabble freaks tend to use.

I do appreciate that it's been more stable over the recent days.
