Mefibrarians descend upon PDX; Meetup and possible 10.6.1?

PLA is in Portland March 23 - 27. Any other Mefibrarians PDX-bound? I'd love to get together Friday night 3/26 Downtown or nearby. I know there's this discussion going on, so without wanting to mess up the versioning scheme, it would be great to meet some portland area mefites if the timing works out. Any suggestions for a time and place?

I may still be there by then. I'm giving a pre-conference talk about reader's advisory.

As a non-librarian I would totally crash this party and attend.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 12:14 PM on February 26, 2010

Yeah, I would absolutely crash this party as well.

And wait...Jessamyn is going to be in pdx??? You know we're having a meet-up in the 20th...
posted by Lutoslawski at 12:31 PM on February 26, 2010

The 20th is my one weekend at home all month, I don't think I'll be in PDX on the 20th, but I may make it a longer stay and be there for some of the week.

As an unemployed librarian, I might try to make it on the 26th.

I'm doing a preconference too; should we consider a midweek meetup instead? Friday night is just a starting point. Throw out some dates when your travel plans are settled, Jessamyn, so we can shoot for a multi-mod meetup. Also, non-mefibrarians please crash so we talk about things other than LIBRARIES

Whoa...you know...if we had a little meet-up for Jessamyn...and maybe Matt could come...and then Cortex could come...and maybe even pb and HOLY SHIT 4 MOD MEET-UP. Perhaps the world would explode.
posted by Lutoslawski at 2:28 PM on February 26, 2010

I have to be there for that! Jessamyn is the only Stateside mod I haven't met yet.

20 March was only a suggestion; feel free to change it as you see fit. I actually only threw it out there so that I could get 10.7 on the books for Enchanted Forest.

So what do you (collectively) think about just changing 10.6 to the 26th?
posted by geckoinpdx at 2:33 PM on February 26, 2010

What do 10.6 and 10.7 mean? Wednesday would be better for me, but Friday is a possibility.

Lutoslawski: "maybe even pb and HOLY SHIT 4 MOD MEET-UP"

I think when that happens, Vacapinta is required to wait in the impenetrable mod-bunker until word is out that all the other mods have survived and are no longer in the same strategic location. You never know when Fark is going to attempt another coup.

jessamyn: mostly an in joke from meetups, the salient points are that the 10th anniversary meetup here in PDX got called 10.0, and we have so many meetups here that numbering them makes it much easier to reference past meetups.

jessamyn: what idiopath said. The convention is year dot sequential (not calendar) month.

The origin, if I recall: the lovely and talented dersins found and reserved the venue for 10 but ended up not being able to attend. A bunch of us decided that we should have a make-up meeting in his honour.

I think my logic went along the lines of "if we call next one 10.1, it'll sort of be like he never missed 10" or something. I was pretty plougedtired at the time. It just sort of stuck. Kinda like marshmallows.
posted by geckoinpdx at 3:43 PM on February 26, 2010

If moving the meet-up to the 24th or 26th means Jessamyn can attend, then by all means I say we move it.

My house is still open, or East Burn. Somebody make decisions. Not it.

I like Wednesdays better than Fridays for bar meetups because the bars are less crowded and loud.

I also like Lutoslawski's house, though.

My vote'd be for Bar On Wednesday, or House On Friday, whichever fits schedules better.

Perfect. Looks like it's up to Jessamyn (??)
posted by Lutoslawski at 7:34 PM on February 26, 2010

I'm okay with having it at your house, cheaper and easier to hear everyone. That work for people? Weds or Fri is probably equally okay.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:06 PM on February 26, 2010

I'm cool with that, if that's what people want to do. If it is at the house, I'd prefer it be on Friday, just because of that whole working thing on Thursday. We can hope for dry weather and have a fire out back with the requisite marshmallow roasting.
posted by Lutoslawski at 8:40 PM on February 26, 2010

I can't make it to anything on a Wednesday, but I'd be happy to go to Lutoslawski's house (or anywhere else) on Friday.

Bonus point for having it at Lutoslawki's: churl's Perfect Manhattans(tm) are not served at East Burn.

Oh dear. Well, I guess you're welcome to come at 8 am if you agree to make me breakfast.

Let's say 6:30, per normal? People can trickle in as they please. These things tend to go late, so, come whenever.

Could we get the side bar changed to say the 26th? I cleared it with the other thread.

I make a pretty mean scramble, but I think my girlfriend would wonder why I was cooking breakfast for some guy from the internet.

Oh, and I guess you're vegan, which makes both the egg and cheese portions of my scramble problematic. A pile of mushrooms, while tasty, is not exactly a scramble.

You get a scorecard and head to Jameson Square to watch for suburbanites.

Among the items on the scorecard: identically dressed twins in a doublewide, latte holders, the kid actually pushing the stroller itself, etc.

posted by Lutoslawski at 9:47 AM on March 15, 2010

Sounds great, I plan to be there. And not to rain on anyone's snark, but some of us with kids walk to Jamison Square from our nearby places.

We thought it was hilarious that a bunch of snotty rich people in $3000,000 condos were stunned that toddlers would want to come play in a 2 foot deep wading pool where water goes in and out like the tide. Who could have predicted that?!?!?
posted by msalt at 9:27 PM on March 15, 2010

Yes, but do you assault innocent passer-bys with your kids in strollers? Because that was what I was imagining- someone too busy with their phone and their coffee and their designer clothing and 5" heels and vanity minidog to watch where they're pushing the stroller.

I may have just rolled all the things that bother me about the Pearl into one, and imagined that the strange extremes I see sometimes happen more often than they do. And I don't mind working here, and I think Jamison Park is just fine. But I do think there could be some sort of people spotting/stroller or wild kid dodging game hidden in the situation.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go put in an appearance at American Apparel to refresh my hipster cred.
posted by Secretariat at 12:40 PM on March 17, 2010

Well, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I never wear my 5" heels in front of my daughters. Afraid they'll borrow them for dress up, and a size 12 stiletto is not cheap.

I'm with you on the suburban idiot imports, though, believe me. But since I live at 21st and Hoyt, it's the drunken fratboy whoooohooooo throw-cigarette-butts-all-around crowd that bugs me. (St. Patrick's day tonight, Lord help me.)

I think a lot of the designer Pearl crowd actually live there, in post-divorce, empty nest condos, and they're the ones most bugged by the tots, but your jadedness may vary from mine.
posted by msalt at 1:53 PM on March 17, 2010

msalt: secretariat pretty much nailed it regarding my intent. I lived very very close to Jamison for eight years and actually kinda liked that all these kids (and parents) were out there just enjoying themselves. I was referring more to the Botox Barbies muscling their way in the middle of the sidewalk and then getting pissed off at me for getting hit because they weren't looking.

You know, the same kind that takes their goddamn yappy dogs into the store with them.

Usually we do a sort of BYOB/W/L/Snacks thing. So, bring your favorite booze and a snack if you want. Hopefully it won't be raining and we can have some fire time outside.

Also, if you're driving to my house and you have any extra lawn chairs or camping chairs, could you bring them?? I've got a bunch, but I don't know how many folks were gonna have.
