The idea of deletion is not to rescue the thread for metatalk

The thread still lives!

There are a lot of things that MetaTalk is for none of which is this.

Hm? I see bunches of "Followup on this post" and "Update on this post" items, heck a few are live on the first page right now.
posted by cavalier at 9:27 AM on April 15, 2010

Did you even read the deletion reason?
posted by Sys Rq at 9:29 AM on April 15, 2010

I think the confusion is that there is still an open thread about this topic. The follow-up would make plenty of sense there.
posted by dirtdirt at 9:30 AM on April 15, 2010

(Actually, you know what? I take that back. The original "still open!" thread is now closed, which actually makes the deletion reason look kind of almost a tad anal.)

(Sigh. And, you know what else? Double takeback!)
posted by Sys Rq at 9:33 AM on April 15, 2010

no double takebacks!

(I was looking at the wrong thread, y'see. Consider my original snark re-snarked.)

Um, this thread is open as near as I can tell. I'll own up to being uptight if that's what's going on, but that isn't what's going on here.

DOUBLE TAKEBACK!!! DOUBLE TAKEBACK!!! Sorry Jessamyn!

No, your claim is valid, the followup is in fact still open.

So maybe this is where my disconnect is -- the thread's two weeks old and 9 pages off the front page.

Maybe I'm a special snowflake here, but I'm not usually refreshing threads from 9 pages ago when the comments themselves went dormant the day of the post (4/1) looking for an update. There was no pending update implied in that post, and I thought it was pertinent information that the case has now reached a point of no further continuation.

cavalier, people who posted in that thread will see an update via Recent Activity.

(I wonder if this is one of those cases where it's not visible enough?)

I do not understand your wacky takeback language. Is that a Canadian thing?

Maybe I'm a special snowflake here

Many people view the site through Recent Activity meaning they'd see an update if they had commented in the thread. The fact that the trial is now definitively over [as opposed to just decided] seemed like a minor update. Put another way, the fact that he'd won seemed like a big deal and really important to a wide swath of people. Today's post seemed like interesting news for people who were closely following, but otherwise a little inside baseball and updatefilter for the general public here.

So maybe this is where my disconnect is -- the thread's two weeks old and 9 pages off the front page.

But it's also searchable, and there's also Recent Activity which will pop updates right up to the top of the queue for anyone who has commented in there. So the path to finding-out-what's-up is not as arduous as it might otherwise seem (with RA it's even basically effortless).

So we're in a position of looking at it in terms of how long ago the open thread up vs. how big the new news is. This seems like basically confirmation of the likely direction things were already going, and the sort of thing that folks following closely would see one way or the other while folks not so much following it probably don't need an update on, is my take.

Since we're already jawing about the meta-topic in here I'm fine leaving this here, but generally speaking this falls on the far side of the "does this merit a new post" line for me, whether in the blue or in the grey.

That's going to result in a lot of grar about playing surfaces. Trust me.

Best stick to inside lacrosse.

Woooooaa! Recent Activity has introduced a whole new world to me. How in the world does this page not turn the server into jelly if most folks are using it?

Having seen that I can glib the "still open" rationale. Thanks!

If we're done on the whole takeback thingy we can drop this out -- unless of course someone wants to talk about eggplants.

Sometimes pb and mathowie allude to the strain it puts on the server—it does pull a big load.

They also tweak it a lot to try to adjust it to make it less heavy loadwise, but really it'e superterrific and works well a lot of the time. And reading monstead threads via recent activity can actually result in LESS load I'd expect, because you're not pulling down 1-3MB files. Though I may be unclear on the idea of load.

load.
