Would it be possible to add threads to Recent Activity without commenting in them?

This has come up before, and I was wondering if there's any chance of it being implemented. (Perhaps there could be an "add to recent activity" option next to "add to favorites"?)

I often want to keep tabs on a thread, and while I know I can bookmark it using favorites, I like the way Recent Activity shows me updates without my having to check each individual thread. (I'm lazy, I know.)

I have no idea how difficult this would be to implement, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks!

There is a "My Favorites" tab in your recent activity, which shows you recent activity in threads you've favorited.

We do this now through favorites. Just add the post to your favorites and you can keep up with them here. It's the "My Favorites" tab in Recent Activity.

Sometimes I want to follow comments on a post that I feel weird about favoriting. The most obvious example being the recent "Single Ladies" post. I usually just think of some comment. So, sorry for the pointless comments. Bye.

I feel strange about favoriting certain AskMe Posts and tend to lose track of them for this reason.

Just like midnight after the prom.

Damn, for some reason I keep forgetting about that page. I'm going to have to:
  1. Start favoriting posts and questions I want to follow.
  2. Include the Recent Activity on My Favorite Posts page in my MetaFilter instrument scan.

Me too, but there's always the RSS feeds for those.

Thanks for asking this question - I didn't realise this feature existed!

True. I should really figure out which one would be decent for my BlackBerry.

I favorite many posts that I don't want to read about in my Recent Activity; I hardly ever go to My Favorites for that reason (because it is cluttered with updates on posts where I don't care to read the comments). And I don't want to favorite many posts that I want to read about in Recent Activity. Those two things together deter me from using My Favorites as a way to have un-commented-in threads show up in Recent Activity (via My Favorites).

In other words, many threads I want to read are not favorite. Many of my favorite threads are not stuff I want to read about continually. And I certainly do not want to make pointless contributions to threads when I have nothing to say. I do sometimes comment anyway, in a somewhat benign way, so that I can strike that happy balance between structuring my MeFi world the way I want it, without being a total useless chatterbox. At least I try.

My 'Yes!' comment above...I was in line at the bank. When I got home, I checked Recent Activity, and was reminded that I wanted to return and leave a more lengthy comment later. No offense to you, cider, but this thread is not one of my favorites.

You just don't understand Metafilter, do you?

If the mods were to consider this change, it may be neat to have a line somewhere near this comment window that says 'No comment, just [add to Recent Activity].'

Also, I just noticed that 'comment' does not have a capital C, whereas the other sections are capped, i.e. 'Posting as', 'Live Preview', etc.
