Posting from the mobile site?

I see that you can comment on posts when you're using the mobile stylesheet. What's missing, though, is the ability to post. Is this a feature or a bug?

On the one hand, I could see why making an FPP from a mobile device would be tough, since copying and pasting a bunch of links would be difficult. On the other hand, it could be useful to allow posting to the green and gray without having to switch over to the standard site.

If you want to post from your phone you can click "switch to standard site" at the bottom of any page, post, and switch back. Posting shouldn't be a frequent activity so I think it's ok that it's not super convenient on mobile devices. And like you said, there might be advantages to sitting at a keyboard when you're posting vs. commenting.

So, "On the one hand" and "feature" win. I thought that would be the case. I didn't think it was a burning need but was curious. I use the mobile site so much that I want it to have all the features of the full version. But hey, if fake can conduct international relations from his phone using the standard site, it's good enough for me.

If this is a subtle way to see if there are any updates to the situation with fake and the Russian women, kudos, moviehawk.

Note that this also helps prevent people from drunkdialing Metafilter quite as spectacularly, which is, popcorn and pitchfork futures aside, probably a good thing.

...Posting shouldn't be a frequent activity...

I motion that all MetFilter members get a free mobile phone with their sign-up.

Top tip - All the mobile site does is change the CSS and some of the navigation. If the link isn't there it doesn't necessarily mean the page isn't...

On the other hand mobile posting anything more than moderately complex significantly increases the chance that you'll have to sheepishly mail the mods and ask them to have to fix something.

How do you open the mobile site? Does it have a specific URL or is it supposed to automatically recognize your phone and use the mobile style sheet? Because it doesn't work on my Nokia N97

Floam, the N97's browser is Webkit-based and it is a leading smartphone (granted: all over the world with the glorious exception of the U.S. :-) ).

I guess the user agent needs to be added to the detection code then.

Yeah, my keyboard was a bigger problem than the mobile stylesheet. The biggest problem I had was waiting for those ginormous threads to load... also the android browser tended to pop from landscape to portrait as I drove, so if I was in the middle of the page in one view, when it re-oriented, it would land in a different place. Hugely frustrating.

I repeatedly felt that the phone was the limiting factor and not MeFi. Wish I had MicroB on the droid- on the N900 it is the best browsing experience, ever.

One other thing that I noticed is that you get the "mobile/standard" switch only from mobile mode. I can't find it anymore.

Also, if a mobile version could preemptively disable mentions of donation dollar amounts, gr8 kthxbai

I still am in favor of drunkposting.metafilter.com

I don't mind reading the mobile Mefi on my iPod Touch but the screen keyboard is such a PITA that, if I have something substantial to say, I'd just get on my computer.
