How does metafilter stay troll free with an economy like this? October 1, 2010 3:13 PM   Subscribe

This post seems kinda trollish.

At least seems somewhat inappropriate for a friday afternoon. I'm sure the poster didn't mean it in this way. I've flagged and moved on. Except apparently not because I've posted something here.

I don't see it as trollish. I mean, what's to be gained? The guy asked a question about some general anxiety about the aconomy that he seems to have. He followed up once. My feeling was that it was late at night where he was and he was having those 4 am thoughts. If he started being a fighty pain in the ass with people who were trying to answer his question [and we've certainly seen that sort of thing in AskMe] I might think it was trollish but I guess I don't see your point. Do you think that people can't sincerely hold those beliefs? Or do you suspect that he doesn't, for some reason?

What does "inappropriate for a Friday afternoon" mean? If you think this is a trollish question, are there other days of the week or dayparts for asking trollish questions?

with the 24 hours news cycle yelling FEAR! RECESSION! and certain news stations doing all this while cutting in images of the great depression - well, it makes sense that some people are worried, are fearful. personally, i'd prefer people ask those questions out loud and receive reasonable answers. the alternative is that they let idiots like glen beck provide the explanations.

Here are a few other things that point to "not troll"

- the guy is using his real name
- there's no weird race baiting
- he seems concerned not fighty and seems open to people telling him he is wrong

Maybe I'm missing some read into it that others got? I can be a little dumb on subtext sometimes.

I see nothing trollish about it at all. Dude seems genuinely concerned. In other words, I agree with jessamyn.

I read this and hear a tinge of Chicken Little, sky-is-falling, etc., rather than troll.

Not a troll. Somebody trying to get informed. And in comes Mutant, to inform.

Should be all NSFW after 4 PM, Fridays.

Sorry, I guess it's not. My hackles went up when I saw a really broad, open ended question (though I don't see a "real" question in the post) that isn't really looking for a real answer. My mistake.

To make better use of this thread, without jumping into recipes, here are a couple of questions I've had on my mind:

Are there specific guidelines to flaggin?
How many flags does a post/reply have to have before the mods delete it, or is it on a case by case basis?
Does a mod see who flagged a post when a post gets flagged?
What did you have for lunch today?

Sorry, I think I'm a little punchy and reactionary today.
posted by TheBones at 3:31 PM on October 1, 2010

Don't worry about it. Whenever you see a question like this, take a deep breath and say "I'm sure Mutant is typing his rational, researched response right now. All I have to do is tap the F5 key and . . . ahhhhhhhhhhh, that's real good"

I thought you didn't want this to delve into recipes?

Troll posts are troll posts any day of the week at any time. I don't think MeFi (or AskMeFi) has rules about what day of the week or what time of day legit posts can be made.

I also don't think it's particularly inappropriate, and honestly I'm not really sure what the point of this callout is. You flag and move on if you think it shouldn't be posted; what's to discuss here?

Let me clarify- a question that can't really be answered, is really open ended, and is full of conjecture.

What did you have for lunch today?

i can answer this one! three eggs scrambled with roasted jalapenos & cream cheese - some rye toast on the side

yes, it was delicious

Mutant's answer was AMAZING- I am still somewhat of a n00b here so I didn't know a mutant existed on this board (not that I'm surprised at all).

As for it happening on a friday, I guess it's not friday everywhere.

I didn't think it was "trollish" (troll is a word that really shouldn't be tossed around so lightly), but I did think it was pretty chatty and vague, more like, "The economy sucks amirite? Can we have a conversation about that?" than a solvable problem. I mean, he says he has anxiety, but it doesn't feel like helping him solve his anxiety is the path the thread is heading down. It's having a conversation about the economy.

Are there specific guidelines to flaggin?

There's some stuff in the FAQ and maybe a little more on the wiki.

How many flags does a post/reply have to have before the mods delete it, or is it on a case by case basis?

Case by case, but generally speaking anything that's flagged even once in AskMe at least gets looked at. In MeFi we usually watch for collections of flags. In MeTa we don't pay too much attention to flags. Flags on the other subsites are rare enough that we usually check them out.

Does a mod see who flagged a post when a post gets flagged?

We have sort of a dashboard area that just shows "hot spots" where there's a lot of flag activity but doesn't include the name of the flagger. If we decide to dig deeper there's a page with the last 100 flags that does say who flagged it and why.

What did you have for lunch today?

At 11:30 I had cereal, at 5:30 I had an english muffin with peanut butter, dinner's planned for 9:30, so I guess an english muffin!

The word "trollish" seems kinda trollish.

It's a very woody word.

You mentioned you're still new, so I offer this advice:
You can always memail the mods directly about a question or concern you might have. I hear they have a pretty quick turn around time and can usually (as jessamyn did above) provide answers to your questions without the need to create a Meta thread.

I had a bangin' slice of cheesesteak pizza.

Lunch: Activia yogurt. I got the four pack for a dollar because it was on sale AND I had a coupon.

Theory for the "inappropriate for a Friday afternoon" comment: last week everyone crapped on WCityMike for his inappropriately timed Friday-night meta, and TheBones is extrapolating.

Missed lunch, but just had some mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves.

(per last 2 comments)

Wait, is this thread about everyone crapping now?

Roast beef, provolone, and horseradish dijon mayo on an onion roll, Cheese Nips, two doctor peppers and a bag of praline pecans

For lunch I had love. Yes love, served warm with 2 sides, hope and beauty, polished off with a bit of cheer. And Republican. Free range. Was a little gamey.

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight. Gonna grab some afternoon delight. My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right. Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night? When everything's a little clearer in the light of day. And you know the night is always gonna be there any way. Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

nomadicink, that sounds good, but I'm all out of love. I'd go to the store, but I've always heard you can't buy it.

You know, I flagged the thread, but also commented, trying to give the poster the benefit of the doubt. But now he has followed up twice and I think it's pretty clear the poster has no real interest in the answers. I don't think it's really a honest attempt at a question for AskMe, he either wants debate or a soapbox.

Yeah I hadn't gone back there today but it does really seem like more of a soapbox issue. I removed the OP's last comment and left a note.

Don't you have some town in some corner of Vermont to be visiting? You can't have been to ALL of them, can you?

I have actually now been to all of them. And I was doing some research.
