Chrome Web App-y Shortcut December 13, 2010 9:21 PM   Subscribe

I wanted a quick-and-dirty bookmark to MeFi in my Chrome Web Apps menu. Here's how you can do it.

Without uploading the code to the apps store, I threw together the basic graphic + JSON file necessary to make MeFi act like a web app in Chrome / Chromium. Download here and follow these instructions (basically, the instructions tell you to load it as an unpackaged extension). Couple obvious disclaimers:

1. All this really does is take you to Metafilter.com
2. The graphic I used, a slight modification of the iPhone favorite icon, is pretty hacked together.

If the mods are inclined to have this in the app store for free, then by all means. Otherwise, please take for your personal use only. Thanks.

Awesome. I was wondering how long this would take to be a done thing. And now it is.

Running Chrome 8.0.552.215, I get the following error:

"Could not load extension from '/Users/drhorrible/Downloads/mefi'. Invalid value for 'app.urls[0]'."

Looks like you might need to add a slash to the end of all URLs. Could you pop the JSON file into a plain text editor and see if that works?

It now installs as an extension, but I do not see a bookmarklet or shortcut in the toolbar.

It should show up on your New Tab page as a Web App. You may have to install a real Web App from the store to kick it into gear, I'm not sure.

You're right. Sorry, I misunderstood what this does.

The link's been updated to include a cleaned-up icon (thanks yaymukund), and to fix the trailing slash bug.
