Can we see favourites ordered by number and name? January 12, 2011 2:50 PM   Subscribe

Is it possible to have a "View favourites by username" feature? On a positive note, it'd require very little in the way of extra coding/templates.

On the profile page, I like how it is possible to see who favourited your posts etc, but what I think would be useful is to see the list of who favourited you by number of favourites they've given you.

E.g. :
"Person X has favourited 9 of your posts"
"Person Y has favourited 7 of your posts"
"Person Z has favourited 2 of your posts" and so on...

The query to select the data would be broadly similar to that which is already run.

The reason I ask is that in a place as big as Metafilter, it's not always easy (for me at least) to identify with other users. I think that were I able to see that person X has favourited quite a few of my posts, I might possibly find that person X and I have something in common. It's sort a way of making it easier to identify like minds on Metafilter.

I know it's a bit ethereal and I've not explained it very well, but I hope perhaps you'll understand what I'm getting at.

I think you can do this with the infodumpster, but it's not something I would personally want added to Metafilter proper.

Yeah, under the "Fans" heading on the dumpster you can search for this really easily; mind the subsite dropdown at the top of the page there as well since it does only the one selected.

If you have an even more specific or narrow bit of data you want to look at on that front, parsing the raw Infodump favorites data is the way to go.

We don't have any specific plans to expand the on-site favorites display options along these lines.

You learn something new every day. I had no idea the infodumpster thing existed.

Cheers!

Since I often click favourites without reference to the username, I'm now sort of curious to see the reverse:

"You've favourited 13 of person X's comments"
"You've favourited 7 of person Y's comments"

etc.

Whilst we're (very loosely) on the subject... as a newbie, what other MetaFilter related sites might I not know about? I know of the wiki and now the infodumpster, but that's about it.

metachat is a sort of related site that does a lot of things metafilter doesn't. Lots of mefi people hang out there.

Once you've found the wiki, you've found the motherlode since folks do a decent job of adding related stuff to it. A couple of good starting points are the Related Websites and Shadowy Back-Alleys pages.

Also from the wiki: Deleted Threads page mentions the unofficial deleted thread blog.

Hunh. For some reason I thought Metachat was an IRC channel.

There is an IRC channel for Metachat, #bunnies, on slashnet, which operates as a social adjunct to that site itself.

There's also #mefi on same, but it's not Metafilter's IRC in any reasonable sense so much as it is a channel on IRC populated in part by people who are or previously have been on mefi. It is an acquired taste.

Yeah, under the "Fans" heading on the dumpster you can search for this really easily;
Who favorited the most comments by grouse in MetaFilter?
Favorites User
71 tehloki
Huh. Who would have thought?

I love you and your favorites, tehloki.

Whose comments were most favorited by [Kurichina] ?

(Btw, the infodumpster is a Ruby webapp running on a not-huge slice at Slicehost. Ruby likes to eat all of the available memory and lock up the machine under not-huge load. Like now. If it's slow or not responding, it'll be back, uh, eventually.)

This would be a great way to see who wuvs you. Incorporate this into a dating site and I'm all in.

Fans is cool, but what I really need to know is who has a crush on me. I've been MeFiMailing every user number starting with 1 (hi, Matt!), but I keep running into the throttling limit.

Wow. The infodumpster is new to me and is awesome. Thanks knapah and Edison Lighthouse!

We could get a list of ponies by number and race them. BetMe.

I think half of my bookmarks are from people bookmarking dumb shit I've said so they can throw it back at me later. So it's kind of like already being in a relationship.

(ps I just got 20000 favorites. Where is the prize catalogue? I want to turn these puppies in for the George Forman grill.)

The sentence that makes chills run down a developer's spine.

Yeah, I was going to let that slide, but never ever ever ever ever say this to a developer even if you're quite sure you're right. Even if you are, it comes off very poorly.

The infodumpster is very nice.

I've also still got my user matching script that spits out a MeFiMail-able report with a bunch of top-10 lists of this kind of thing, and I'm still willing to run that for people and mail them the report.

That'll give you things like who favorites the highest percentage of your comments, in addition to absolute numbers, and non-favorite-based stats like who tends to participate in the same threads as you. And a bunch more stuff along those lines.
