The time has come to shed a burden that many of us share. So open that secret text file and hand over all those weird and wonderful potential usernames you've been hoarding ready for the brand new day that's never going to come.

I chose my username because I wanted to be disconnected from my actual identity but like two weeks later (and this is after like five years of lurking like nobody's business, so I had plenty of time to think about usernames) I put my name (etc) on the account and have ALWAYS REGRETTED not calling myself something more like "Carthago Delenda Est," "The Honorable Judge Cuddles," or "Killdozer." Though I suspect Killdozer has been claimed.

I mentioned in a past thread that I wish my username was "four out of five dentists." My AskMe advice would sound so much more authoritative, and people would shorten it to FOOFD.

Instead, I'm stuck with a bad case of l'esprit d'username, and a name from the video game I was playing at the time. If I had signed up earlier or later, I might have been Rydia or Bubble Man or Fat Ice Hockey Guys.

I wish I'd known I could have spaces in my name when I joined (despite having lurked for a couple months and reading names with spaces in them...), so I could've come up with something a little more snappy. On the other hand, just being Heretical is simple and elegant.

Does anybody actually do that for metafilter names? If you ever intend to use the name, why wouldn't you register it then and there, before someone else does? And if you don't intend to use it, why write it down?

On the other hand, I really do maintain a file called computer‑names.txt. It contains lists of good names for hosts, network devices, filesystems, and other computer stuff. Each class of device has its own theme. For example, filesystems are named after textiles. Related devices are indicated by alliteration or puns (ideally both).
