What are the all-time longest and shortest post titles? Broken down by subsite, if possible.

This'd be pretty easy to do with the Post Titles files at the Infodump. Note that there's a lot of potential "noise" in this data since in many cases the title will have been added later by a member of the backtagging crew, but most of the very-short and very-long stuff is unlikely to be their work so that may not really be a problem for what you're looking at.

MetaFilter has a maximum length of 200 characters for the title. There are 9 right at 200 characters:

One post had HTML that isn't displayed on the page. It was added before we started filtering for HTML more carefully. I threw it out because the extra characters aren't shown on the page anyway and we should probably fix it up.

Since Ask and MetaTalk threads can be extremely personal and/or contentious, I'll leave those as an exercise for infodumpsterists. I'm not sure that the extra traffic and potential rehash here from merely having long titles is fair to those posters.

Cortex, I totally blanked on the Infodump, sorry about that.

Thanks for doing some legwork, pb.

infodumpster-divers

Pfft. infodumpster-divers today have no idea how good they've got it. Back in my day, we didn't have all this high technology to protect us, and we had to swim the infodumpster with just a lungful of air and knife on our belt.

And let's not even talk about the data-sharks, lurking out there in the dark... waiting.

Dumpster diving was totally overrated...unless you were after all sorts of juicy HR information.
Passwords, usernames, off site data storage...not so much.

That Thaemlitz thread (Comatonse) was great. Nice trip down memory lane.

What about the shortest? This would be close, no?

Of course, with the minimum being 1 and the maximum 200, it's not really much of a contest.

oh yeah, there are 45 MetaFilter posts that have a one-character post title. Most of them are a period, probably obituary posts. There are 19 posts with other characters:

So, to win this contest, I need to find a way to fit a backspace character in a post title.
