Can you help me find that thing that does that thing March 14, 2011 12:56 PM   Subscribe

I have a new computer, and I am reinstalling all my special bells and whistles. What's that handy little app that puts an arrow on the left-hand margin of MeFi posts, scrolling you down to wherever you last were in the thread? And how can I get it?

Sorry for the bother- my searches turned up nothing...

You have shiny new computer and you bought it here?

You will find it in the Metafilter App Store. It's only $5.99.

You can send the cash to me, I'll make sure it gets to Steve Jobs for you.

I just installed the scroll tag because it was getting harder to keep up with the Japan earthquake post. I think I will also install the deleted post script, since my newly retired status is giving me extra time for Metafilter.

Now if only the scroll tag script played nicely with the new comment loading. That would be just about perfect.

Tagline joke remover? How horrid! Or maybe I mean:

Metafilter: twee Metafilter: tagline jokes.

Hmm, if there's such a thing as a tagline joke remover, then the work of parsing such things has already been done. Which leads me to my next question: What are the most-favorited tagline jokes of all time?

It's more likely the tagline joke remover looks for "Metafilter:" and gets rid of anything up to and including the ending punctuation, or a line break.

I had forgotten about the last read arrow. Now that I've reinstalled it, the universe doesn't seem quite so off balance.

rtha: "Scroll tag"

Does this work for anyone else in Chrome? It doesn't seem to save for me.

I haven't gotten it working in Chrome either, which is a bummer, because I love it and I love Chrome and it seems that they can NEVER get together and true love always dies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the concept of the "Howls of outrage" add on, but it seems to only work in the default color scheme and not the "professional white". Is there an easy fix to that?

Relatively so, unless you're really shy. You ask me to do it. I can endure professional white for the bit of time needed to make a change.

I fixed it ages ago since I am a professional white backgounder. Here it is.

S'ok, you find line 154 of the script which looks like:
		var aNode = currentNode.cloneNode(true);
and you add another line right after it which looks like:
		aNode.style.color = "white";
Should work OK in the non-eyekill default color scheme too. If you don't like white, change it to your favorite color. Commas change color in a different spot, though.

If you don't want to mess with the script, let me know and I'll upload a revision.

Memo: " Does this work for anyone else in Chrome? It doesn't seem to save for me."

I think this should be fixed, now. Update.

Nerd details: globalStorage isn't a standard. localStorage doesn't work cross-subdomain. Greasemonkey storage isn't portable. The only thing you can depend on is cookies. Thank you, fifteen year old technology.

Thanks Plutor! Seems to be working.

True love has come back from the dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You'll want to update again. There was a big bug in the library I was using to manage the cookies.

Heh, came in here to tell you that the saving seemed to crap out overnight. Updating now, will let you know if I see further problems. Thanks as always for your work on this. When functioning correctly, it improves my MeFi experience immensely.

So far so good after 24 hours. (Everything worked properly last time during the day, but then reset overnight, so that's a good sign.)

Did you make any progress in getting it to recognize the comments as they are loaded by the new on-page load more comments dealie? Not a big deal at all, just curious.
