Enhancement Suite for MetaFilter? March 7, 2012 5:34 AM   Subscribe

Enhancement Suite for MetaFilter?

So, I've been using Reddit's Enhancement Suite (RES 4.0) and have been so pleased with how it has, for lack of a better word, "enhanced" my experience of the website. Inspired by Scientist's Metatalk post about the greasemonkey script, I'd love a way to keep a couple notes on other users as well..

Like, Scientist knows his science.

and jaduncan knows his layman's law.

Any tools out there today? Any way to enhance the 1 tool greasemonkey scripts into a more general tool for the site?

Is that plugin giving anyone else a hard time in Chrome? I keep getting a message in the upper-right (next to logout) saying "sitewide notes off" and then clicking it either does do anything or changes it to on. Except the message seems to appear randomly and never stays "on."

namewithhe1d: keeping notes on us all. Must be eliminated.
Scientist: knows his science. Must be eliminated.
jaduncan: knows his layman's law. Must be eliminated.
Jpfed: appears quite helpful. Must be eliminated.
griphus: having a hard time in Chrome. Must be eliminated.

Thanks jpfed.. That's a start.. RES is much more developed at this point, and it would be great to have dynamic, or customized home pages based on the content I want.. among other things.

the quidnunc kid... first you have to catch me. I'm as slippery as the greased up deaf guy.

Have you looked at My MeFi and My Ask MeFi?

Is that plugin giving anyone else a hard time in Chrome?

It came up in another thread that that script doesn't work in Chrome. It uses a data storage mechanism that hasn't been implemented in Chrome. Memo mentioned an alternative.

As an FYI, here is the list of scripts and plugins for the site from the wiki. May not be complete.

Make sure you read the fine print on any "enhancement" tool, and if the effects last for more than four hours, see your physician.

See, I thought it sounded like the question my masseuse asks right at the end...sort of "Enhancement, Sweet?"

"Enhancement Suite" makes me think of Robotech, but instead the person is riding a pony and they get to shoot flags or favorites.

Yeah, a suite is not a suit, but I needed a mental diversion after Bob's comment.

Oh yeah? Hang on just one second.

Frank, pull my notes on dossier #80649. Right. Right okay. What's it say in column 6B? Okay, right. Amended? Got it. Is that it? Okay, good.

Screw you, buddy.

Here's the place where I'll admit that I loved the user notes plug-in until I got to used to it on my laptop and missed having it when on my phone -- which is how I read the site mostly non- 9 to 5. And then I realized I probably wouldn't want anybody to think I was an asshole based on one thing I said, so I shouldn't hold them to that standard.

What I'm saying is, from now, I'll only remember you're an asshole if you're memorable about it.

RES performance is a real mixed bag. For some people it seems to make the site intolerably slow, but for me with Firefox I can barely notice a difference, except for the occasional brief flash of custom styling before RES has a chance to remove it.

The best thing about RES by far is the keyboard navigation. MeFi has a similar feature with j/k keys to move, but RES adds numbers to each link in a comment so they can be followed without putting your hand on the mouse. It makes it easy to read lots of articles and comments quickly without ever using the mouse.

The MES should put a button next to every post and comment to instantly create a Meta post that doesn't link back or otherwise refer to said post or comment. Automatically generating a title like "so racism is ok now?" or "i didn't realize we were all americans" would also be helpful.

The Minimalist Suite provides a really great way to concatenate tons of various scripts into a single module with a really slick interface for customizing those "enhancements."

Might be worth building something there...

The QuickFox add-on for FireFox is interesting, integrated note facility (that description is WAY simplistic; it's a nice bit of software) that could easily be used to keep a note on each user. You could write as much or as little about each user in their notes, it's searchable (I think you can plug in keywords and search on them, so you could punch up "Scientist" and it'd find anyones note that has that keyword.

I've dinked around with it some, it caught my interest, I'm damn sure no expert at using it. But it doesn't seem like rocket science; like most anything else, you bang on the software for a while and gradually it opens up to you.

Here is the QuickFox add-ons page at Mozilla, here is the developers page, here is a video shows what the software does, a fairly well-done demo.

As I say, I've banged around on it some, should anyone start messing with it and have some success maybe you could let us (and me) know; should I jump into it I'll update anyone who seems interested.
