Best. Ask update. Ever. August 13, 2012 1:44 PM   Subscribe

What a difference a year makes.

August 2011, snow_mac posts about being socially awkward around women and looks for some dating tips and ideas.

August 2012, snow_mac updates, opening with "Advice to those reading (I'm now engaged)"

Congrats, snow_mac. I'm assuming all of us who answered get invited and the best answers are in the wedding party?

He got engaged six months after that question, wow! Congrats snow_mac!

See, if we had that three minute edit window you'd know he meant to say he was now enraged.

1. Don't be weird or crazy

I'm pretty sure that failing that piece of advice has lead directly to my long and happy marriage.

But, yeah - congrats!

Heh. We crack ourselves up, we do. She also had a cat on her, though I was catless at that moment. And is it terribly petty of me that I'm sad neither of us got a best answer checkmark? I love best answer checkmarks! And so does gingerbeer!

rtha, I would have thought that cats used laptops to look at pictures of hoominz.

Well, we call it The Eyrie. I can't say more.

Yorvit's favorite things to look at on the laptop are skateboarders and parkour-ers.

A little less than 6 months from "need advice on how to talk to women" to engagement.

Though I've certainly witnessed more than a few strong and satisfying relationships with a similarly short courtship; so let me add my voice to those wishing the couple health and happiness.

Here, Yorvit contemplates his favorite website.

And now I will stop hijacking the thread with cat photos.

I was confronted by three cats today. It was an alleyway near the river and one cat started to follow me and chirped friendfully, so I knelt down to pet him. Suddently two other cats appeared, mewing and shoving thier faces into my hand. I tried to do some kind of awkward three way scratches thing but it was too much, I couldn't take that much cat. I had to leave the purring trio, who quickly forgot about me and attached themselves to my SO who was following about six blocks behind me.

Cats man.

I married a teacher of young children and quoted Eureka's Castle at her to let her know that she'd be able to meet me for lunch. Not only did she get it, she thought it was funny.

I mean, really, normal people are boring.

Wait, rtha and gingerbeer are attached?

Well, damn! Now my interest in meeting each of them separately has somehow cubed itself if I could meet them both together.

Someday it will happen.

Until we're reassured that user snow_mac is on-board with this public advertisement/discussion of his impending nuptials, I'm a bit squicked by this whole thing.

Absent his/her expressed endorsement this entire conversation is a bit weird; and my earlier comments (which I regret in hindsight) don't help.

Do we know for sure that s/he wanted or would welcome this attention? Metafilter is a great and supportive community; but not all things that happen here were imagined/asked as though they would be one day be fodder for public discussion.

Shh, that's just a cover. We're not really talking about snow_mac, we're talking about CATS. But its seekrit.

Fuck cats. Make a thread about cats if you'd like to talk about cats.

MetaTalk circlejerk non sequitur obscurantism isn't nearly as precious as its practitioners seem to imagine.

An update at the end of a year-old AskMe thread doesn't get anywhere near the number of eyeballs that a MeTa thread does. And in all but the absolute rarest cases, updating a year old thread does not produce any additional discussion.
posted by jjjjjjjijjjjjjj at 7:15 AM on August 14, 2012

I get your note of caution, jjjjjjjijjjjjjj, but, honestly, we're a lot more concerned about the ramifications of a Metatalk pointing to an askme and saying LOOK HOW TERRIBLE THIS PERSON IS or LOOK AT THIS CRAZY SHIT than we are about one saying HEY LOOK A HAPPY NEWS UPDATE. The difference in relative chances of shitty drama in the former vs. latter case is pretty huge, which has pretty much been borne out here.

That said, dropping snow_mac a quick mefimail if you want to make sure he knows this is here is always a decent option.

And that's when the attack comes. Not from the front, but from the side, from the other two raptors cats you didn't even know were there. ... The point is… you are alive when they start to eat you...

Recent Activity, presumably. phearlez was one of the folks who answered the question.
posted by cortex (staff) at 2:03 PM on August 21, 2012

Yep, that's how. I saw it in my recents, was thrilled for him and thought it was a fun Ask success story.

I'm kinda gobsmacked by the suggestion that this might at all be unwelcome given that it's nothing more than a relaying of what snow_mac posted himself. I guess it's not a metatalk threat without some sturm und drang.
posted by phearlez at 4:17 PM on August 21, 2012

Yeah, but... I usually remove posts after about a week or so of no comments. Do people leave sometimes leave questions there for the full year they're open?
posted by Evilspork at 2:28 PM on August 22, 2012

Totally, yeah. I only remove threads I actively want to stop reading; threads that die down don't by definition clog up my RA. And late breaking updates are interesting!
posted by cortex (staff) at 2:41 PM on August 22, 2012

Oh look, there's a remove from activity option. Huh. I always just let time accomplish that for me.
posted by phearlez at 2:47 PM on August 22, 2012

Do people leave sometimes leave questions there for the full year they're open?

Sure, why not? If there's no activity in a thread, it doesn't pop back up to the top and I forget about it until/unless there's an update and it does pop back to the top.
posted by Lexica at 4:41 PM on August 22, 2012

Yeah, I just let time do it. Unless I'm intentionally trying to avoid a thread for some reason. (Usually either "I've added my $0.02 to answer it but am not interested in followup/digressions" (usually factual questions) or "I really need to take a break from this thread." (usually contentious threads where I'm frothing too much and need to chill))
posted by rmd1023 at 4:50 PM on August 22, 2012

Sorry, I don't mean to sound contentious or like I'm complaining, I'm just a curious neat freak.
