Look, you're really cute, but I can't understand what you're saying... March 28, 2013 11:17 AM   Subscribe

"Looks like you're searching for an exact phrase. The local search doesn't do that so well. Be sure to try your search for "_____" at Google if you don't find what you're looking for here." Perhaps it's just my colorblind eyes, but I can't see anything other than the "deep space nine" link in the notice above my search results. Is there any chance the Big Dark Bar of Highlighting could be changed to a different color so the text stands out more effectively? Thank you!

Are you using some sort of Greasemonkey scripts? Because I am using the simple style and that page shows up for me as black text on a light grey background. What's the link of the search results page so I can see if we're viewing the same thing?

I get this. But really, that results page should just be replaced with this.

Hi Jessamyn, yes. I'm using the mefiquote script. Will turn it off momentarily and let you know if that fixes things!

But first, this is the link: http://www.metafilter.com/contribute/activity/18312/search?q=%22deep+space+nine%22&sa=search+activity

I turned off greasemonkey completely, and the big dark bar is still there.

Using Firefox 19.0.2 in Mac OS X 10.6.8.

Ah I misunderstood what you were doing. So just to make sure I have it right... you get to this page by searching your own activity? Because when I do that, I get this page which looks different. Can you please let me know what page you are starting from to get there?

Ah forget it, now I see it. Yeah that just needs to get the right style applied to it. Thanks for the report.

Ah, thank you! (Glad to hear it's not just my eyes.)

zarq, when are you going to read the 293 memails I sent you??!?

Seriously, now I wonder how zarq has ever managed to respond to my MeMails.

I didn't realize one could search one's activity. Neat!

I don't think I've gotten 293 MeMails total.
posted by Rock Steady at 11:40 AM on March 28, 2013

I'm searching my own activity right now! So to speak.

Ack. Yeah, sorry. I'm very, very bad about responding to memails.
A bunch of those are "You posted X to Mefi" notices, tho. If I make say, 15 fpps a month, they add up quickly.

It's super helpful when you want to repeat something you've said in a previous thread without reinventing the wheel. Especially on AskMe, if you're responding to similar relationship questions. You can recycle/modify the wording of a previous comment to fit the current situation. :)

We should totally have a "Canned Response" option on AskMe.

Based on personal experience/my "friend"/a movie I saw once, it is my honest opinion that you should absolutely/never/never ever admit to snooping/adultery/that time you broke her favorite heirloom cup and blamed it on the cat.

I'm still not sure what this was about but I'm glad it worked out for everyone involved.

You should see one of mathowie's screenshots, or anyone else who forwards their memail to email.

I post a lot. And I hardly ever read or delete those "Your FPP has been posted to Metafilter" memails.

zarq: "I post a lot. And I hardly ever read or delete those "Your FPP has been posted to Metafilter" memails."

I haven't gotten one of those memails in a long time, and I post relatively often. I think I toggled a switch somewhere in my preferences.

i have like 490 memails, total. They add up quickly if you get into a couple of back and forth messages with people, plus all the IRL notifications.
posted by empath at 1:40 AM on March 29, 2013 [1 favorite]

Ah yes, here's that toggle switch.

Thanks! I actually like those notification memails, but it's good to know I can turn 'em off if I want to.

Now the problem has been solved, enjoy these absolutely astonishing etch-a-sketch drawings, linked on imgur. Holy moly, are they real?

I found another possible bug in search: https: and http: links are treated seperately, even if the rest of the address is the same.

Which search do you mean, the man of twists and turns? Do you mean the double-link checker on posting or the general site search?
posted by pb (staff) at 7:24 PM on March 31, 2013

the General search. I haven't tried an example against the double-link checker.
posted by the man of twists and turns at 7:53 PM on March 31, 2013

ok, yeah, we don't do any sort of separation at all in the general search. So it's up to users to do that bit of work if they're looking specifically for similar URLs rather than exact URLs. We don't know what the searcher's intent is there—maybe they're looking for https:// links for whatever reason.

The double-link checker is a bit different, because the entire purpose of that search is finding similar URLs, not necessarily exact matches. I'll double-check the double link checker this week and make sure that http and https are not treated separately.
