[RSS PSA] Reminder to update your MetaFilter RSS feeds
Last month, an apparent error in Feedburner caused several of MeFi's legacy RSS feeds to not update for up to a week (at least in my popular feed reader, Feedly). The problem has been fixed -- for now. But it's an important reminder that the Feedburner platform is increasingly unreliable -- if it were ever shut down by Google, the thousands of readers who rely on those feeds to keep up with the site may lose contact without even realizing it. The good news is that the site has a new set of self-hosted feeds that should remain active no matter what Google does. So, if you read the site using an RSS reader, please take a moment to update your reader to the new feeds -- and check the related posts on MetaFilter and Ask MetaFilter for a list of posts you might have missed during the outage.

AMP is not the Open Web
Does Metafilter have a policy about Google AMP urls in FPPs like this one? Might we consider stripping them out? Or do the benefits (mobile friendly speed, primarily) outweigh the possible costs (Google controls more of the web)
Known issue: logged-out search not working right now
Quick heads up since a number of folks have noted/asked about this: yes, the search function for logged-out readers is currently not working. It throws up a complaint that is unhelpful but also not dangerous: "Unauthorized access to internal API. Please refer to...". We'll have it fixed soon, but just a heads up that (a) it is indeed a thing and (b) it's not something to worry about. Sorry about the annoyance!

A little while ago Google introduced “featured snippets” that get listed at the top of a list of search results. (Their perils have already been discussed on the front page.)
Surprisingly, if you search for “cheevos” you’ll get a featured snippet clipped from a blog post by one of mefi’s own. I’m curious if anyone has seen other MetaFilter, AskMe or MetaFilter-adjacent content show up in a featured snippet.

I tried going back to one of my favorite MeFi posts. It was based around a usenet discussion (or collection of usenet discussions) made in real time about the new Star Wars film "Return of the Jedi" in 1983. Sadly, the main link is now dead. Anyone know where this stuff can be found now? It survived from 1983 until 2005, so hopefully it's still available somewhere.

What are your thoughts on AskMefi questions that can be easily Googled and/or are based on erroneous information? (I'm thinking specifically of this question, which contains both factually incorrect details and could easily be answered with Google. Has anyone noticed just how shit-high MetaFilter seems to be on Google's radar? On more than one occasion I've noticed seemingly innocuous phrases in a MeFi comment or thread end up as #1 on Google, even after their first index of the post.
