1. How about a standard notice when a comment is deleted from a thread? Replacing each deleted comment with "[comment deleted]" might make threads like this more understandable.
2) MeTa doesn't notice that I've set MeFi to open external links in a new window. External links don't always open from comment preview pages, either, which causes a tiny moment of angst when I double-check links before posting. Am I missing something?

Oops, I meant "External links don't always open in a new window from comment preview pages, either

I'm with you on both, media report. In MeTa I always have to remember to right click and "open in a new window". Not a huge pain in the ass, but enough to irritate me if I'm already in a bad mood.

[SHIFT] plus click does the same thing in IE (left shift key only for some reason). Thought I'd mention it.

Yeah, both work for me, too. But I think the moment of fear comes from all those posts I've lost accidentally at other sites. I usually copy the text of anything I'm about to post before actually doing it, but it doesn't always happen and I sometimes forget to right-click. If links from the comment preview page opened in a new window, too, I wouldn't have to worry. And yeah, preferring to keep a "base window" handy probably has something to do with unresolved childhood weaning issues.
