SWAP BATTLE!
Remember physical media? Remember how you can put music on it? Remember snail mail? Remember how you can sent physical media via snail mail?
No?
Well, let me remind you how it's done with the second round of the bi-annual MeFiSwap!

80 minutes - 700MB - 5 discs - 6 swappers

The constraints of MeFiSwap are perhaps old-fashioned. Trading music. Physical media. (Remember tapes? We're not that old-fashioned.) The post, ha! But the thrill of 5 mixes from 5 fellow MeFites is still just as good. It's in the appreciation of careful track order, the wonder at a beautiful package, and the thrill of envelopes addressed to you (or just your username ;) showing up in your mailbox. This is why we swap.

Ahem, so anyway, here's what's going on:

Basics

1. Sign up to swap! (see below)
2. Make a mix of music you'd like to share and burn 5 copies of it to CD-R.
3. Go to the post office and mail those mixes to your swapset.
4. Collect awesome mixes from your mailbox, and listen to them!

Guidelines (important)
  • You must be a MetaFilter member to participate.
  • If you sign up to participate in this swap (see below) you agree to participate in good faith and mail out 5 mix CDs to your swapmates by the mailing deadline.
  • If you have signed up to participate in a previous swap and then neglected to participate aside from collecting mixes from your swapmates, then you are not invited to participate again and go into the 'Damned Mooch' column of my list. Yes, I keep a list. And I check it all the damn time*.
  • Swapsets consist of 6 people (you + the five recipients of your mix).
  • We swap audio CD-Rs. As I've hinted, this is old-fashioned. The modern Internets have made sharing music with the people in your social circles very easy. Doing it with the post and physical media is not as easy. It costs a little bit of money. It takes some of your time. But this is how we do.
  • The swap is international. You will likely have to mail at least one of your mixes overseas. This comes with a financial burden, so please take that into consideration before you sign up (see below).
Deadlines
  • Sign-ups close hard and fast in about 2 weeks, on Sunday, August 18th. Please sign up by then (see below). Swapset assignments will go out shortly thereafter.
  • The mailing deadline is about 3 weeks after that, let's say Monday, September 9th.
FAQ

I am very happy with how much smaller this block of text is. I should rewrite more often. (Not taking my own advice this time, a huge percentage of what we're seeing today is cut'n'paste. I'm a slacker.) For lots of frequently asked questions and their oft-given answers, please see previous sign-up threads. You can get to them through my profile page.

So, you'd still like to sign up? OK! It's easy! See below:
1. Send me an email at my email address, please. Put 'MeFiSwap 2013-2' or 'Swap Battle 2013-2' somewhere in the subject line so I don't just spam-folder you like 99% of the rest of the email I get.
My email is in my profile, visible to members only. DO NOT MEMAIL, I will just write back saying that I asked nice the first time, in so many words.
2. Include in your email two pieces of information: One, your MetaFilter username. Two, your postal mailing address.
3. Start making your mix!

When you've signed-up properly (see above) you will receive an email in reply that says as much.

* If you participated in good faith in a previous swap and did not receive a mix from one of your swapmates, please email me at my email address and we can talk about it. The last swap had an incredible participation rate, to my knowledge. If you and I and maybe the other person involved can talk about it, suss things out, usually something good comes of it.**

** If you are the mooch who didn't mail out, please also email me. I can probably send you again the old swapset assignment email I sent during that swap, and you can get in touch with your neglected swapmates (to see if mailing addresses are still valid) and get mixes out to them. Late, sure, but the circle is complete. Once that happens, you are welcome to participate again.

OH also here's a story for you all: last year I mentioned to a guy I was seeing that I sometimes swapped mix CDs with people from the internet. His response? "Wow, I bet you hear a lot of bad music that way."

I'm not gonna say that's the reason we broke up, but it so perfectly encapsulated the irreconcilable differences between us that I still remember it.

I can't even think about getting started until next week, but I'm in. This is has become my must-do bi-yearly project, even if most of the time I have no idea how my mixes are being received. I'm never distributing to the same group twice, so I guess it doesn't matter!

Thinking of signing up, but I have a serious question; am I allowed to make actual tapes? Is that completely outside of the rules? I love making tapes, and am happy to receive them as well. Is that a possibility?
posted by Bohemia Mountain at 10:47 AM on August 6, 2013

I would be miffed if I received a cassette tape since I haven't owned anything on which a cassette tape could be played in ... I don't know, a decade? Maybe longer?
posted by komara at 10:49 AM on August 6, 2013

Bohemia Mountain, komara brings up the big logistical sticking point with cassettes.* I have the original radio for my truck sitting in a box way up in the top of my closet that plays cassettes.... when it's plugged into a vehicle, and that's it. No other devices can do the magnetic tape anymore. The other thing is that there's usually only one person who brings it up (and then maaaaaaybe one person cheering them on) and that's not enough to do a separate swapset.

I don't mean to discourage tape swapping, please feel free to make arrangements as you see fit, but I don't have the resources or inclination to facilitate it so you're on your own.

So. I hope swappers will be happy with a 'Jalliah's Teen Years' mix. I'm to old now to be embarrassed.

Also, thumb drives from unknown sources can compromise your computer's security. Don't accept thumb drives from strangers, you don't know where their computers have been!

I actually think that CDs are the most appropriate medium for this. The alternative is uploading files to one of those big online file hosts or a site like 8 Tracks. That can run into file format issues, uploads can get taken down, and some of us may be sharing stuff whose creators may not want it publicly exhibited online.

YES!

This legitimises my behaviour in so many ways.

1. I have been spending too much time reading the grey while waiting for the Mefiswap announcement, and here it is so VINDICATION!

2. I have just set about upgrading my stereo system, replacing my amplifier (bought around 1985) with one almost three times as powerful, looking for a CD player which can play CDs (which my current one doesn't seem to like doing any more) and fixing my speakers so that the new amp can be used.

3. Listening to loads of new music and loads of music from 1990, for SCIENCE! Mefiswap!

So to celebrate here is Atom™ Insulting the DJ, which is unlikely to make it onto the mix.

The format, as I understand it, is "must be playable on any old CD player, just like mix CDs of yore."

(I'm willing to be corrected by carsonb.)

Yep, you've gotta be able to put it in any CD player and have it work.

Also, I'm caught up on email again (after a day of rest) so if you think you're 'in' but haven't received an email from me that says "You're signed up to swap!" then you're not 'in' and you haven't been signed up to swap.

I was thinking I wouldn't do this but then I unearthed a stack of cassettes from high school including mix tapes from my friends and my high school girlfriend, my old Weird Al In 3D tape, some Dr. Demento dubs, and various teenage cortex songwriter demo tapes, and my wife borrowed a cassette deck from her mom so I could pull all this onto my computer through the sound card, and, well, basically I apologize in advance to my swapset but this shit just got real.

I've made my mixes. And also a possible different mix.

I had to buy CDs for this and the blank ones are just sitting there, asking for me to make different playlists in iTunes.

Also, iTunes gets super-judgmental after the sixth CD you burn.

Alright, I'm in. I do soundtracks to novels, and this time around I'm thinking of doing Dorothy Hughes's The Expendable Man, which lets me dig into some mid-60's Phoenix R&B, latin soul, gospel jazz etc. I'm feeling all irrationally optimistic about this one.

I've got my mix burnt but I am, of course, having last-minute second thoughts about how maybe I should switch out one of the songs for another one by the same band. I probably won't, since they're already burnt and all, but MAN it's eating at me.

I guess instead I'll just talk about it in my accompanying essay, which I'm about two-and-a-half pages into right now.

We are all writing essays, right?

What I find weird about these swaps, now that I've been doing them for a few years, is how quickly the mixes come together now. It's like this shapes my whole listening experience during the non-swap months. I'm thinking about tracks & how they could come together for a MeFi disc. I think it takes me longer to figure out the artwork now than it does to determine the general contours of the playlist.

In any case, I've got the thing put together now. I'm burning & printing, and am going to live with the thing for a few days during my commute. If I'm not tired of it by the end of the week, then it'll be good to go as soon as the groups are together. I'm cautiously optimistic that this will be a good one.

I'm fairly certain Weird Al's "Alternative Polka" is going to make it onto my actual mix of weird highschool-era cassette contents, but I was tempted for a moment to make a mix cd that was just all the songs featured in that medley, in order, preceded by the polka as a sort of overture for the whole thing, just as a kind of weird no-effort stunt.

One day left! If you were intending to sign up for this swap but haven't yet, NOW IS THE TIME.

As of right now there are roughly 135 swappers split up into 23 swapsets. A few people indicated they'd be willing to swap in two sets, if anyone else who is already signed up would like to do that go ahead and let me know.

There's a Canada-only swapset and one USA-only swapset, both by request. If either of those appeals to you especially, feel free to let me know.

The swapsets are mostly divvied up already, but there's the usual and inevitable post-sign-ups re-jiggering to be done so I expect assignments will go out at the very latest Thursday next week. I'm hoping for much sooner than that, but leaving myself some breathing room.

In case you were wondering, swapsets are filled as sign-ups are received, so it's semi- or mostly-random. The exceptions to that being all the Special Snowflake Requests.

How is your mix coming along?
posted by carsonb at 4:48 PM on August 17, 2013

Mine's all electronic music released in 2013 except not Daft Punk or Boards of Canada (I love them too, but y'all have heard them plenty already). Anyone who doesn't like music without guitars and people singing should probably special-snowflake-request not being in my swapset. I was having a hard time getting it down to < 74 minutes, but then I found out that Shapeshifter Blues already had been on a 2012 EP prior to this year's album.

So now I'm in the review phase where I listen to it through a few times, and fix up the transitions and stuff. I'm not completely decided on packaging - I have one photo that might work as cover art, but I also have other stupider ideas that of course I like a lot. We'll see.

Except I just bought a bunch more music today so that could still throw a monkey in the works.

I was going to do a clever mix with a particular theme and even managed to whittle it down to 18 songs that would fit on a CD (after much angst) but I think I have chucked it in favour of something really fun instead. This has been awesomely cool fun, thank you!

last time around I didn't get my mixes out until a day after the deadline, the packaging was horrible, there was no real theme (except awesome songs, but they didn't really flow), and they didn't have covers or a track listing.

this time around, I've got my mix ready and waiting, my covers are printed, and my theme is fantastic. I'm really excited!

posted by iamkimiam at 12:52 AM on August 27, 2013

Comic Sans? It's not too late to include an eight-page single-spaced, narrow-margined treatise on the deep and meaningful reasons why each song on my mix is there and what it means in the context of the mix, music as a whole, medieval migrations, the implicit nature of fame, and the notion of individuality in a society comprised exclusively of people who use mayo on the outside of their grilled cheese sandwiches instead of butter in your envelope. Also, there could be gratuitous references to Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Hello, fellow Busta Swaps member! I myself went looking for a .pdf, thinking that this is the kind of thing that requires physical dimension and so I'd need that kind of thing, you know? I downloaded CDF120 from that there linked list and dragged it into Photoshop and put stuff inside the borders. I printed it, cut just inside the lines, and it fit like a charm.

I don't know if LibreOffice will handle a .pdf like that but you should be able to find a free solution that will.
