Labor Day MetaTalk Queue August 28, 2013 1:36 PM   Subscribe

It's queue time again. We're going to queue MetaTalk posts this Friday through Tuesday so they can be posted when there are enough moderators around to keep an eye on them.

When the queue is on, posts to MetaTalk are sent to moderators instead of the site. This gives the mods on duty the chance to either work with the poster to resolve the issue via email or approve the post when enough folks are around to help out. Thanks!

We've just had the late August bank holiday here in the motherland. In addition, the Ashes have concluded, the nights are drawing in, an autumnal chill in the air initiates the wearing of a cardigan, and there's only 17 weeks till Christmas, 18 to the year 2014. So it feels like summer is done.

Wishing y'all over there in the US of A a most splendid Labor Day weekend.

Huh. I thought it was always on queue now.

We fairly recently added a clearer "hey, you really do know you can hit us up at the contact form if that's the more appropriate venue, riiiiight?" checkbox thing to the Metatalk posting form, that may be what you're thinking of it. Still just a suggestion/reminder at that point, though, vs. the queue we're using occasionally for holiday stuff.

Note: Everyone needs a hug.

Remember: you can't tell people to go fuck themselves, even in MetaTalk. Also, this will not be a proxy converstaion about (post|comment)

I think the best thing about (post|comment) is...

I had an experience with (post|comment) in 1998...

I like pancakes...

Lemon chiffon pie

1 ( 1/4 ounce) packet (about 1 1/2 teaspoons) unflavored gelatin
3 tablespoons water
4 eggs, separated and divided
1 cup sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
1/2 cup heavy cream, whipped
Baked pie crust

1. In a small bowl, drizzle the gelatin over the cold water to soak.

2. Meanwhile, in a medium metal bowl, whisk together the egg yolks with 1/2 cup sugar, the salt, lemon juice and lemon zest. Place the bowl over a larger pot of simmering water and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture is thickened to a custard-like consistency, about 8 minutes. Add the soaked gelatin and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and place the mixture over an ice bath, stirring just until cooled to room temperature. Remove from the ice bath and set aside.

3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, or in a large bowl using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until foamy. With the mixer running, drizzle the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar over the whites and continue beating until the whites form stiff peaks.

4. In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

5. Mix approximately one-fourth of the beaten egg whites into the cooled lemon mixture to lighten it. Fold in the remaining egg whites, followed by the stiffly whipped cream, taking care not to deflate the filling as it is combined.

6. Turn the filling into the baked pie crust and refrigerate at least 4 hours to allow the filling to set up.

OK. I'm good for the long weekend.

Just imagine that I made a horribly sexist comment in that mansplaining thread in which I also personally attacked another user, had it deleted, and then came here to complain about censorship. At first people try to patiently explain why my comment was offensive, but they become increasingly hostile because I only respond with faux-naive questions about basic principles of feminism. (I wouldn't actually do that, but my user name works well with the story.) You can make your MetaTalk fun! Some friends could join in and it would be a role-playing game.

Rest, laundry, dry cleaning, clothes shopping, cooking, taking solo time with my kids on Saturday and Sunday to give my wife a little bit of a break before I totally disappear into professional hell for 7 days. Wordshore: " As indicated by Matt in a tweet, which lead to this interesting Wikipedia entry on one aspect of blogging history."

Yeah, pb's pretty awesome. I'm stunned to see he doesn't have his own wikipedia page. pb was one of Blogger's original co-creators, for heaven's sake. (His mefi wiki page update is on my ever-lengthening to do list.)

Not only did pb invent the permalink, but he used to work at Pyra back in the late 90's. He helped create the original Pyra application, which was a neat idea that in some ways resembled the original ACT program, but online: a project manager and contact database manager as well as a to do list. IIRC, The app never got out of beta and was eventually repurposed into the software that ran Blogger. Blogger was one of the earliest services that allowed the public to run a blog without any real knowledge of how to code or run an in-depth website. When people talk about it, they usually say that the service "popularized blogging" but the truth is, the site basically took blogging mainstream to the masses. Before that, you could make a site using tripod or geocities or yahoo. But when Blogger and a few other tools came along they allowed for a more interactive experience.

He's written at least a couple of books, too. Including We Blog and Amazon Hacks.
