A fun little number and you should hear it December 22, 2013 2:59 AM   Subscribe

Listen, MetaFilter, 'tis the season and all that, so get yourself over to MetaFilter Music (you know, that subsite you never go to) and check out the absolutely wonderful little Hawaiian Christmas ditty that your fellow Mefier chococat posted, OK? It's called Mele Kalikimaka and it's big fun and just all kindsa damn good and full of holiday cheer and slippery guitars.

Seriously. You'll be singing "Mele Kalikimaka is a thing to say" while badly dancing the hula all day.
And this is a good thing.

Yay! Earworm, for sure; thanks for pointing it out, flapjax.

Now, do that Hawaiian yule classic that goes, "Away in a manger / no crib for His bed / The little Lord Jesus / lei down his sweet head"!

This is so delightful it slipped straight past my "bah humbug no damn Xmas music" shields and I found myself dancing in the living room with the cat. Thanks, chococat!

This is my wife's favourite Christmas song by a country mile. We've just been dancing around the kitchen to this. Thanks, chococat!

Whoah, thanks everybody. And thanks for the Meta, flapjax. Pretty cool to wake up to.
Ironically, I had a bit too much fun at a Christmas party last night and I'm feeling the exact opposite of that song right now. I think I'd actually threaten harm to someone if they put it on in my house.

chococat is fantastic. I also have another song of his on one of my MefiMu playlists and they are both heartily recommended!

Some of my very favorite Christmas songs are from MeFi Music. They are in frequent rotation on my holiday playlist and I love turning people onto them. Here are some picks:

ShH 408t: Bennington by The White Hat- Great recent addition!
O Holy Night - Chococat. A rustic and earnest version of an incredible song.
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Gallus. A "Sleepwalk"-style electric guitar update.
O Little Town of Bethlehem - Usonian. A warm happy banjo on one of the sweetest melodies ever made.
O Magnum Mysterium - Chara. Just hauntingly beautiful.
Christmas Rhapsody - Doubtfulpalace. Few parodies, of any kind, in any medium, are this perfect. This is one that people demand from me when they hear me play it.
Christmas Time for Boys and Girls - ludwig van. This is the one I expect to be the MeMu Holiday Challenge breakout hit. Just a beautiful song, a new classic as far as I'm concerned.
Huron Carol and Deck the Halls by antifreez_'s excellent brass band.

MetaTalk is where I learned how "Mele Kalikimaka" came to be, linguistically, so this feels rather fitting. And a lovely job on the song, chococat!
