I've had a bit of a difficult time over the last while, and I just wanted to say thanks to all you lovely MeFites for being there in one way or another.
I have asked a few questions through a sock puppet account and as well as the good advice I've received, which has helped me work through some things, I've really appreciated that people are there to say don't worry, you'll get through this, I've been there too etc. I've got help with more practical questions too. I've checked the site every day since I joined. Apart from eating, sleeping and breathing (mostly eating) I can't think of anything else I've done every day for that long. Every time I visit I find something interesting and I've learned a lot being here. It's been a welcome distraction when I've been too much in my own head. I've struck up at least one good friendship through MeMail that is important to me. And when things are dark it's good to remember that nothing is so bad that you can't laugh at pictures of cats.
So, to the mods who answer at least one of my inane questions on a weekly basis with ridiculous speed and good grace, to all the interesting people who post things that inform and amuse me, and to all the people who have personally helped me start to move forward feeling a bit more positive, thank you.

Yeah, I'm happy to hear that. And it's always pleasant to be reminded that there are actual humans on the other end of these screens.

I'm so glad you're feeling a bit better and that Metafilter has been helpful! It's also nice when it's confirmed that Metafilter means the same thing to other people that it does to me; I feel silly sometimes because hey, it's just a website, I don't even know most of these people or really anything about them but I still really, really value Metafilter as a community and it's been pretty important to me. It makes me feel really good when I know that it's important to other people, too.
Again, so so glad that things are looking up and that Metafilter was able to be helpful. Also, yeah, the mods are super patient as are a ton of users.

You, billiebee, wrote me a warm private message when I wrote that my dad had entered a rough patch during his heart surgery last month (which I mentioned late in some unrelated meta thread out of sheer frustration and despair). Most Favorite Other Mefite, you are the one who has done great things!
My dad sadly passed away this morning. I was planning to post my own thanks meta, but I now decide to hitchhike in this thread, to say how touching a bunch of unexpected extra favorites can be in dire times. In discussions about the function of favorites, we sometimes forget this effect. Thanks guys!

I've been online and active in forums since my late teens, and I often scoffed at the idea of an online 'community'.
Bunch of people interested in the same thing ? Yes. Community? Nope.
Then I watched in real time as some random dude tried to stop two girls getting caught in a potential human trafficking scenario on ask.metafilter, and I thought to myself "this place looks different. This place feels more than a collection of random people".
Come May 24th I will have had a paid account here for four years.
MeFi is a solid part of my life now.
Best online community *ever*.

My understanding, based on some small interactions, is that billiebee is an incredibly lovely person. So good on her, and my sincere condolences to Namlit also.

She is.
There are lots of awesome people who find their way to MetaFilter and enrich the community and I absolutely don't want to sound like I'm diminishing anyone else by singing billiebee's praises, but I think if you look at her participation here you'll agree that she's a real gem, a really fine addition to the community. If, as she says, MeFi has done a lot for her, I think it's the case that she's made a substantial positive contribution to MeFi in return. We're fortunate that she spends as much time with us as she does.

Namlit, I'm very sorry about your dad. You've been on my short list for a while of MeFites whose input I value on account of your being a musicologist and a generally excellent commenter, so you've been in my thoughts since your earlier comments. From that link it sounds like musical talent really runs in your family, so I hope that at least you find some joy in continuing that legacy.
I'm also glad that this site has been helping you through a rough patch billiebee! I agree with Ivan that you've been a thoughtful and humane presence here, so it's nice to know that you've gotten something out of being here too.
