2015 secret quonsar: sign ups are open! October 31, 2015 9:05 PM   Subscribe

It's secret quonsar time again! Participants will find out who they have drawn on Thursday, November 12, and the gift send by (or on) date is Tuesday, December 1*. Please sign up by 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, November 10. The spending guideline: $10-20.

secret quonsar (wiki) is the MeFi holiday-adjacent gift swap. Each participant sends a gift to an awesome Mefite; each participant receives a gift from an awesome Mefite. Awesomeness and gifts abound.

Signing Up
There will be a link at the end of this post. Follow it. We need an actual MeFi username, an email address you check, your name & mailing address, and some good guidance for the person who draws your name.

You will get a confirmation email within 36 hours of signing up that will show you the information you submitted. Please check your spam/junk mail folder. If you do not get this confirmation within 48 hours, send me a memail. If you have not gotten a confirmation email, you may not be signed up or you entered the wrong email address. We can fix that. Fun Fact: Every year, several people accidentally typo their own email addresses, which leads to confusion and consternation, and sometimes no gift for someone until late in the season.

You will get your draw via email. It will contain key information about the person you will be gifting: MeFi username, a real world name, mailing address, and hopefully helpful guidance from the person you drew. It should allow you get off to a running start.

If you are having trouble putting together your guidance section, ocherdraco put together a list of questions a few years ago to help you focus. You don't have to answer all (or any of) the questions, but this is a good place to start if you are stumped by the Guidance section.

We will not share, abuse, sell, or spindle your email address. The person who draws your name will not get your email address. We will delete all emails sent and received at the end of the sq season.

The Rules
If you failed to send your giftee a gift last year (without working it out with us), don't even bother signing up. You've been banned from this year's festivities. If you do try to sign up, your name will be yoinked from the swap. You can try again next year, but two strikes and you will be out. If you don't send a gift this year, you will be banned next year. You will get only one second chance. If you sign up anyway, you will be removed from the list and you will hear from me.

If you find that you can't participate after signing up but before the draw, after all, then send me a MeMail or an email to the address below. I'll remove your entry. If you find that you can't participate after all after the draw, please send an email to that same gmail account as soon as possible so we can contact the folks who drew you and whom you drew and redirect or reassign as appropriate.

If you do not think you can mail a gift in a reasonable amount of time, please do not participate. It's not OK to plan now on finding and sending your gift after your life calms down in January or late December or on Valentines Day.

Hey! You have a question!
We're happy to serve as anonymizing middlemen if you have a question for your recipient, to send messages to your recipient on your behalf, to find out if a package has been sent or has been received. Send us an email at our google address (see below), and we'll see what we can find out for you.

A Note About the Swap Groups
The list has changed slightly from last year. If we do not get enough people to do a swap in a group, I will contact folks in the underpopulated swap groups to see what can be done before the swap.

A Note about International Swapping
We STRONGLY recommend mailing as early as possible if you are going to send anything internationally, especially if the US is involved. Customs holds up lots of packages for varying amounts of time (with some, it seems forever.) If you sign up for the International/Anywhere option, please be aware that shipping times may stretch out longer than you'd prefer.

Signing up for the international swap does not guarantee that you will get a gift from and/or will send a gift to someone outside of the country in which you live (particularly if you live in the USA).

Communicating with us
Unless you need to contact us specifically about one of the organizers, please use our gmail account secretquonsarswap. This will help us make sure we don't overlook anything and can be as efficient as possible.

Who we are
This year, the quonczars are arcticseal, phunniemee, and me. If you drew one of our names and need to contact us anonymously, contact one of the other quonczars to get your answers.

*Send Date
We have set the send by date to be Tuesday, December 1. Because this comes at the end of a high-travellin' shopping-friendly holiday weekend in the U.S., we understand that some folks may need an extra day to get that package out. We do expect folks to have their gifts in the mail or on their way to the post office at the very beginning of December. This is not a free pass to mailing it out the next weekend.

Opera Users
For some reason, many versions of Opera are still not handling the form correctly; if you can't use another browser, email or memail us.

I know international mostly means "to and from the US" but it would be nice if there were a non-negligible chance of someone from not-US sending or receiving not-US.

Yeah, the International swap option isn't perfect. Because the MeFi population overall is so US-heavy, it follows that the folks who want to ship internationally group is also US-heavy, and everyone wants to send and receive gifts from our MeFites in any one of 14 other countries (and counting!). There's no real good way to put my thumb on the randomization to make everyone happy. Which is why the randomization is - well - random.

In slightly brighter news, the region choices this year seem to indicate more (US of) Americans are choosing USA Only than in the past, including names I recognize as having gone international in the past. So maybe the chances are slightly better of drawing someone in a country pleasing to folks? (I make no promises, especially based on trends compiled from 38 hours of data )

RedOrGreen, I've added your name to the Second Chancers list. Thank you!

For newbies, a Second Chancer is a super awesome MeFite who volunteers to send out a second gift to someone whose gift never arrived, was stolen, trampled by postal camels, or is otherwise lost. We'll send out an email in mid-late December to make sure folks still can and want to be a second chancer. We usually have more second chancers than folks who need a second chancer, but it's wonderful to have lots of options so we can optimize the second chancing.

So what's the deal with Second Chancers? Is there usually a big need for them?

People volunteer to be on standby to send out an awesome gift to replace one that never arrived. We use anywhere for 6 to 15 second chancers a year (the number has been going down over time) out of a pool that usually ranges from 12 to 24 people. We usually have a good distribution of folks across swap groups or countries, which means we can reassign quonsees smartly. Second Chance volunteers are pretty awesome.

Also, I might be persuaded to come in as an international giver if there's a big shortage there. Is that usually the weak spot?

Actually, the International giver group is usually pretty big. This year, it looks to be the second biggest group, in fact, behind USA Only.

I don't know of anyone who has done this (either for FedEx or UPS), but they may not have put down FedEx as part of the address. If you do this, I'd ask that you call the Fedex place and find out how it works, and then be detailed in your guidance section about what can and can't be sent there. I'm assuming they wouldn't accept mail on your behalf by anything but FedEx, for example, but if I'm wrong, then please please put that down.

You might want to consider USPS General Delivery instead (i.e. it gets held at the local main post office for you) as an option that offers more affordable options for your sender.

Either way, FedEx or USPS will require you to provide a full real name (Joe Smith, not Joe S. or Your Mefi Handle) and a legal ID that matches it to pick up your package.

Anyone who didn't get specific is going to get seriously random stuff from me. I suppose if you're into that it's cool...

Speaking only for myself, that's exactly what I want. I feel like there's this thing that happens where people don't believe us vague folk that we really mean "any package in the mail will make me happy" when we say some variation of that. I understand that people want to pick out The Perfect Gift, I do too, but for me (and I assume others) The Perfect Gift is simply getting something unexpected. I hope that doesn't stress anyone out, but that really is how I want to be quonsed.

I mean, I've done this about four years, including this one, and have had fun picking out gifts for people with a list of specific kinds of things they're looking for, and for a person with pretty vague guidance. I've gotten nothing but gracious thanks for every gift I've given. Maybe people were disappointed, but I'm going to take them at their word that they enjoyed what I gave them. Likewise every gift I've ever gotten has been or is still is being enjoyed, all of them are things I would have never thought to ask for for myself.

I just ask that everyone please have a little patience with people who have a different style of filling out the guidance section from what you'd prefer. Writing a novel is great, and I've liked that insight into that person's taste when I've gotten it. I've also enjoyed the fun of hunting for a good random gift when I haven't. I just hope that no matter how brief or how long the guidance from a person is, we can trust them to know what kind of gifts they'd be happy to get.

Yeah, I got vague this year. In the past I put specific suggestions and I felt like people took the suggestions too literally. I kind of felt like maybe I stressed them out by listing specific things. I enjoyed the gifts, don't get me wrong, but I felt this year I'd just put "go nuts" and see what happened.

As Gygesringtone said, just receiving a package in the mail is the fun part.
posted by bondcliff at 6:54 AM on November 9, 2015 [1 favorite]

On the subject of random crap vs. specific list, this highly relevant Daily Stat from the Harvard Business Review came through my inbox the other day.

To Choose the Perfect Gift, Think More About Yourself than the Recipient

In an experiment, people had greater appreciation for the gift of a mug emblazoned with an image from the Louvre museum in Paris if they were informed that the giver was passionate about France, as opposed to England (5.83 versus 5.27 on a 1-to-7 appreciation scale). Four such studies demonstrate that recipients appreciate a gift more when it refers in some way to the giver's core characteristics, says a team led by Gabriele Paolacci of Erasmus University in the Netherlands. Thus you might have better luck selecting the “perfect gift” if you focus on your own, rather than the recipient’s, interests, the researchers suggest. (Source)

Some of us REALLY DO MEAN IT when we say we'll be happy with whatever. The first year I participated in SQ I got an amazing little thing that my SQ had made because that's what he was into at the time. I love these little windows into other people's lives - it's what makes SQ special to me.

In anticipation of receiving my first ever SQ assignment (yes, I am totally imagining myself as a Top Secret Cheer and Delight Agent), I'm wondering: Do any veteran QuonsStars have advice/hints/tips for doing Certified Awesome Perfect Gifts within the price range?? So many of people's favourite Quonsmas prezzies seem to have been handmade treasures, but I'm unfortunately the least crafty/capable person on the planet (which is why I have undying admiration for people who can create stuff with their own hands), and the only thing I know how to "make" is contemporary dance or academic writing (which does not ship well, and is not delightful, respectively), so I'm envisioning doing my Qonsar Elfing at Ye Olde Marketplace/Shopping Mall. I'm worried that the amount of delight I can purchase for $20 will be disappointing...and the non-handemadeness of it will reveal me to be a Quonsmas Imposter, who failed to adequately imbue the essence of my very soul into the gift I send.

Do any veteran QuonsStars have advice/hints/tips for doing Certified Awesome Perfect Gifts within the price range??

It's tough to say because not everyone has the same tastes. What might be loved by someone might just be "meh" for someone else.

First off, comb their Metafilter history, especially AskMe. You can often get an idea of someone's interests and hobbies.

Secondly, this is a gift exchange between internet strangers. Nobody is expecting an iPad or a personalized autographed picture of Donny Most. Expectations should be pretty low. Most people are happy with anything. It's really about the community building than anything else.

Other ideas:

Some treat unique to the area you live.

Some kind of physical representation of their username or number.

Remember there are a bunch of Metafilter people with Etsy shops or other stores. I think there's a collection of them somewhere. You don't have to make something yourself but it's a treat to receive something that was made by another MeFite. In that case you're connecting three people so it's an even stronger sense of community being built.

And for god's sake, when you receive something from somebody, acknowledge it somehow. Even if they don't out themselves with the gift there's usually a "thank you" thread.

Forgive me, for I was overcome with enthusiasm. To imply that the Quonsmas Elves had erred is serious enough, but to be mistaken about it in a way that impugns them is….beneath them. Looks like I just earned a piece of Etrigan's coal.

I am really hoping maxwelton gets me, if there are special pacific northwest slugs in the bargain. We have slugs that somehow make their way into our house each year, and I actually looked up "what do slugs eat?" once and briefly considered keeping it as a pet instead of putting it back outside. however, the odds are not good that I would be able to safely shepherd them through the winter.. if my plants are any indicator!

I recommend that if you can't figure out the one big $20 item that will be the perfect quonse that you send a mini collection of smaller items, hopefully they will like some of it. I also think that it's hard to overdo it on the wrapping of the things, because you will see photos of these adorably wrapped and ribboned quonses, and you may think to yourself why didn't I gift wrap my box, I am the worst quonsar.

The Swap Notifications are currently being sent out, one by one, region by region.

The Hamsters of Randomization are sprawled out on the couch, loudly demanding nuts of all ilks.

If you discover something wonky about your draw (I think I caught the only time the Hamsters tried to assign someone to themselves), please let us know ASAP. I'm talking region oddity (being X Only and getting someone from Y, for example), blank notifications, et cetera.

This is a side effect of having to use the PRE tag to format the message to make the entire message readable in the mail merge program we use to populate the emails; it is also #3 on my new list of THINGS TO FIX FOR NEXT YEAR.

For the record, it goes:

#1. Do Better at Detecting When People Draw Themselves.
#2. Do Better at Detecting Accidental Duplicate Signups
#3. Find a better formatting mechanism for the Emails that is readable.

My quonsee lives in a place that's native to yellow-bellied marmots! Oh, but how to catch one?

So, there's this great fishing spot on Mt. Evans right below the summit, the lower of the two Chicago Lakes. You could conceivable get there from the parking in the summit, and hiking down but there's a scramble involved, so the best route is a few hour hike up.

Anyway, I was fishing at that particular alpine lake and had taken off my hiking pack and left it a little ways off from where I was fishing. Along comes this marmot, and it keeps watching me, and then inching closer to my pack (which had the food I had brought). So there I am, fly rod in hand, without a good place to set it, and it the thing is right next to my pack, about to score itself some free lunch. The only thing I had handy that I was wiling to throw was my bright orange bic lighter. So I chucked it at the ground nearby marmot, hoping to scare it off. I guess it thought I was tossing it food, because the critter proceeded to grab it, run up to the top of a rock a little further off, and try to take a bite. It threw the lighter to the ground and chirped at my angrily for several seconds before running off.

Have you tried an orange bic lighter?

And our interactions with you folks are awesome, even if I've done something boneheaded like assigning you to yourself (on the plus side, you did draw someone super-awesome)! Whether it's offering to be part of another swap group if it will help us, figuring out what to do with a "Go Nuts!" guidance, responding to our anonymized email with useful information, or letting us know you have to back out of the swap as soon as you find out, quonsing folks are awesome.

And now that we've gotten over this year's speed bump, fingers crossed for smooth sailing, happy customs officers, well-maintained delivery vehicles, and lots and lots of good gift ideas we can totally steal and look like excellent present-givers to non-MeFi family and friends.

Now are that the swap is solid, let’s look at some swap-related numbers!

437 people are in this year’s secret quonsar swap.
221 people (~51%) signed up for USA Only group, making it the largest group this year.
17 countries are represented (at least 3 are new this year)
6 Canadian provinces are represented.
41 US States and the District of Columbia are represented.
4 Australian States and the ACT are represented.

42 is also the number of times the phrase “Go Nuts” appears in the guidance sections.
4.5 answers are just “go nuts”. (One has a little padding but is basically “go nuts”)
3:1 is the ratio of guidance sections that mention cats vs. those who mention dogs (some mention both!)
27 people say they are vegetarians
7 people say they are vegan.
5 guidance sections mention Cider.
3 guidance sections mention Dr. Who.

5 guidance sections mention Cider.

I read that as "Cher." Cider's good, though, too. I guess.

Numbers, delicious! Thank you, julen.

I'd enjoy more data posts. At the moment, I'm wondering:

Which U.S. states are not represented?
Which countries are?

How many participants are longest-term participants? How many have participated ever year?

Is there an annual compilation of quonsars' questions sent to quonsees?

An anonymous blog of people's guidances to quonsars would be fun to read!

Sadly, I can't answer most of those questions, either for privacy reasons (individual entries) and/or because we don't keep track of participants/their information from year to year, so I can't provide any sort of historical numbers. (We delete all emails, spreadsheets, etc. at the end of the season.)

It turns out, I was wrong, though, in some of those statistics.

42 (not 41) US States are represented. I believe the missing ones are:
Both Dakotas, Wyoming, Nevada, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Alabama, and Oklahoma. Speak up if I missed your state (as seen in your mailing address) and you are represented!

The 19 (in a classic American move, I forgot to count the U.S.A in the country-count when compiling stats, and then I forgot to count Canada, too, again in a classic US of American move) countries represented are:
Australia, France, Germany, Austria, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Denmark, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Israel, Finland, Norway, Canada, the U.S, and I counted Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland as individual entities.

The Cookie Swap has arrived. Some of you might want to mosey on over to that thread.

Package sent to my quonsee on Friday, November 20th. And I got an amazing Quonsee.

My quonsee seems pretty awesome, and so I got my quonsmas shopping done early. He should have his gifts before Thanksgiving, and I hope he will like them. I wasn't 100% sure about either item, so I hedged with two. Merry happy to all!

Oh! I've done every year since 2008, except one. I missed 2010.

For the numbers, julen - though my address is listed as the United Kingdom it will actually be sent to me in Turkey, so you can add that as an additional receiving country. However just to complicate matters I didn't send my outgoing gift from Turkey, so do I add two new countries or do they cancel each other out????

Oh, they both count! (Especially if I change the label of that category to "Countries packages sent to or received from"!)

Help me remember: when we send out our gifts, are we to remain totally anonymous? So "from the Internet" and not "from cubby?"
posted by cubby at 1:07 PM on November 23, 2015

You do whatever feels comfortable. Some people are totally anonymous, some people ask the Quansee not to reveal who they are, some people use their MeFi name and keep the other details anonymous, it's all okay! (I think most people reveal at least their user name?)

Room 641-A is right!

The sender can totally choose their level of openess/anonymity. We have people who choose every point along the continuum, and it's all good whether you reveal everything, nothing, just your handle, just your real-life first name, or a nom de plume that is totally unrelated to your MeFi Handle (e.g. your thank you notes have the engraving of Ethelbert Park, the Masked Raccoon of Saskatchewan at the top.). Just go with what you feel comfortable with.

Too-Ticky: In time for what?

In time for the present-opening occasion of the quonsee's choice that would maximise enjoyment.

I am a terrible SQ'er because I only just now did my research on my quonsar. Once again, I wanted to favorite almost everything I read, which bodes very well. I was daunted by one of their requests, but another doesn't seem as daunting and since they specified that they're okay with handcrafted stuff. And the "easy buy" is a very easy buy because it involves going to a store I like that I was going to visit anyway today. Yes, I'm going out on Black Friday. The things I do for SQ...

I'm with you this year. I'll get the stuff sent out on Monday, but just barely. On the other hand, we're still obeying the rules, and there's no wrong way to Quans that doesn't involve shipping live primates in the mail. I think of it this way, we're just lengthening the Quansmas season.

Damn. I was on track for mailing out tomorrow but one thing didn't turn out as well as I wanted in my Quonsmas workshop so I have to re-do it tomorrow and alas I will be one day late.
