Must the memory of the dream of Ur fade from the minds of mefites? December 18, 2015 12:57 PM   Subscribe

On December 15, pb retired a number of Social Apps that had zero users or no longer existed from profile pages- including the one for Glitch, the weird cult non-game that eventually became a glorified IRC Client unicorn. However, all of the old user pages for the game's players continue to live on at glitch.com. Couldn't we keep the memory of our participation in this weird little thing that once existed around for posterity? (Or maybe let people know when social apps are going to be cleared from their profiles?)

Sure, I can put Glitch back. The few user pages I spot-checked were coming up as a 404 for me. But if they're still active that's fine.

It's back. And you can find more MeFites with Glitch profiles at the Social Explorer.

(can I use this to ask if adding Behance is possible/useful?)

Sure, if you have a social service you'd like to see on profile pages you can add it to the wiki here. It just needs to be a site that mefites can join and it needs to have public profile pages of some kind.

Wow, MySpace is retired! How the mighty have fallen.

pb: Sure, I can put Glitch back.

Man that made me really happy for a second even though I knew it was just about the profile field

No, people grew out of that whole thing.

Can you add MeFi to the list? It's my favorite site and I think a lot of people here might be on it too.

I think you meant "glorious".

I'd recommend updating the profile links to userscripts.org to point to userscripts-mirror.org, for those folks who never migrated their scripts to Greasy Fork.

God, looking at people's profiles and seeing "a long time ago" as the time on any and all news updates has made me much sadder than it should have.

Myspace was pretty great for making your profile completely gothic and unreadable via html mangling, as well as forcing anyone who looked at your profile to experience your horrible taste in music via autoplay.

I propose we implement that here, in memory of everyone's friend, Tom.

Aw, I put my Glitch profile in, even though I joined late and didn't get to play much before it disappeared :(

This thread has made me really miss Glitch again. If only there was a similar game! Alas...

I'll always have all those butterflies I renamed "Bumblescrump", the pigs I renamed "Crimpshrine", and the chickens I named "Isocracy".

So glad that so many others still miss it and hope it'll come back somehow someday.

Meanwhile that hole in my heart is being filled by Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Flutter Butterfly Sanctuary.

One of my quiet hopes for things that will never realistically happen is that Slack ends up getting big enough and profitable enough for them to bring back Glitch in an official returned form (since they're made by the same developers). Get on it, mathowie!

More likely is that they'll bring it back for April Fool’s day one year, like Flickr did with Game Neverending. (Poor Stewart Butterfield. All he wants to do is make quirky games, all he can do is make productivity tools.)
