It's that time of year again, where people submit themselves to the unhinged whims of a celebrity puppetmaster in the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen (5-11 August 2017). Mefite-heavy team StrangeFascination (previously, previouslier) have 5 open spots - would any Mefites like to join us for zany art timez?

I've always wanted to participate but I can't make the commitment. I'm sad this is the last one but I'll be rooting for the home team!

We operate on a 'do what you can' philosophy.

Even if you can only do a couple of things over the weekend or in the evenings, that's OK. Like, we're all going to work and stuff while it's on.

This is not the last GISHWHES. It's not allowed to end until I actually have the time to participate.

I'd love to join the team and "do what I can" for it, but I'd be taking up a slot that I'm sure could go to someone who has a better chance of making a meaningful contribution rather than a token effort.

hippybear, "do what you can" is good enough. Really. If the slots don't get filled, we get random people assigned to us (and sometimes that's not so great), and we made a team-wide decision to invite more MeFites. Your contribution will be meaningful, because you're you, and you're meaningful. It's low key, we're not in it to win it (that's actually an option), but to have fun. And we do. Even if you only do one thing, which you won't, because some of the team challenges are as easy as taking a selfie, it'll be worth it.

Fun fact! Three years ago, the GISHWHES list came out while I was in a town 90 miles away waiting to see if I could adopt my dog. One of the items involved putting up a flyer and getting a dog adopted. While I was waiting to take my pupper home, I made flyers for her and stapled them on all the telephone poles in my neighborhood, and then I got a dog! And GISHWHES points!

So... Zelda pup says you should do it.

My team from a few years ago has fallen apart, and I've been on the fence about playing this year- but if there's a Mefi team, I'm in.

If you're on the fence, do the thing. You can get people to do utterly ridiculous things if you tell them it's for a scavenger hunt.

So, can people who aren't a part of the team participate in making a team member's contribution to the cause? If so, that might be a thing that would get me to sign up.

Absolutely! For some items, it's basically required that you recruit help (like, have five people dressed as Stormtroopers sing the national anthem of your country while showing off their best boy band moves... not an actual item, that I know of...) but yes, getting your friends, family, and random strangers involved is part of the fun.

You can totally do this. My long suffering girlfriend and friends have been dragooned in several silly things.
