I'm playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game was just released and it's available on the Nintendo Switch. It seems like everyone is playing these days. Let's talk about our islands/towns. What fruit did you end up getting? There are five possibilities (not counting coconuts): apples, cherries, peaches, pears, and oranges. If you're up for it, let's share our Nintendo Switch Friend codes so we can visit each other's islands/towns. This is a super chill game and it makes me happy. If you have the opportunity, consider picking it up. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Happy crafting, farming, shopping, & exploring friendos.

I have cherries in my town. Why do I always eat the stems? That can't taste good...
And I managed to do things that triggered Blathers moving to town and I'm hoping he gets here soon.

My friend code is SW-6706-2379-3883 . I'm excited about my island, but hoping for a pole to jump with soon so I can clear all those weeds on the other side of the river. Also a shovel, because the squirting clams and the glowing light peaking out of the ground are both very alluring.

I'm already fucking with the Switch internal date/time so that I can just speed up my town/island's progress. It's the only thing this game lacks and maybe it's because I'm so used to just "going to bed" in Stardew Valley and forcing that day/night cycle to reset.

Maybe Nintendo wants this to be a bit more of a meditative experience, and this is why it is synced in real-time. But the early game is very slow with your toolset and what you can and cannot do, so I feel like it's a bit of a misstep.

I am semi-new to this game after spending the last year being a Stardew Valley fanatic, and find this to be a really relaxing, satisfying alternative. I got pears, which are not my favorite, but I did find an amazing Imperial Bed (and matching Imperial Lantern) just by shaking a tree. So I can't be too displeased with my trees.

Shake your trees!!!

I've never played an Animal Crossing game before, but the ad said "escape to a tropical island", and I was like "sold." I've got pairs.

I'm bad at fishing. That's been a constant in my entire gaming life: if there's fishing in a game, I'm bad at it.

I'm Jo and I have oranges and my friend code is SW-2675-0293-8026. I just want to be sure about etiquette for visiting! If I visit you, do the things I do on your island affect your game? Like, obviously, I just want to come and take your iron, but I'm not going to do that if that would mean that you would have no iron. But I assume that taking a piece of fruit is ok with most people.

I started with an island I was unhappy with so made a dark deal with Nook yesterday and erased the whole thing to start fresh. And I'm so glad I did! I got pears, THE MOST ELEGANT OF FRUITS (pear haters to the left), and named my island Moonglow, which is a variety of pear and probably accurate to me since I'm basically nocturnal. Thank goodness for this game. I'm so stressed and lonely right now. It's good to have something gentle and sweet to occupy my mind with.

I have oranges and some coconuts. If anybody wants to set up a trade, let me know. I'm looking for pears. If you need oranges and can't trade anything, that's ok too. You can come over and visit as well, but please don't run through my flowers. SW-7139-5609-8878

I can also make and give a ladder to anyone in need, which you need to get on top of the cliffs.

The /r/ACTrade subreddit has a really nice Discord going. There aren't a lot of people, but it's well moderated and everyone so far has been very nice.

Okay, so you can only visit an island if you're both playing at the same time and the other person has opened for visitors at the airport. So you can actually ask if it's okay to take things. (And yes, taking things mean they aren't on that island anymore.) It is unfortunately arduous to type messages; I'm slowly picking out things like "cherries 4 u". So sorry if I seem abrupt. Even my phone these days is way easier to write on (I write most of my comments from it with no real difficulty).

I have picked all my cherries, but will put some more out by the airport next time I'm playing. Maybe set up a little thrift store with furniture and clothing I don't want. I'm trying to figure out if there's something else to do on this island exchange.

The following is accepted among the AC community as how to behave politely when visiting someone:

When visiting a person you're trading with:
- Wait for them on the grass as soon as you exit the airport. You exchange items there.
- Do not touch walk around or touch anything. Say thanks when the trade is done and leave.
- However, you can always ask if it's OK if you visit the person's store, or walk around, whatever. Always ask before you do something.

When visiting a friend:
- Do not run through flowers. Running ruins flowers.
- If the host has paths on their island, stay on the paths.
- If the person has a lot of fancy flowers and flower beds, stay away from them. People can get very nervous about their flowers, because it can take ages to get special hybrid flower colours.
- Ask before shaking trees.
- Ask before you pick flowers.
- Ask before you pick weeds. Some people like the weeds or are saving them.
- Ask before you buy anything on display on the counters at the store (it disappears for everyone).
- Ask before you take fruit.
- Do not take any items left out on the ground unless you've been told it's OK.
- Ask the host before you dig up or chop or hit anything.
- Sometimes people leave instructions or greetings to visitors on their bulletin board.
- It's OK to leave nice messages on someone's bulletin board.
- It's OK to catch bugs and fish, visit the museum and other buildings, and talk to the villagers.

But i’m still only on day 3 and can’t find enough god damned iron nuggets as i destroyed my rocks not knowing that was bad.

I’m also so happy to have the distraction to be honest. Now that i realize there’s other Mefites about i might have to play online as well!

Question: is anyone else finding that when they visit islands using their Nook Air Miles, they aren't running into much variety as far as vegetation? I live on an island with Pear Trees, and every island I visit is also a Pear Tree island. I have probably visited 14 or 15 of these islands now. But apparently it's possible to land on islands with different trees (e.g. peaches) and dig them up to replant on your own island.

I just want some peach trees 🍑😭

If you have your airport open to visitors, I might just drop by with a few fruit. (If you're not aware, you can dig a hole and plant a fruit to grow a fruit tree. Non-native fruit are worth more on your island than your native fruit.)

Nightrecordings, I actually just now got my first Nook Miles island visit with non-native fruit. Probably took me 15-20 tries.

On most of the tour islands I've realized that there is usually one furniture and one wasp nest in the trees, and 4 rocks. Sometimes there's a message in a bottle or a fossil, too. So at least I can get that stuff if I land on a regular island.

My switch friend code is SW-6223-9179-9022, my account is Emily, my AC character is Duien, and my island is called Ix (guessing I'm not the only Glitch player overlap here in the the AC thread). I've been doing some time traveling, so my island is pretty developed. Peaches are the native fruit.

I'm not sure how often I'll have my gate open, but feel free to stop by any time that it is! I'm planning to set up a little flea market area near the airport of items that are free for folks to pick up, and will make sure to put up a sign so it's obvious. I'd love it if you talk to my villagers when you visit — they remember visitors, and will chat about them later, which is delightful. If there're at home, it's a great idea to pop in to visit, as they might give you a free blueprint!

If you see stuff you like in my house or around the island, let me know and I might be able to send a copy to you! Most unlocked items can be ordered again and sent as gifts, so I'm happy to share. If it's something particularly expensive, I might as for a few bells or fruits in exchange, but most things I'm happy to send along for free.

I also wanted to note a new differences with New Horizons from previous titles that make a lot of the AC visiting etiquette much easier:
  • In this version, walking/running on grass doesn't cause it to degrade into mud, so staying on paths is much less important.
  • Flowers are much heartier than they've been previously. If you run over a flower, its petals might pop off, but it doesn't kill the flower, so you can't accidentally destroy someone's hard-won hybrids.
  • There's a lot more shopping that can be done safely in someone else's town. The only things that sell out after purchase are the two items on the back wall of Nook's Cranny. The items in the cabinet or on the front stands there can be bought multiple times, as well as anything from Able Sisters or visiting merchants.
  • There's also some differences between "friend" and "best friend" in terms of what the game will allow you to do when you visit. Only someone you've marked as a best friend in game will be able to do any sort of long-term harm to trees or flowers. I'm not sure about all the details on those restrictions, as I haven't done much experimentation yet, but I know that a regular friend I invited over was not able to dig up flowers, and can't chop down trees.
Look forward to seeing you all on this delightful, silly, island full of animals!

Another handy tip to note: if you install the Switch Online app on your real-world smartphone, you can use that to type in-game chat messages instead of the painful on-screen keyboard. It works for regular local chat and for best-friend messages. That's also where you can do voice chat, if that's a thing you're into.

Can I just say how much I love the museum? It's just so peaceful and quiet and all the creatures you've donated are so beautifully drawn and animated in their perfect little museum habitats. I also love how the educational evolutionary timelines that go through the fossil section end in outlines of all the different kinds of animals in animal crossing. It's just a nice little piece of world building.

cilantro I agree completely. The museum was always my favorite part in New Leaf and the biggest thing missing for me in Pocket Camp. This new museum is just breathtaking! The evolutionary fossils are maybe my favorite touch in the whole game so far, but my favorite room is the freshwater fish room. So beautifully calming. The music is just perfectly peaceful and the textures are lovely. I generally really dislike fishing in all videogames but the loveliness of the aquarium actively motivates me to fill it with fish.

Thanks, duien! I wanted to test it, but didn't want to just show up on someone's island and tell them that I was going to try to take their stuff, but wasn't really!

I waited all through 2 weeks of quarantine hell, wishing that some mysterious benefactor would gift me with a Switch just for this game. I was so SO lonely and I wasn't legally allowed to even get out of my house and everyone I knew was playing this game and I just wanted friends!!

Quarantine ended and I became my own mysterious benefactor (I got a Switch Lite and am doing it on a payment plan, though I've also already spent hundreds on games and a second hand 3DS so y'know I'm not the most fiscally sensible person). I'm on my second day, it's pretty cute, took me a while to figure out how travel worked, but FRIIIIEEEENNNDDDSSSS

Hey, divabat, just in case you don't know, you can maximize your rock-bashing yield to collect iron (and other stuff like stupid eggs) faster.

You need all eight spaces around your rock clear, as follows (O is rock, Xs are spaces):
XXX
XOX
XXX

Then you need to dig a hole to the top and to the side of one corner (postion 1 and 2, so in this bad diagram the space immediately above and the space immediately to the right of S):
__1
XXS2
XOX
XXX

Then you can stand at position S, face the rock diagonally and repeatedly and quickly press A to extract 8 things from the rock. It prevents you from being knocked away from the rock and slowing down your rock-beating progress.

Who ever figured that out and how did they do it? Humans are amazing.
posted by bleep at 9:54 AM on April 3, 2020

A further optimization of that rock strategy: for the rocks on your home island, you can build fences at points 1 and 2 instead of digging holes. Then you can leave them there to have your rocks pre-optimized for your daily visit, without leaving ugly holes in the ground.

And divabat (or any other southern hemisphere folks), if you ever see Ix open to visitors or send me a MeMail when I'm online playing, I will happily trade you a big pile of iron for some of your precious flowers. As far as I can tell, available flower seeds are seasonal, so there's no way right now for northern hemisphere folks to get roses, lilies, or cosmos other than trading.

Oh, cool. Thanks for the fence idea, duien!

(Although I have been digging my holes every day, so I could keep track of the rocks I'd bashed, and then filling them in when I was done.)

Ooooh, I've been wondering about the flowers! I'm in the northern hemisphere and have cosmos as my native flower on Crone Isle, but I haven't found any lily or rose seeds. I'll try to travel with cosmos seeds on me, and we've already met, just drop me a line and I'll send you some in the mail.

I have rose seeds regularly on my island. I'd happily trade anyone for lilies or cosmos though. (ME/Blueberry/Dragonfly Island)

I have all the flowers so far except lilies- if anyone want's to mail lily seeds to Axlor I'll make them weird bamboo jesus or gongs or a nice iron shelf!

Can you send mail to other islands? I didn't see that option in the mail section (and jfc 200 bells per letter is EXPENSIVE, in New Leaf it worked out to 40 bells).

Also when I went island hopping, I was only presented with one island. Do you have to keep asking Orville to search for friends' islands or can you get a list?
posted by divabat at 1:52 PM on April 3, 2020

You can only see friends’ islands if they’re open at the time you search, but if multiple islands are open he’ll give you a complete list to choose from, you don’t have to search multiple times in a row unless you’re hoping a new island has opened since you last looked.

You can mail to a friend once you’ve visited their island once. (I *think* if they visit you that also activates the mail thing, but I’m not 100% sure.)
posted by Stacey at 2:18 PM on April 3, 2020

You have to open your gates to accept visitors and only folks you're switch friends with can visit- then once you've visited you are an in game friend that you can send mail to- and if you toggle best friend on the in game friend list you can chat when you're both online even if you're not on the same island. So if you search for an island to visit (for example) and you see "Axlor" that means I'm online and my gates are open. Yes this is kinda silly- it's Nintendo so...

I have reset my game so many times and I still haven't gotten the right combo that I really want.

I just want apples, a blue airport, and not weird starting villagers. Is this really so much to ask? 😩

(I know it is. I just wanna put it out there into the universe in case the Animal Crossing gods hear my pleas... Please???)

I just want apples, a blue airport, and not weird starting villagers.

Of these, I'd prioritize the airport color. As far as I know, that can't be changed later. And is apples really the fruit you dislike the most or could you be flexible? (Your starting fruit is worth the least, so you will quickly pick up fruit from other islands and replant better trees.) I'm not quite sure when you get the tailor shop or the ability to make villagers you dislike move away, but I think by two weeks in, as long as you're somewhat willing to be swayed by suggestions of what to do from townsfolk.

My latest drama is that there is no place that it will let me put a bridge to connect two parts of my island that I'm tired of hopping between.

Got the recipe for a pear rug and an orange clock (a previously gifted item) so am hopeful for more fruit furniture sowing up in mysterious ways. (Also straightforward ways, like Homo neanderthalensis bringing me a cherry rug and divabat a coconut drink, thanks.) My house is getting so yummy. (The chocolate floor helps, though I chose the apple wall over white chocolate. I do like that wall, but I'm not sure most people would find it worth the 20 apples needed to construct it.)

the coconut drink didn't come from me! Though now I want one!

(Is there a way to craft food or do you have to buy them?)
posted by divabat at 8:39 PM on April 6, 2020

Oh dear. Guess that's what happens with four visitors and a mushy brain. (I just got sick and it's harder to think.) Food you can eat is harvested, like fruit. Food furniture, like a coconut drink (not actually drinkable, just looks fancy) are either made or bought. I'm guessing made, but the mefite who made it can chime in if they want

It was me! I got the recipe from a message bottle a few day's after I planted a bunch of coconuts on my beaches. I'm not sure if I have the ability to send recipes but I'm happy to if possible!

My wife has been playing and is looking to make some friends, visit some islands for fishing, and to trade/donate stuff if people need anything. We share a switch, our account is SW-7563-2554-7507. She’s got pears if anyone needs them.

I made a wishlist/trade list! If any of these strike your fancy, let me know.

I've been working on turning my house into a live performance venue, inspired by the myriad of fashion shows/weddings/parties/office meetings already hosted in game as well as all the conversations around live venues being shut down due to COVID19. In theory this should be possible via voice chat, though of course you're kinda limited to stuff you can hear (music, theatre, spoken word, comedy) - but you can get creative with the emotes & text if you want! I'm sure in practice it'll be a little more complicated, but I'm still super keen to try!

How limited are secondary accounts (same Switch so same island but not the Residents Rep)? Because in theory you could set up a second account just so you can build and maintain a whole other house (and make it whatever kinda building you want) but I don't know if that's also more complicated than it seems. I'd be willing to finish paying off the last 2.5mill bell mortgage for the last house upgrade (paying it off just lets you change your exterior for free which doesn't seem worth it) if it meant being able to open another building!

I also set up a performance area haha! I used the big flat rock on the beach and set up a mic and some campfires and a fossil is performing for an audience of teddy bears.

Would any of you be interested in a Slack/Discord/similar group chat medium where we can share things like turnip prices, items for sale/trade/catalogue, special NPCs, or any other kind of island shenanigans? Trying to work out trades even via specific Facebook groups can be overwhelming but a Mefite-specific chat would be fun!

Divabat I am super into a mefite-AC discord or slack! Also I sent you a spotlight via nook and the message they attached to it was mega sappy for some reason so enjoy? Also I can now craft a boomerang if you want one!

A slack or discord is a great idea!

Flower enthusiasts might be interested in this very detailed guide about flower genetics -- it sounds like getting certain hybrids might be more complicated than the earlier guides suggested. Also, I have all the orange tulips in the world. If you'd like some, lmk and I will visit and plop them all over your island -- no special permissions needed because digging is not required to plant plants!

After a visit to bleep's island just now that turned into an impromptu Mefi meetup I went back home and designed a MF tshirt. You can download it via the kiosk or if you come to my island you can take it directly off the back wall where it's hanging up. I tried for a while to get the MF in italics but that's pretty impossible with the restrictions of the designer with its wonky smoothing. I'm concerned now that all my villagers are gonna pick up the tshirt and wander around looking like they're mefites. Can they even type???

I would prefer a discord over a slack - it just works a lot better for me across my devices. I've tried to get in on some other groups and swaps and such but they're always huge with preexisting norms and I'm grumpy about it. I'd love a place to just chill with other AC mefites, since you're nearly all the folks that come visit my island anyway.

I just added some channels based on ones I've seen in other AC Discords but feel free to suggest others! Doesn't have to be AC-related either.

The Discord sounds very appealing to my sleep-deprived brain. I'm posting here before I do anything so my joining it doesn't seem so sudden. Except... I don't have Nintendo Switch Online, so I would be mostly just hanging out to talk about AC in a more general sense. Would that be alright?
posted by redrawturtle at 10:16 AM on April 19, 2020 [1 favorite]

Yeah of course! Folks are talking about different ideas for themes and techniques for flower breeding and stuff so there is plenty to talk about if you aren't doing the online stuff. Probably people will start posting pictures of their sweet fashion soon and that could be fun to do too.
