So I noticed Metafilter was sloooow today, now I know why.

I was wondering if MetaFilter was slow today or if it was just me. But then I figured that if I was the one who was slow today then MetaFilter would seem faster than usual to me by comparison, ergo it must be the site.

Those are the kind of logistical skills that got me an 800 on the GRE's "Analytical Reasoning" section.

on the bright side though, matt's new server has stayed up-and-running under what one can only assume is a pretty fierce pounding from the Fark readership.

Farkers have clicked on the above link 10459 times

Dear God, somebody make them stop!

hmm. that sucks to see 10,000 new people in a short time can slow the place to a crawl.

Shadowkeeper: Or, maybe you're running faster today.

Any way to cache the most popular threads instead of pulling them out of the database 10,000 times?

I noticed Shadowkeeper looked bluer than usual.

(yes, he's coming toward me in this scenario, and yes, I had to look it up.)
posted by gleuschk at 12:37 PM on September 25, 2002

perhaps only logged-in users should be able to pull pages straight from the database. visitors and non-logged-in users would see static pages that would refresh every 10 minutes or so.

(i'm assuming, of course, that there's a significant difference in server usage when someone views a page with all the posts dynamically pulled out of a database, versus a hard-coded version of the same page, please correct me if i'm wrong)

Perhaps Matt should just re-direct them to timecube.com by referrer. Why link to the discussion? Its probably just a cut and paste mistake.

Its like someone here linking to a fark discussion when they just want to talk about the link.

Ha! MetaFilter's been farked! Maybe we should MeFi them back ...or not.

Bullshit. American football or nothing. We got evanizer on the line, jonmc for kick-off returns, y6y6y6 at fearless strong safety, f_and_m as a smartassed receiver, mathowie as special teams coach, and Head coach owillis. We can't lose. (I want the outside linebacker spot; its that Romanosky thing...you know.)

...And even if we win -- even if we win, Hah! --- even if we play so far above our heads that our noses bleed for a week to ten days, even if God in Heaven above comes down and points his hand at our side of the field, even if every man woman and child joined hands together and prayed for us to win, it just wouldn't matter because all the really good looking girls would still go out with the guys from Fark 'cause they've got all the Photoshoppery! It just doesn't matter if we win or if we lose! It just doesn't matter! IT! JUST! DOESN'T! MATTER!

jonmc for kick-off returns...

OK!! I love football. I've been playing scrimmages my whole life. Most of them without a helmet, which may explain a lot.

I'd like to be quarterback, if only so I can get all the chicks, money, and recognition without having to get hit too hard.

Who needs jerseys, helmets and pads? Let's go with the international spirit of the Intaweb & Mefi, and play the beautiful (global) game - Football (aka soccer), shirts v. skins!

At least they'd have to give Mefi an advantage, being as more of them know the rules... (",)

I'm the aging lineman who summons up all his experience and grit to sack the quarterback and cause him to fumble the football, but in the process agrivates an old injury and has to be carried off the field, but then everyone else says "let's win this one.. for Hildago!"

Or else I'm the fucked-up psycho guy from The Longest Yard.

I thought I had read somewhere around here that visitors and folks not logged in got a static page that updated every 5 minutes. I can't remember where around here I read that, but I think I am recalling it correctly.

Lemme guess: you would be dating Hildago the aging lineman who summons up all his experience and grit to sack the quarterback and cause him to fumble the football, but in the process agrivates (that's his spelling now) an old injury and has to be carried off the field, right? Or at least, entertaining serious doubts about dating that guy with the double breasted overcoat and the expensive striped shirts who always wears a tie and diamond cufflinks who drives a sports car or is otherwise being driven by a chauffeur (with hat) and leaving him for Hildago the ageing lineman who (bah you get the idea)?

Right?
