Off-topic cross-cultural waffle: Does anyone know what "Many happy returns" means? I've always thought it meant what we Portuguese say on someone's birthday: "Que conte muitos!". This means: may you live for a long, long time.

The English/American/Spanish/French greeting seems to be quite mean, wishing you only a happy birthday, with little concern that the rest of the year (and life) not be absolute shite.
