With what? What is your question? I don't quite understand. The link in "Here's why this post sucks" seems to only lead home, is this where its supposed to go?
posted by Pollomacho at 9:07 AM on February 5, 2003

It's supposed to lead here.

This post screamed DiscussionFilter: nothing to report yet, but let's chat about it in the meantime! In real time! Comments! As events! Unfold! Um, no.

wth = "what the hell?"

The link was weak, and metafilter is about links. case closed.

i love the existence of "this post deleted because ..." but the because part confuses me every time. are they categories or specific to each thread?

p.s. wah, the 'fat' bra model thread has gone away too.
posted by danOstuporStar at 9:14 AM on February 5, 2003

Yes, agreed link was weak. Of course Jolly was incorrect in saying that there was no "real time" information as by the time he/she posted Powell had been speaking for quite some time. That aside, yes the link was weak, just wanted clarity on what Big_B was talking about.
posted by Pollomacho at 9:19 AM on February 5, 2003

Well, now that the speech is over, would it be permissable to post to a more informative link about the speech, and then start a discussion about it's ramifications.

A complex and very significant event just occured and I'm dying to know what everyone thinks.
posted by Pinwheel at 9:25 AM on February 5, 2003

ok fine the link was weak, but the discussion was (mostly good) i guess probably better suited to irc (which i don't have at work)

why are folks here so quick to jump down someone's throat?
posted by Big_B at 9:26 AM on February 5, 2003

(stupid question - no need to flame AGAIN)

If you're going to make a post related to Iraq and the impending war,
please reconsider, as the topic has been discussed previously many times.
posted by timeistight at 9:30 AM on February 5, 2003

True, but the situation has changed somewhat now that Powell has tipped the U.S. administration's hand. My own opposition to the war may be affected by this new evidence, and I'm curious if others will as well. If you don't dig on political threads, why not just skip it?

I suppose I could go elsewhere to engage in discussion, but I aprreciate the political minds that hand around these parts.

"I suppose I could go elsewhere to engage in [political] discussion"

Thank you.

apologies for the weak link - important issue - and good (or at least fair) discussion though...

you have to admit: http://www.roumieu.com/ was almost enough reason to leave it up. :)

This post was deleted for the following reason: It's just you. Really.

Heh, heh. As long as you're playing whack-a-mole with posts today Matt, I'm glad you're keeping your sense of humor.

Oh my good god specialk420, I sincerely thank you for that second link, "you". Funniest thing I've read on MeFi in months now. I'm in a public place right now, so I had to contain my laughter, but I will go home at some point and reread the material, if only to roll on the floor and have a foldy ~chuckle~.
posted by BlueTrain at 10:23 AM on February 5, 2003

specialk420 - I suck at frontpage posts. Truely. Which is why I don't do it anymore. I like to think Metafilter is better for it.

yes you're much better at commenting...

y6y6y6... i laughed hard at those FPPs. if it feels right do it (im working on this issue myself...).
posted by specialk420 at 10:32 AM on February 5, 2003

Come on, y6. I suck at front page posts too. Don't let being bad at it stop you - continue to make a fool of yourself like the rest of us do! It's very humbling.

Here's the deal, in case anyone is unclear: most members on metafilter are tired of iraq-related discussions. While some may say they are interested in what the political minds of metafilter think about the latest issue, I think (and I'm pretty sure most members would back this up) that political discussions are rather poorly done on this site.

That said -- if you're going to post something about Iraq or politics in general, it better be something good. Something truly different that uncovers a nuance that hasn't been explored before, and it would be nice if the comments on an iraq or political thread had some nuances besides the typical partisan garbage.

Here's an example: "Colin Powell reportedly is pushing for war a little bit more today than yesterday" is a weak post because we've already discussed Colin Powell many times in the past and this is a tiny new nit. "Saddam found in South America, on the lam" would be an entirely new thing if it were true and raise all sorts of issues.

So again: feel free to post about Iraq or politics, but only if you feel they are significant enough to overcome all the previous discussions that might have taken place, or if they contain really, really interesting links to information.

"yes you're much better at commenting..."

No, I suck at that too.

But I've gotten better. I really think I have. I make a serious attempt to not call people names. I've seriously cut down on comments such "please fold your stupid ass opinion till it's all sharp fucking edges and ram it right up your dumb ass". I've vowed to eliminate "fuck you" from my debate technique. I've backed off on the mefi-policing I used to feel was important.

For every comment you see from me here I end up tossing half a dozen after previewing them.

If you go back and look at how I was a year and a half ago I think you'll agree I'm doing better. That's what I'm shooting for.

I have a serious personality problem that makes me act out here. I've poo-ed all over the place more than once. And not just here. I had to scuttle my own website for a while after dragging it into the shitter last year. My site these days is so happy and friendly I want to puke sometimes, but I have to admit it wroks better that way. Less stress. Less anger.

I am a dick, and Metafilter would probably be better off without me. But I haven't been able to stay away.

But over and over Matt has asked people to cut down on the political posts. No hard rules, just cut down. Please. Please please. And people just ignore him. At least I try, you know?

[on preview: What Matt said.]

This member backs matt's position as well. There's no shortage of online political discussion areas on the web, in usenet and IRC (not #mefi). And I expect there are political minds eager to discuss these issues there.
posted by Salmonberry at 10:54 AM on February 5, 2003

I forgot to mention that we've been through this several times in the past with other subjects that have hogged the spotlight. The election in 2000 had many members calling for a moritorium on all political posts and I had to put some special notes on the posting page asking people to only post significant news. If there was another week of several shuttle posts per day, I'd probably be asking people to back off that as well.

Heck, when the "vibrating broom" and "all your base" and "michael jackson drops a baby" memes came out, I had to change the posting page to ask people not to post it.

When any topic reaches saturation point in the media, don't just mirror it here because it's "news", try to find something interesting about it, or wait until something truly interesting does happen. The tough part is getting everyone in a large community to understand this. My 10 closest friends feel pretty much the same way and we rarely discuss the war for all the previous reasons, but expand that to 1,000 or 10,000 people and the definition of "something big enough to warrant discussion" varies widely.

thanks for heads up matt. i think political discussion is so poorly done elsewhere - especially mainstream media (has anyone watched wishywashy mcneil -leher lately? or scripted sunday morning shows?)- that i often find some the best info (and most informative links).... here.

Could we just establish an acronym or emoticon for: "user preemptively announces that he has some sort of personalty problem and therefore absolves himself in advance of responsibility for his own commentary?"

I vote: 0>:O denoting angry, indiscriminate pot-shots, but with a little halo of "I can't help myself" so as to make clear that the user has a free pass on ordinary community rules.

This is an obvious attempt to troll and derail the thread by accusing us of all being homosexuals, you should be ashamed of yourself! How could we allow an obvious bigot run free on this site! This is just like that time that Bush told Sharon it was OK to kill all those Palestinian babies from the cell phone in his tax deductible SUV running on stolen Iraqi oil! You are just like Hitler! You baby dangler!
