Can we have a search function for AskMe? March 18, 2004 3:22 PM   Subscribe

Matt, I'm in love with ask mefi. I have ideas for questions that I eventually want to ask (or research) but I want to make sure that it hasn't been asked before. Can we please have a "search" ask (rather than getting results from MetaTalk or the main filter?)

[matt's voice] I'm working the code to post you in porn.

Maybe we can have an "ask- filter" category in Meta-Talk so those specific requests can be referenced while your busy handling your backed log of work. As I have read requests relating to ask-filter that you have covered or touched on.

Sheesh, I requested too, sorry.

You could always post an Ask Metafilter question that goes "I'd like to ask: this but am not sure it's been asked before. Has it, if so give me a link.

Somehow I find myself doubting if you'd actually use the search function if it were to be provided…

Filmgeek: The MetaTalk search facility works really well (most of the time) and will turn up everything on AskMe.

Matt has been working hard on AskMe and, so far as I can gather, he's been in active pruning mode, shaping it into something both useful and entertaining. Call it behind-the-scenes but it's working.

I say this without condescension as I too was eager to jump the gun and propose quick fixes. AskMe is good enough to wait. At the limit, it's fine as it is, without ponies. Imho, of course.

I'd be happier if the cause of all the outages were addressed first.

Oops, I should really catch up on metatalk in chronological order before bitching.

Have ponies come up in Ask Metafilter?

Google knows.

What weston was trying to say was: you can use Google to search AskMeFi by putting site:ask.metafilter.com after your search string.

From looking at that Google search, I realize it'd be really nice to have page titles that provided some indication of the question. But this has probably already been noted somewhere on Metatalk.

Ask Metafilter - what a great feature. I have had many questions for the group, mostly somewhat odd or offbeat, but lo, each time a search using Google as taught by nicwolff found the question asked and answered. Metafilter makes me even feel a little normal, sometimes.

Yes, AxMe is great. I love answering questions! Bring them on! :-)

Something to consider: if a question has already been asked and answered, who cares? Stuff scrolls off the front page so fast, it's not as though there's going to be a bunch of duplicated content. If some intrepid soul wants to link back to a previous discussion, then peace be upon him, but for all of those who missed the previous question, the new post and the link back would both be boons.
