Pony: categories for posts May 18, 2001 3:54 PM   Subscribe

Recently there's been an awful lot of posts each day on Metafilter. This is great, except that topics I'm involved with are flying down the page very quickly, and I'm losing track of what discussions I'm in. So, I had an idea.

Now, after reading the earlier thread about 'limiting the site to 10,000 users', perhaps my idea is good. Perhaps it's bad. It's probably not implementable, but here it is anyway.

Why not allow people to choose a category for their postings? Just like Memepool does. For example.. 'Crazy'.. 'Fad'.. 'Politics'.. etc. While the front page would continue to show all posts, it would nice to filter them myself, and not have front page posts moderated by someone else (which seems likely in the future). No?

Oh, and before I get slapped down [g] I know this probably deserves to go in the requested features metatalk board, but since my idea stemmed from an earlier discussion in here.. oh well, slap me down anyway!

i was thinking the same thing the other day. mostly because i was trying to follow the thread about kaycee for several days and had to keep scrolling and looking for it. it would be cool if there were a way to flag discussions i am participating in and have those set aside on another page that i can easily access.

My Favorite threads page where individual users can mark threads for later read. Thread numbers stored in cookie. Matt said previously he was open to the idea.

Should take care of the problem...

If you posted a comment in a thread, choose the sort by "my comments" in the drop down menu and it will list the last 20 threads you have commented on. You aren't participating in more than 20 discussions at a time are you?

No, but people don't always comment in threads they wish to follow.

This has all been discussed before previously on Metatalk, by the way. Here's one example... Not to say that the discussion should stop. Just so that one can see what has been said before.

Jay's idea is something I've been kicking around for some time, and I will implement this very soon.

sort by "my comments"? seriously? I don't even have this as one of my sort-by options.... or am I missing something major?

....missing that I should never post before coffee... guess the pulldown menu actually changes once one logs in, no matter how clueless they are.

I think there's a bug in the "My Comments" pull-down menu. It often isn't present on the first page I visit at MetaFilter, but appears after I choose a different post-sorting option.

Actually, yeah I am trying to get the "my comments" pull-down to work this evening and it is nowhere to be seen. I've logged in, reloaded, etc, but no go. [Mac/Netscape 4.7]. Move this thread to "bugs"?
