strange relationship between posts and the posters' usernames March 20, 2004 1:31 PM   Subscribe

We know that nofundy usually posts about "Fundies", hama7 has posted Hama-Net, and Vidiot's first post was about TV newscasts, but hasn't the relationship between posts and the posters' usernames gotten a little strange lately?

First, I saw Keyser Soze's AskMe about "my friend getting busted by the cops" and its MetaTalk follow-up. But then I noticed posts from PenDevil about rewriting the Chinese Constitution, Dome-O-Rama about an Act of Congress, psychotic venom about these depressing times, loquacious about Rumsfeld's words, ferociouskitty about howwasshe.com, and four panels about China's Building Blitz.

And AskMe has a problem with the French from staggernation and a mouse in a messy room from Slimemonster.

Am I just going overboard when I see the connections between a car insurance site and mr crash davis, Jay-Z and soundofsuburbia, or Sudden Oak Death and barkle (oops, that should be bargle) ? If so, just say "adjust your meds, Wendell", and we'll leave it at that. If not, I'll be back tonight with a post about Wendell Willkie.

Wendell, it's time for a med tweak. You're starting to sound too much like me. ;-)

XQUZYPHER, as usual misses the point. while it is certainly in the interest of the fat cat corprate fascists to keep you focused on irrelevancies like the one he raises, the fact remains that carrots are, and always have been, more orange than oranges. (ted nugent pointed this out tunefully in the mid-1960's and as a result has been relegated to the slagheap of rusting motor city madmen.) why, if you bunch of bottled-water-drinking, laissez-faire-economy-cheering trained baboons had a scintilla of a clue, you'd be descending right now on the carrot fields demanding an answer. but nooooo - you've got your fancy-schmancy war in iraq to keep you warm and comfy and occupied!

Hmm, people choose usernames based on their interests and personalities and then they post topics in which they have an interest or are compatible with their personalities.

ch'ovunque ei vada io possa seco gire -.

E ciò dicendo alor di duol morío.

Nothing's more Orange than the Swan.

[hisses at the poaching Goblin]

Not related to my user name, but I thought it was a funny coincidence that my first FPP was about a poem, my first MeTa thread asked, "Who is MetaFilter's Poet Laureate?" and my second AskMe thread asked for help in identifying a poem (my first AskMe thread sought to identify a novel). Funny coincidence because I don't even read poetry much.

Oh, and well I can't vouch for Witty's wittiness or otherwise since I don't pay enough attention to what he posts, I fondly remember this exchange between stavrosthewonderchicken and Witty in this thread:

Stav: As others have noted in the past, I'm always amused at the happy contradiction between a user who calls himself 'Witty' but posts comments of such thundering dirt-stick-stone stupidity.

Witty: How cute. 'Witty' is my surname. I assume 'stavrosthewonderchicken' is just what you call yourself? Do you wear a costume?

A few days ago, a guy I sort of know had to check off some boxes on a test he was taking. His name is Mark! And he was making check marks! My mind reeled at the coincidence.

Last week, I was walking with my friend William, and we saw a bird at a birdfeeder. The really eerie part - everyone calls my friend Bill for short, and birds have bills! I got goosebumps.

Just today, my best friend and I drove within a block of a convenience store that sells M&Ms. Her name is Candy. I am not kidding.

So what are you taking, Wendell? I've had effects like this at times. You're taking something which has an overall stimulant effect and ramps up activity in your frontal cortex, I'd guess.

I knew a woman who claimed that for a few weeks, under the influence of certain meds, she was able to smell over the telephone. I believed her. I still do.

I'm not saying what you're noticing isn't real - it's more like a localized distortion such as that created by an object of unusually great mass - such as the humungous mass of jabber that is Metafilter - which, locally, warps the shape of space and bends the path of light rays. I think your observation - "The Wendell Effect" - is real enough. But what the hell does it mean?

Well, I'm off. I have to go and make my long prepared post on government warnings about how sport fisherman shouldn't eat freshwater fish - which tend to be poisoned by high levels of mercury. 'Course, canned Albacore tuna is pretty damn high in Mercury too. Hmmm. Fish.......

I was driving today, to pick up a certain (unspecified) medication which makes me behave in a certain (unspecified) fashion, and I heard mention of a certain band of which I was unaware :

"Troutfishing in America" . They make something they call Trout Music

"Guitarist Ezra Idlet and Bassist Keith Grimwood have played together as the duo Trout Fishing in America for 22 years. They're an anachronism in many ways. They play contemporary, acoustic-based music, but they are a throwback to buskers, vaudeville, and even old-fashioned medicine shows"
