Baltimore/DC games meetup May 18, 2004 1:23 PM   Subscribe

After seeing how many board game fans there are in this AskMeFi thread yesterday, I was wondering....would anyone be interested in a Baltimore/DC Area (I'm in-between) MeFi Board Game MeetUp? I'd love to play Settlers of Catan or Puerto Rico against some new players. (My brother's tactics are getting way too predictable after playing so much.)

I'm in, if it's closer to Baltimore than DC.

I don't even know what you're talking about. How about a MeFi Let's-go-get-some-chicks Meetup?

You're a chicks-with-dicks man aren't you?

i_cola, you probably meant a homophobic trollish chicks-with-xxxxx man. No, I'm not. I've been known to be an exception around these parts.
BTW, I know the origin of your nickname: it actually stands for irrepressible cola (in spanish). Do I get a prize?

Nip it, the both of ya.

i_cola... uncalled for.

I'd be curious how this went. I was gonna offer up my place for a movie screening meetup (toronto) but figured, who the fuck is gonna wanna watch movies, the point is MEET up. But hell, if people will play Hungry Hippos...

111: Wrong! No prize...looks like riffola will find out at last ;-)

Any of you play Puerto Rico online at BSW? I'll take you all on!
posted by salmacis at 5:07 PM on May 18, 2004

If I was there, I'd sure as fuck want to play trivial pursuit with y'all. But alas.
posted by Hildago at 5:33 PM on May 18, 2004

Salmacis, do you have to chat at BSW? I have chat phobia. Also, do people get mad if you're just learning how to play? I've never played any of the games there.

I think a game meet-up is a great idea, by the way. I also think a movie meet-up is inspired.

I don't care what all y'all are going to do, but I'm totally showing up for game night. I've played with emptybowl before, and he's a lot of fun. (Take that as you will...)

I'd totally show, but I won't be visiting the area for quite a while. =P If there was one up my way though, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

Hmm...I've got friends in DC I could stay with...

You guys. Do not discourage 111 from going. Don't you want to find out what he's like?

speaking of Hungry Hungry Hippos...

btw: I would LOVE to make it to the board game meetup. It's a shame I live in South Florida. (Anyone wanna meet up down here?)

An idea for the next Bay Area meetup: Albatross in Berkeley. Combine booze with board games, billiards, darts, and FREE POPCORN in a pub setting.

iconomy: I've taught players on BSW how to use the (admitttedly odd) interface no problemo. There's not much chatting there either. It's purely gameplaying.

And if anyone in Oxford, UK wants a game drop me an email.

I've tried playing Puerto Rico on BSW, but I can't figure it out at all. The fact that everything's in german doesn't really help.

I'm willing to offer up my place for a gaming Meet Up. (I'm about 20 minutes south of Baltimore and 30 minutes north of DC.) And if people from the NY area are thinking of coming down here for gaming, I'd be willing to go up there, too. That way we can have two meetups. When do you guys think we could do this? I have no life, so my schedule is relatively open.

But hell, if people will play Hungry Hippos...

"Now we play the waiting game........eh, the waiting game sucks. Let's play Hungry Hungry Hippos."

I could host the game night for the greater NJ/NY area. emptybowl will gladly bring some of his games up this way. I'm close to a NJ Transit train station, which is helpful. The only caveat is that my apartment is pretty damn small, so it would be... cozy.

Oxford, UK? I'm always up for a game of Settlers of Catan in Oxford.

i'm in for some (presumably) howard county board gaming, emptybowl. (assuming knowing how to play is not an actual requirement.) sounds more comfy than ye olde barmeet.

Emtpybowl: PR works much better if you download the English client. People will be only too happy to help you.

Adrianhon: I'd have emailed you, but ntl's email is not working at the moment. We meet at 8pm on Tuesdays in the Original Swan on the Cowley Road. Come along and join us!

(shamless self-promotion)

If you live in the NYC area, a side-company of mine runs a quarterly 10-hour gaming fiesta called Recess. It's a pretty heavy mix of RPG's and Board Games. If it's popular, you'll find people playing it. Admission is $10, so it's a minimal commitment. We just had our last one this past weekend, so the next one should be late summer. I'd love to meet some MeFi'ers there.

So, when do you guys want to do this? Are people free on Memorial Day weekend, or is that too soon?
posted by emptybowl at 11:13 AM on May 20, 2004

Memorial Day is not good for me. I've taken the liberty to setup a page on the MeFi Wiki for - organizing the meetup
