What a novel idea.

same topics areas keep coming up in batches (maybe because they came to mind on site(ght)) and since some members seem to have already become the defacto authorities in some areas, someone usually mentions them--
i know there are agreed codes some communities know and use for, like, ethicsFilter, techFilter, stainFilter, theoreticalFilter, etc.--

just a thought for randomly time comprised more newly active people like me

p.s. (mentioned on other posts) could there be one of those reloading side tables of visited comments/posts that maybe could be turned on and off? i like the clean simplicity of Mefi but with the capricious google ad space set up already anyway...

i didn't think i was the first one to think of it, just thot to ask because i was skimming marked metalks that mentioned it,

every time this comes up someone talks about fooFilter tags like it's some formal system. i always thought it was just a joke. did i miss another memo?

if there is a formal anything here, i think i'm the temp or sandwich vendor no one remembers letting in the building.
people seem to like the sandwiches but i swear i have no idea what happened to the coffee money or where they keep the staplers.

The fooFilter tags are not a formal system but they are an indicator that people *want* to categorize their posts or rather, to state somehow up front what their post is generally about.

Lacking anything formal to do this with, the Foofilter system has just arisen as an informal system that fills a void.

I had forgotten about metatalk categories until this post. I guess brain just automatically weeds them out as useless info.

ooh, wait, i wasn't suggestion the blahFliter as a standard, just an example of how i've seen some self labeling.
i was suggesting the category option of the Talk post form and asking if there already was a mefi agreed code like how some forums places put tags on the lead post (like MI, tech help, Poll, misc., etc.)

I posted the list of categories in a thread where I described how the keywords were going to work, but I can't find it. I'm swamped with work right now, but this is the next thing on my plate. I'm hoping to have it done in a few weeks.

I like AskMe as it is. Though a new category in MeTa "Ponies asked for repeatedly" might be helpful.
posted by biffa at 2:35 AM on September 29, 2004

I would also like the keyword pony, but I'll wait for it. This isn't going to come out right, but it's the nicest way I could come up with to express my concern:

Could you please stop with the fucking SMS speak?
  • "u" is not the same as "you"
  • "r" is not the same as "are"
  • "mo" isnt the same as "moment"
I know I should be more diplomatic about it, but it just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I'm just turning into quonsar (oh, the horror) but if you're so busy that you can't afford the time to type the rest of the letters, don't come here to type.

The ether fumes are making my eyes water.
posted by trondant at 8:57 AM on September 29, 2004

i think ask is fine, but i was considering that it would be easier to search: under "foodfilter" or something for example since people have been doing it anyway, linking post to post and days seem to take on themes once someone posts, people start posting related questions.

trondant: i think your tank is leaking.
iron:not offended (i've got my own irks)but do i have to capitalize consistently as well?
are we going MW or OED?
do quotes count?
can we have a quon-off?
