Is this because I'm new? November 22, 2004 12:58 PM   Subscribe

Help! I can't set up links within my comments. Beneath the comment box I only have Preview and Spellcheck: no link button, no bold, no italics. Is this because I'm new? I sure would like to be able to link to things to, you know, back up my comments. Thanks for your help!

I'm using Internet Explorer.

you can always link just using the html. Just switch the [ and ] with a < and> respectively.

Link
[a href="http://www.foo.com"]Link[/a]

Italic
[em]text[/em]

Bold
[strong]text[/strong]

Back in my day we hand coded links... and we liked it!

Ah, yes, coding by hand... just like Grandma used to do. In minus fifty degree weather. Before another twenty-hour shift in the acid mines.

Seriously, though-- coding by hand is a good idea.

Links cost extra.

Shane, that made me chuckle:

*ahem* freshmen, that is.

I know it's evangelising, but why not splash out on a copy of FireFox?
It's free, and it works - woot!

If XQUZYPHYR is correct, then Firefox won't help, mostly because there is no OS9 port of Firefox.

no, I'm a new user too, and using OSX mac, safari, and I don't have the buttons there.
Of course, I know HTML so I don't really care. Nor did I notice until this was brought up.

Hey, I never noticed that either, Buddha. Same setup, no buttons. Cool.
posted by tracicle at 5:30 PM on November 22, 2004

Tracicle, this has to do with the fact that Matt figures us safari-using mac-owners are savvy enough to figure out HTML without needing special little buttons.

safari doesn't support the right kind of javascript. In many apps you won't get helpful UI hacks like html buttons in safari.

Use firefox. You'll even get to use keystrokes (control-shift-a to build a link after highlighting the text).

this is eerie-- just as BuddhaInABucket can't see the link buttons using OSX and Safari, I (Buddhanarchist), cannot see them... You guys messin' with our prajna? Are we not sufficiently piercing the veil of Maya to see... The Buttons?
Would love to get those buttons on safari as I (*ashamed*) know no html.. pathetic no-button-seein' buddhanarchist that I am...

Mr. Fuzzy_Monster? Yes, welcome to MeTa. I'm the Wallet Inspector...now if you would be so kind as to let me carefully inspect your wallet...thank you...let's see, everything appears to be in order...(YOINK)

I (*ashamed*) know no html...

All the HTML you need to know:

<strong>Bold</strong>

<em>Italic</em>

<a href="http://www.metafilter.com/">Link</a>

<big>BIG</big>

<small>small</small>

&hearts; = ♥
(IMPORTANT: After you hit Preview, the &hearts; will turn into an image of a heart. Delete this image, replace it with &hearts; again, and THEN hit post!)

<img src="http://whatever.jpg"width=25%> =

(Use images RARELY.)

Hey, wait a minute! That wasn't the Wallet Inspector!

Thank you for the welcome, Mr. davidmc. And thanks for your help, everyone.

I get it: html makes bunnies. I thought it would be harder than that.

(Actually: I got Firefox for OS X, as to avoid html altogether-- but its good to know both. Thanks Shane)
