getting and highlighting great conversations March 8, 2005 11:45 AM Subscribe
Ahem, ok a two for one.
Would a "great conversation" flag be something desirable? I tried to flag a conversation by flagging the fpp post, but frankly the post was... so so, the conversation that followed was terrific though, so I just chose "other" in the flag list.
And can people envision a method to encourage well crafted posts instead of the rush-to-post-before-someone-beats-me- to-it?
I know once comments start deleting a poor/bad post becomes hard despite there possible being a much superior (double) post. the only things I can think of seems like a lot of work for dear leader.

Where are the flags, "!"? Don't see them today.
Thought there is a flag option that marks it for the front page side bar.

The solution to the rush to post problem is a lock out time - no responses in the first 30 minutes of a new post. Since it may not always be desirable the poster could choose to override the lockout.

So then folks would prepare their comments in advance, during the lockout period, and submit them all at once, at the 30-minute point, trying to beat each other to be at the top of the page and also not reading anyone's else's comments before posting ?

I'd pay attention to "good conversation" flags.
Flagging individual comments in the blue and grey would get tedious. Matt made a good call keeping that to the green.

Sorry, I was wrong; you can indeed flag good comments in blue/gray. I just never saw anything show up.
In AskMe I appreciate the checkmarks next to "best answers."

I'm just curious as to what will happen when I flag all my comments as "great posts." Will Matt notice?

minor bug notice as well. When i flag a post, it opens up a new page to say I've flagged it, and then refreshes the newly opened page. I assume that it does this because I have "Open links in new window" tickbox set. It's not a big issue, and it's not that annoying, but thought I'd tell you.

Uhhh, what's the point of flagging a great conversation, since only Matt sees the flags?

seanyboy, I was responding to the main post, not your idea of flagging all your own comments. I LIKE snowmen!

Matt has said that posts flagged as 'great' will be considered for posting in the sideblog. (on preview, what sciurus said)
Yes. He'd notice if you flag all of your own posts as great. Then he'd start sending your flags to /null. See Matt's post from when he first started the flags feature. If you "cry wolf", you'll be ignored.

Let's have more flags and more flagging! That way, Matt might never get anything done save looking at endless lists of flagged messages!

I actually think fewer flags would be fine, but perhaps more broad categories, ie lump great post/comment/thread and lump offensive/derail/? ....
Such that all offensive behavior is one flag, all good things another and technical (double post say) a third
