Del.icio.us link - useful or no? May 17, 2005 6:30 AM   Subscribe

After seeing this simple del.ico.us feature, I was wondering... would a [save to del.ico.us] link for threads in MeFi and Ask MeFi be a useful addition?

personally, i'd rather have a more reliable site.

In case it wasn't clear, this would be on the timestamp of the post only (not on every comment), probably before the [!] and it might say "bookmark" or simply "save" or "del.ico.us" but those are details.

I've seen tons of delicious links to mefi threads lately and figured it might make it even easier for folks to track threads there.

personally, i'd rather have a more reliable site.

I added three hotfixes yesterday and tuned the java server slightly, and things have been better since last night when I finished.

thanks matt. hadn't read your comment on the older thread when i posted that.

"would a [save to del.ico.us] link for threads in MeFi and Ask MeFi be a useful addition?"

I, personally, wouldn't find it useful in any way. And it would be more (admittedly simple) UI gadgetry, which I think detracts from MetaFilter's beautiful simplicity.

I don't see any real need for it. Whenever I see a MeFi thread that I want on my del.icio.us, I just use the toolbar 'post' button - this wouldn't be performing anything different than what you're suggesting, right?

It'd be a useful way for folks who want to save a thread for later perusal (rather than dropping a "." in it). If it's easy to do and can be done without looking hideous then why not?

ooh, yus pls.

because i can't put the "post to del.icio.us" button on my toolbar at work, i'd find it useful.

Hasn't the Firefox Brigade shown up in this thread yet? Surely there's some nifty plugin to do that for you? (And no, we don't all use Firefox, but then I don't use del.icio.us either, so a Firefox-only solution is, for once, fine with me.)

I am not sure why this feature is necessary. del.icio.us already has bookmarklets for people to use to bookmark a page to del.icio.us. And Firefox already has an extention available for right-clicking to post a current page or link to del.icio.us.

It would be nice but there are other things that would be a higher priority, methinks.
posted by matildaben at 7:42 AM on May 17, 2005

No. Although this would be a useful feature, I have the following issues with it.

Firstly, anyone happy enough to use delicious and delicioused metafilter links are probably smart enough to use the firefox extension or an equivalant anyway. The last thing you need is idiots complaining about "features" which have nothing to do with you.

Secondly, I'd rather see bookmarked MeFi comments on my user page, and I think this is exactly the sort of feature you could charge for. If you add it to delicious now, then you're (a) unlikely to do it later and (b) it's gonna be hassle moving the links from one place to another.

My 2p.

Because people are lazy and like to have all their stuff in one place (i.e. integrated) There are a lot of companies out there making money because of these things. I think this would be cool.

I can see how this would be useful for Ask, but in the blue my preference would be to bookmark the links within the posts, not the posts themselves.

it's a don't-care for me. I'd love to be able to bookmark threads to my userpage instead, having to leave MeFi just to get back into MeFi doesn't appeal too much.

I suppose it'd be nice, but my "post to del.icio.us" bookmark works just fine.

I second seanyboy's comments.

I second jessamyn & me3dia. I've only ever saved a couple of threads and am happy with 'exp. post del.icio.us' plugin. The posted links in FPP's are a different matter - them I save more often, but I do it from the outside websites anyways. *shrug*

I like del.icio.us and I like Metafilter but I don't see much point to this feature. Maybe if it could be switched on or off in user options that would be a nice compromise?

Something to bookmark comments would be nice. Not back to delicious--that's easy enough now. Something within metafilter. Which would really be like tagging comments.

It'd be better for me to be able to save a particular thread for my own perusal here. I mentioned my pony way back in november...with our fearless leader complimenting the idea.

Again, i'd rather have it here than del.icio.us

Count me among the few (?) who still don't understand what all the fuss is about concerning del.icio.us. So, you know, whatever.

I do have a mefi favorites feature working in a beta form. I was thinking it would be part of a mefi pro thing for a couple bucks per month.

Uh oh... here we go. :^)
posted by Witty at 10:03 AM on May 17, 2005

Well... For me, it depends; I use the firefox extension to post anything quickly to delicious, but when I go back to mefi links from delicious, I'm not logged in, so if there were some pretty way to do it from here and remain logged in when you click the link back at delicious, that would be very nice.

Otherwise, in terms of my personal system, I guess I'm mostly indifferent.

these mefi pro fees, they'll be pro-rated for downtime, yes?
posted by quonsar at 10:51 AM on May 17, 2005

Sure, whenever the site's down there will be a link on the site you click to indicate that you're not getting uptime. Adjustments will be made on your monthly Metafilter bill.

Strange, I'm always euphoric when I'm coming.

Bookmarklets already provide this feature in a non-site specific way. RSS will be far more useful.

del.icio.us is a major pain in the ass, especially when it comes to deleting or editing multiple links. Favorites in IE is more user-friendly, especially for temporary links.

I don't see what harm it would do to add the feature for those of us who do use del.icio.us. So I'm all for it.
posted by mhaw at 11:44 AM on May 17, 2005

There is no harm, really... except for those of us who would rather see the feature (that is bookmarking of some kind) added to the site differently. For me, I would prefer the feature to save boomarked threads locally, on my userpage for example. I don't and will never use del.icio.us. So I'd rather not see this effort "wasted" on something I won't use. I think our idea makes this tool available to more users, than it would be if it was tied into del.icio.us somehow. Either way, I'll live.
posted by Witty at 12:00 PM on May 17, 2005

I'm all for it. I'm not sure how this is "effort wasted" given that it is simple for you to implement. And when 2.0 comes out, we'll have our localized bookmarks and all will be fine.

What Witty said.
posted by deborah at 12:59 PM on May 17, 2005

It isn't a matter of simplicity... or how easy it is to use. I just know that, for me, if the feature involves anything outside of Metafilter, I won't use it. If tagging a thread saved it to my userpage, I would DEFINITELY use it. And I would bet more people would use such a feature if it did stay in-house. It's because of that, that I think any other choice for this idea would be a "waste". The goal should be which idea would benefit the most people and see the most use.
