Metatalktail Hour: Outside of a Dog

Happy Saturday wayfarers! For today's talktail hour, I'd like to ask: If you could escape into a novel — actually be transported into that world — which book would it be, and why? [more inside]

What is the difference between MetaFilter and AskMeFi?

1)When do post on MetaFilter and when on AskMeFi? I can't decide which one to post my questions on? I read many questions on both but they all look general (any topic except about the website itself) to me. 2)What is "Uptime"? I see it in the "category" below 3)Why doesn't the category list AskMeFi, and MetaTalk Couldn't the question/request be specific to MetaTalk for example? 4)"My request requires community input and cannot be addressed by contacting MetaFilter staff." I checked the box because you have to in order to post but I don't think that it can't be addressed by the staff, I just find the community could answer it sooner, and others may have the same question.

Metafilter Fantasy (American) Football?

It's that time of the year again! If you are interested in joining this year's iteration of MeFite Fantasy (American) Football, please feel free to click here and join up! People that join this league tend to take it pretty seriously, so if you do sign up, please be prepared to make the commitment. We will be having a live draft, date TBD. If you had a team last year, you should be good to go. If you had a team last year and did better than me, feel free to sit this one out! Ha! Just kidding.

Metatalktail Hour: Tell me of your happy place, Usul

Welcome to the weekend, Talktail friends. This week, it would cheer me immensely to hear of your happy place (or places). Maybe it's a literal location, small or large, or maybe it's an activity, or an event, a season or holiday, being with a person or group, or just some harmonious synchronicity of conditions that create a perfect moment. Where or what is it that warms the cockles of your heart? [more inside]

On Cooling Off MetaTalk Threads

MetaTalk threads often generate a lot of heat. I’ve seen more people button from MeTa than elsewhere on MeFi. How can we cool off threads about community concerns? [more inside]

MetaFilter Usage Statistics

In the Steering Committee voting thread (please vote!), I posted some data analysis how much people are using MetaFilter, based on the data in the infodump. That became somewhat of a derail, so here is a thread to discuss what this data means, and how it should inform our decisions going forward. [more inside]

Do we know the demographics of metafilter users?

Reading the recent user survey summary, I see a lot of talk about the identity of the user base. Do we actually know what the demographics are of MetaFilter users? Has there ever been an attempt to survey the users' identities? It would be interesting to know how people think of themselves in terms of nationality, politics, gender, race, sexuality, class, etc. I often read assertions in comments about the identities of the user base, but I am wondering if they correspond to the user base in reality.

On not repurposing abortion rights terminology

I am horrified to see, in discussions of COVID on this website, that we are okay with using the fascist co-opting of the phrase "my body my choice" in terms of anything other than abortion now. Setting aside that neither pregnancy nor abortion is contagious, that phrase means and has long meant something very specific and it should not be used to justify refusal to get vaccinated or to protect others. A Huge Birthday Thank-you!

So a few weeks ago I posted a question asking for ideas to Harry Potter-ify my wife's birthday. I wanted to thank Metafilter generally for being the kind of place where I can ask that kind of question and also thank everybody who took the time to give an answer. There were a ton of really great suggestions! [more inside]

What does flagging as fantastic mean?

I had thought that flagging a comment as fantastic means "this is a bad comment, within the realm of fantasy, and should be removed." But I notice others apparently using this flag to mean "this is a good comment, kudos!" So which is it? And if the latter, what does flagging a comment as good accomplish?

FanFare monthly "Best Of"?

I posted this on FanFare Talk but it doesn't seem widely used. I like FanFare, but there's no curated or automated sort of "What's on you shouldn't miss" list. I propose we have a simple open chat type thread where we mention our favorite movies/television shows/books in the past month filed under "Special Events." This should take no new additional development effort or moderator intervention. Any serious objection to it? [more inside]

Thanks for the cards!

I just got a bunch of Christmas cards from the card swop that happened back in 2021. No idea why they took so long to arrive, and they're soaked through so I can't see who they are from, as the writing's all bled away! Possibly Needlegirl was one of them? So if you sent me a card ❤️ thank you so much ❤️
