wow. anonymous - despite having a bunch of issues with sex, relationships, health, work, depression, relationships, marriage, dating, jobs & love - sure has a hell of a lot of sweetheart, muse, date and spouse contacts! how can i emulate this alchemical transmutation of general leaden fuckedupness into popularity gold?

I've been wondering about the conventions and expectations for "Links to" and "Linked by" in our profiles. So far I've been "linked by" one person, who I don't know in real life but who I'm quite happy to be associated with based on what I've seen of their contributions. If a person ever spontaneously linked to me and I wasn't into it for some reason, would there be a way to point this out to them (if they didn't have contact info)? Or would that be irrelevant because linking is really just more of a global "favorite" button, without any connotation of "A likes B, therefore we can assume B likes A"?

Highlighting contacts? Would it be possible to highlight the name of anyone you have listed in your contacts? Nothing flashy, just something to draw attention to the poster's name if you are skimming a long thread.

On the usercontacts page, we can see MetaFilter posts, MetaTalk posts, Ask MetaFilter questions, favorites, and playlists from our contacts. I think we should also see projects and songs posted by our contacts there, too. [A little more inside]

Please explain the "Contacts" section of the profile.

Where, and under what circumstances should/would I link to another MeFite? Is this something people do in posts, or elsewhere?

Viewing the Contact Info of a Profile with Contacts seems to indicate something external to MeFi -- I see a column of links to profiles, and a column of external URLs, but nothing coupling them (although some of the identities of the latter are obvious).

And what's an example of a Contribution from a Contact?

More FNG questions: On my Profile page, I see contacts listed. Or rather that people have listed me as a contact. It looks like an addressbook sort of thing. What does this mean? What does a contact do? How are these used? Is there a contact etiquette? I searched the wiki but couldn't find anything (maybe because I couldn't guess the magic keyword.)

[My Little Pony] There seems to be a little concern now that registrations are open again, that for the bargain price of five dollars a spammer could get access to a large number of e-mail addresses. Could I suggest that e-mail addresses are hidden and a posting form put in it's place so we can remain easily contactable?

When adding contacts, if you select some option under Family (or any section really) you cannot then deselect all Family options.

When I look at my own profile, I see this about "contacts":

Contacts: This user doesn't link to any other MetaFilter members. No other MetaFilter members link to this user.

When I look at someone else's profile, I see a button to add that person as a contact.

Have I missed something in MeFi guidelines about contacts? Why would I want to add someone as a contact or have him add me? Is there some benefit to doing that (like an IM channel)?

Can someone explain 'contacts' for me?

I tried to add the ever-sparkling Sidhedevil as a crush with the "Add Contact" thingy, however after submitting the form no relationship type was mentioned in the list. All the other relationship types work, but crush just won't stick. I appreciate the way this plagiarises Real Life, but still think this constitutes a bug.

MeFi contacts stuff is back online and here's what it looks like in action. It is displaying the last 10 contributions in the last month from your contacts in all three sections of the site, as well as a list of their URLs if you want to read their blogs. I'll be adding recent comments from contacts as well, but I thought this was at the point where it was cool enough to share.

Thanks to the hard work of timeistight, we've now got some XFN features in place to do some of that social networking you've read so much about. As of right now, you can add folks as contacts, and describe the relationship optionally. Soon I'll have a page showing contributions to the site from your contacts, so if you have a favorite writer here, add them as a contact and hit that special page later when it's online. Imagine, ssoon you'll be able to say "show me all the questions asked by my friends to Ask MetaFilter" and get a page back showing just that, among other things.

I will definitely be working on the display of this info on user pages, as it currently looks like ass. Sky's the limit once we have this in place with some data. Oh, and I have no idea what a muse is either, anyone know?
